Former SKS owner here.. (had to make rent one month.. many tears were choked back that day). I can attest.. if you arent using the standard mag for a SKS, you are asking for a lot more than jamming problems.. makes it easier for slam fire mishaps too..

Not really. The problem with them is unless your shave down the sides of the bolt to allow the mags to drop free with the bolt forward, you can't remove them without the bolt being locked back. It takes less than a half hour with a dremel to do it easy. Though even without that you can still dump 20-30 rounds from it without stoppages as well as charge it with 10 round stripper clips, or fresh mags when locked back. Though anyone who plans on using after market mags in their SKS should dremel off two ledges on the side of the bolt. makes it go from super awkward to handle to nearly modern. Plus it's likely he wouldn't need more than 10-30 rounds in this instance because rifles are easier to shoot, more deadly, and he was coming from ambush. 10-30 rounds of 7.62x39 beats 16 of 9mm and 8 .380 all day long.

After the 30rd mags were introduced it was 7x30 (210rds) though again downloaded by 1 or 2. When headed into combat extra ammo would be carried in cloth bandoleers slung over the body and/or extra loaded magazines in/attached to packs. I have seen reports of upwards of 900rds being carried. I brought too much ammo to this firefight....said no one EVER. I joined the Marines in 1977 and we always loaded to the full 30rd capacity and never had an issue during my 17 years of service. We also still did the bandoleer/extra mags thing. Though with the introduction of more vehicles to a grunt battalion (or doing mounted OPs) plenty of extra ammo was always packed into the jeep (later HMMWV) that accompanied us.

And if the suspect goes for another gun, the high capacity and penatration would really come in handy.. I'm indifferent on it, but with 4 extra rounds per mag, weight per round, etc you can carry a lot more ammo. Plus, what the 9 lacks in size it makes up for in speed. Bout 1300ft/sec compared to .45 acp's +/- 850. I like the idea of making big holes myself but the speed of the 9mm makes a pretty sizable wound cavity. Same as a little .220swift dropping a deer in it's tracks. The round is going 4000+ ft/sec

You think humans will die from one bullet because you see that in movies. In reality, unless the brain or spine is hit it is unlikely for a wound to down someone due to the high amount of adrenaline released by the body to try and survive.
