The Boeing B-52 Bomber is an American long-range, subsonic, jet-powered strategic bomber. The B-52 was designed and built by Boeing, which has continued to provide support and upgrades. It has been operated by the United States Air Force (USAF) since the 1950s. The bomber is capable of carrying up to 70,000 pounds (32,000 kg) of weapons, and has a typical combat range of more than 8,800 miles (14,080 km) without aerial refueling.

The summer before I graduated from college in 1962, IBM sent me to Wright Patterson AFB to teach a course in programming the IBM 705 computer for the Air Force Logistics command. They put me up at a little motel about 1 mile from the end of one of the runways. First the tankers would take off and an hour later the B-52s. In the mile from the end of the runway to my motel they gained very little altitude so they came over low but at full power. It is perhaps the loudest sound I have ever heard. Low these 58 years later they are still flying. The tankers KC-135s were modified Boeing 707s. While there are few 707s still flying, the last KC-135E was retired in 2009. The replacement tanker, the B-KC46 Pegasus is based upon the B-767 airframe.

I was a baby when the B-52 Bomber first went into service in the 1950s. This was the bomber that I was aware of when growing up as a child. It is amazing to see that the B-52 bomber has been in service for such a long time. This bomber was built at a time when the cost of building a bomber aircraft was a lot less than it is today. So hundreds of these bombers were originally built.

Also every weapon that is developed is usually first flown on a B-52 since it is very adaptable to internal or external carriage...

I’ve seen B-52’s fly over where I live. They have a distinctive vapor trail, almost like railroad tracks in the sky. The exhaust from all the engines on each side merge but stay separated from each other, so they wind up as two parallel lines in the sky. The first time I saw that vapor trail, I got my binoculars out and saw the exhaust from all eight engines. It was such a cool sight to behold.

We designed the new B-52G in 1956 as a high altitude bomber. In 1961 we redesigned the B-52G/H primart structure to meet SAC's new usage and service life requirments. These notably included low level terrain avoidance training, often under extreme gust and maneuver conditions. We did extensive flight testing, lab testing, data gathering. and fatigue analysis. The primary structure is never replaced. The main reason for the structural longevity is that the usage has not been as severe as was projected. As Chief of Structures Technology at Boeing-Wichita at the time of the redesign. I am honored to say I chose the materials, the analysis methods, and the limiting stress levels for the redesicn. I am now 95, and I am thrilled to see these planes still flying, and projected to do so for many more years.

A write up of B-52 losses in the Vietnam War: "On 22 November 1972, a B-52D (55-0110) from U-Tapao was hit by a surface-to-air missile (SAM) while on a raid over Vinh. The crew was forced to abandon the damaged aircraft over Thailand. This was the first B-52 to be destroyed by hostile fire in Vietnam. In total, 30 B-52s were lost during the war, which included 10 B-52s shot down over North Vietnam and five others being damaged and crashing in Laos or Thailand. The zenith of B-52 attacks in Vietnam was Operation Linebacker II (sometimes referred to as the Christmas Bombing) which consisted of waves of B-52s (mostly D models, but some Gs without jamming equipment and with a smaller bomb load). Over 12 days, B-52s flew 729 sorties and dropped 15,237 tons of bombs on Hanoi, Haiphong, and other targets. Originally 42 B-52s were committed to the war; however, numbers were frequently twice this figure. During Operation Linebacker II, there were 15 B-52s shot down, five B-52s were heavily damaged (1 crashed in Laos), and five B-52s suffered medium damage. A total of 25 crewmen were killed in these losses. Vietnam claimed 34 B-52s were shot down.

She's a good old plane. Years ago television and movies promoted the BUFF every time you turned around. A B-52 went down in Inver Grove Heights, MN in 1958. An uncommanded elevator trim excursion caused excessive stress to the airframe and the tail section broke off. The B-52 spun out of control and crashed. Seven of the eight on board died. There is a memorial plaque at the crash site. It's not far from where I live - I will visit that site soon.

I love the B52 but I just wanted to say "ok boomer" after this. The B52 is still around because of its ability to be upgraded to modern avionics and weapons systems and it having a very specific mission it is perfectly tailored for that has been further aided by modern weapon systems like cruise missiles. The rise of groups like ISIS also helped extend its life because they are limited to small arms for the most part that are no threat to a B52 at cruising height. Don't take this as a knock on the B52 - its a great plane and one of my favorites to see in the air. I just found the tone of the US some how doesn't know how to design planes these days as laughable.

Strange to think that if it was retired like most other aircraft it would be actually sitting in Museums throughout the country as a display piece. I think it's No.1 feature that makes it current is it's a large air frame able to deliver a large number of conventional bombs in one delivery as long as the airspace it flies in is controlled.

