Our pond dam failed and it is time to fix it. Today we Haul up Dirt Perfects John Deere 120 excavator and his John Deere 850b bulldozer. We are lucky enough to be able to rent his equipment to take on this project. The first pond build failed because of two main reasons, poor compaction and not properly preparing for the back slope. In today's video we will pin point those exact causes and start the process of trying to fix them. Hope you enjoy the video!

Full credit for showing the failure of the original dam, you could have easily just left the original pond video up & not shown these vids & nobody would be any the wiser. So much more genuine when people admit they screwed something up & own it. It's also a massive benefit for people to see how a screw up is rectified & why it's not worth cutting corners in the first place & see what should have been done originally.

Hope you got the key and core done right, which I think you will with your experience and with DP and Jerry helping you. The key has got to be well below the bottom of the pond and on good solid material or the same type material being used to construct the key and core. These two things (key and core) are the most important part of a dam. Getting them compacted is the most important thing about putting them in. You can't overdo compacting the dirt for the key and core. The slopes of the dam are not as important to get packed as it's the slopes of the core that need to be completed compacted. Making sure you got the key down deep enough and core compacted then you'll have no problem with the slopes of the dam needing to be heavily compacted. You only need to compact the slopes enough to keep them from washing when it rains. This is slopes of the dam not the slopes of the core which are inside the dam. The key way and core can be made in a way that looks like a mushroom inside the dam if you took a cross section out of the dam. The key being the stem cut in well below the core that looks like the top of a mushroom and starts at or a little below the original ground level. The step method you're doing works fine as well but looks different than from a mushroom. If you filled the area behind your steps over to the key with the same material you're using for the steps and key, that would make the mushroom shape Im referring to. Either way works but it depends on what type materials you're working with. If you're doing it that way then it must work in your area unless that was your problem with the first dam. I'm not there so IDK. It's hard to judge from the other side of a computer screen and all I'm doing is sharing my experience and knowledge from my area of how I learned to build ponds and what has worked in my particular situations that might not work for you. It's very hard to fix the key and core in a situation like what you're in. It will work great that you're making the pond larger thus moving the dam out away from the original that failed allowing you to put in a new key and core. I'm not trying to lecture you on how to build a dam I'm only trying to help and I'm explaining things so in depth to help anyone that reads my comment who may not understand how a pond dam works. Hope it works out this time and I'm sure it will look great when you get it finished. Stay safe. -Wil 👍

No matter how big a pond, the surrounding area is a key to win or fail. That stairstep base is big enough for the largest dams in the area. Overkill would work for the word of the day and Mike (DP) seen that you needed help an more tools and made it happen. He is now down at the shop on a planned free minute because of a job long waited for needs Lt. Dan and it must be getting some finishing touches to make whole again. That truck is way big and almost Euclid in carrying capacity so fix quick and right while Aaron is home. Welding is its own game and more times than once a job fails because of a poorly done weld. dp Mike has a good head on his shoulders and realizes the power of a small but universal crew who can fill in any job capacity so that when the phone rings he can say with confidence, we are your team. I hope that none of you move on to new jobs or something forces it to happen as he is one of the highest watched companies out there. You are doing well fire fighter Mike. Maybe you don't think of it much but each of you are filling a "toolbox" of knowledge and could lose one job an just blink a eye and do another with out missing a friday paycheck. Great video work and not only that, we got you Mike, a great family man with good value system in tact

Great job, but may I make a suggestion: explain at the beginning of video of what your going to do for the day and then go do the work. It’s frustrating to watch your videos with all the interruptions of work. Also you recap way too much. The viewer understands if they just started watching your channel that they will have to go watch earlier videos. You are following the same format as Dirt Perfect. Let’s dig 18 has a great video format. We don’t have all the extra time to watch you haul equipment to the job site, just utterly a waste of time.
