I hung out with international students who paid for everything. I never had to pay for anything even though I was a poor college student. One friend’s parents purchased a 4 bedroom house in San Francisco (look up prices yes many millions $) just for her to live in by herself while she was attending college. Another gave a friend who used him over $10k+ in supposed “loans” that were never going to be paid back even though we told him so he still kept “loaning” him money. We went wherever we wanted, did what we wanted & never considered the cost, except me feeling like I can’t pay even though they always told me not to worry. They often didn’t have to pay to go to clubs or vip sections bc they knew people so we’d get in all the vip sections & didn’t have to get bottle service or pay exorbitant costs for alcohol and always had a table available for us in vip lounges. When I went without them years later I realized that they don’t just let anyone in to sit anywhere😂. I was so used to them taking care of everything I was shocked at the reality when I went on my own haha. My friend has had his stuff stolen while just walking around thats when I realized he was always wearing expensive clothes & accessories. He talked about the brands & fashions he liked ig I just never paid attention until I made my own money & realized how much he must’ve spent on his clothes while I shopped at thrift stores back then😂. Just wanted to share my experience in case anyone wondered what it’s like to be friends with rich kids in college.

I know this video is about New york university, but I wanted to share my opinions on rich kids based off my experience in Columbia university(which is also in New York). An Indian girl here. I graduated in 2022 and throughout my 4 years of college being around both the lower class and rich kids, I'd say there are two types of rich kids - First rich kid, knows the value of every $, humble, so down to earth and open to being friends with people from all backgrounds and understanding where everyone is coming from, having ambition and mindset to create their own career rather than depending on their parents. The other rich kid, throws hella money into anything and everything without realizing their parents worked hard for the life they have, also limiting social circle and only being friends with same financial backgrounds because they just cannot adjust with the lower-middle class kids, literally book trips to the Bahamas during short breaks, and not giving a f*ck about their future because they think their parents will make a future for them. About both this two types of kids's social media presence, it doesn't really matter because some likes to keep low-key and private while others seem to be very active. There's nothing wrong with being either of them. I guess what I'm trying to convey is that wherever you go, you'll find these types of rich kids so its a normal thing now.

Columbia University alum and completely agree that Ivy league schools are so pretentious. They either make themselves exclusive to feeder schools and legacy students or imo worst, big name families. I personally received a call from the head of deans only 6 days after the application deadline and 6-8 weeks before other students heard back! He said he was personally inviting me to attend. Soon after it became clear they were mostly interested in my family whom I mentioned in the essay without much thought as a way to juxtaposition my humble aunt who dedicates herself to community service with her family background (to demonstrate why I was interested in the sustainability program). I went to a feeder high school, graduated with a high gpa, and almost got a perfect SAT score but for some reason, I don’t think thats why they called. It was a bit difficult going to go to school with so many stuck up rich kids who would actively argue with teachers anytime the topic of wealth gaps or social inequalities came up, some even calling teachers liars, or feeling entitled to better grades (some of the best professors left to other schools because of this). Imo you are lucky to be at NYU, in hindsight thats the better school.

5:17 I finished my graduate degree at NYU back in 2010. Tuition was very expensive, and the student loans are in IBR, but rent at a studio basement apartment in Brooklyn was only $800 back then, which is about $1160 today. 🤣 That being said, utilities, transportation, and food did drive the costs up another grand or two. It's easier to make money in NYC, though, as the city has a large population and many businesses.

These kids could 100% support themselves and be self-sufficient after graduating with a degree from NYU and with the connections they have. However, they do not want to be self-sufficient and drop to a lower social class as a result. This proves that no matter what, they can never be self-made like they say they want to. Doing so would result in having to temporarily - or permanently if they are not as special as they think they are - drop to a lower social class.