In 1967 I was stationed at Ellsworth AFB, SD., I remember watching from the Pride Hanger there (44MMS) a large number of B-52s take off down the flight line one after the other. It was really a sight, when Nixon put them on full alert. Once using the alternate gate to Ellsworth, it sounded like a boxcar coming down on my car from overhead, it was a B-52 coming in for a landing. Then at Minot AFB, ND. in 1971 I found myself again watching those monster B-52s take off down the flight line, and today in 2020 those B-52s remains a work horse ready to launch nuclear weapons to protect our freedoms. My job there the whole time enlisted was a USAF Minuteman Missile Technician helping to keep 150 nuclear missiles at each of these bases in ready status to defend our country. USA! USA! USA!

It usually doesn't last long after they do a roll in order to avoid a surface-to-air missile. We did leave several on the tarmac in Southeast Asia because of the frame damage done when they did such things. They were stripped out however. Lots and lots of extra parts. The next time I heard of such Maneuvers was when TWA Flight 800 went down, at least one other pilot stated that he did a role to avoid a surface-to-air missile. All common carrier aircraft since the 707 have been tested to that standard and can do those roles quite easily. No less than 150 three Witnesses saw flight 800 taken down by a surface-to-air missile. Including one man who is towing a target for the Navy to shoot at. Problem is, radar guided missiles of that size 10 to find the biggest target not always the one that's intended.

@@tarkusmjg The USAF flew 400 missions over Hanoi. The North managed to shoot down or damage beyond repair 30. That's ONLY 4%. The missile guidance was ineffective against the B-52's. They had to "salvo" (like a shotgun) missiles at the B-52's unguided and HOPE they could get a lucky hit. Great idea if you have an unlimited number of missiles. The North didn't. The last 2 days of the bombing campaign met almost zero resistance.

I know about the toughness of the B-52's since I began working on them during the Vietnam War and then there was three models flying and after the war the D models was retired and that left only the G and H models and the G models was retired probably due to the treaty with Russia leaving only the H models in service. Their primary mission was carrying nuclear weapons internally and externally with some being converted to carrying conventional weapons.

The B 52 was made by the same great people that made the B17 and B 29! They also made the 747, 727, 737, and on and on! There was something said about the 7 always in number but the B52 but if you add it up it makes 7 and the B29 that you need to subtract to get the 7. I don't think anyone would ever say that the B 52 didn't come out of a very long line of Great Airplane!

I was on a 2 lane state highway coming out of rapid city sd many years ago and the road cut across an s-shaped valley. It wasn't real deep, maybe a couple hundred feet. As i went down the western side i looked right and a -52 banked around the first curve, rolled right and vanished around the other curve. Had they been any lower i could have high fived the pilot. I had to settle for him waving to me. I was doing well over 100mph, but even that left me feeling like i was standing still. Overall it was pretty cool.

yep, we did that "Top-Gun-Maverick" stuff despite the "book" low hard-deck being 300' AGL - as a G-model copilot circa 1969, IIRC being at 30' AGL per the radar altimeter in a just-wide-enuf NV desert valley at 300 kts, essentially flying in "ground effect"; any abrupt bank would have a put a wingtip into the dirt (my AC was a hot-dogger wannabe fighter jock (but one-helluva pilot)) (eventually he broke too many rules too many times & was cashiered out) .....

@larry m yeah these guys were low enough and fast enough that the ground effect wake was like having a tornado level cross wind for a couple moments. When i was still a teenager and was considering the military to pay for college i was kind of considering the air force. I wanted to be the tail gunner on a BUFF. I knew it wasn't like the ww2 bombers where you were hands on guns, or even in a turret. But the idea of telling people what my job was and seeing the look of confusion was tempting to me. But, i knew that they'd either already been phased out or were about to be (this was in 1990) so it wasn't a really viable career path for me. Inevitably when talking to an army recruiter and he asked what i wanted to do i said "i want to blow shit up". When he said "yeah, we can do that" i signed immediately lol

ultra low-level piloting was an essential skill if one was ever going to penetrate & survive a nuclear run on russian or chinese territory; it could be "thrilling" or "fun" for we "no fear" younger pilots even tho we did not have zero-zero seats; the 2 guys downstairs would tell you they were generally terrified cuz they had no terrain concept except on radar & altimeter, & their seats ejected down; a gunner could see the terrain "afterward" but had no chance in any emergency cuz he had to jettison the gun section & just jump out; in that, one learns the true meaning of "aircrew" and the necessary essential confidence in one another's skills to survive .... comparatively, my "no fear" younger bro flew Army Kiowa gunships NOE (nap of the earth) thru mountainous euro valleys under low overcast in fog & rain ... could tell many thrilling stories .... until he died due to a low-level engine failure ...

This is insane. If the B-52 reaches its service life, it’ll have been in service nearly 100 years! Britain’s equivalent Cold War bombers (the Vulcan and Victor - marvellous machines), first built in the 50s, just like the B-52, were retired by the RAF in the early 80s and 90s respectively. I don’t know if this is correct, but I heard somewhere that B-52s dropped more ordnance in Vietnam in one day than every B-17 and B-24 in WW2.
