Love these types of uploads Mike. You are always very upfront and honest about the good and bad side of owning ,running and operating your own Equipment. It’s easy to sit in a comments section on KZbin giving advice on what a man should or shouldn’t do with our undoubted wealth of experience and wisdom but I think you nail it every time. You never hide from things and especially when things don’t go to plan. So refreshing and never ever boring. I think you should do more of these voice overs (if you have the time) explain why you did what and what advantages doing what you’re doing has over a different method as in this video. This channel is among the very best out there in terms of explaining the thought process behind the decisions you make in my opinion. On a side note Aaron is magnificent 😉 😂👍🏼

Dont forget number two boss as well, Jerry brings his massive wealth of experience to the game everytime he sets foot on site and instinctively knows what he about - without the need to be told - never mind repeatedly...and like myself has reached that age where he NEVER suffers fools gladly. Between the three of you , you make even a big job look both easy AND entertaining, I'm sure most of your followers (me included) all feel part of the team. keep up the good work guys.

Let's face it, on these sorts of projects in your sort of terrain three's company, four's a crowd and your choice of equipment spot on. You've got two damn fine operators and another learning real fast. Hat's off to you Mike for the effort you put into filming and explaining the process. Top notch KZbin, IMHO.
@Manoffire260

So many KZbin “experts” see everything from an employee’s perspective of making everything easier on them. What they fail to understand is all the factors that go into the business decisions that you have to make to get there profitably. They never consider insurance, transportation costs, cost of employees, ROI on a specific piece of equipment and (one they might understand) fuel costs. You were so eloquent in your response to the “experts” and were gracious enough to provide your thought process. You do “have a plan”! 😊

I think you're doing just fine with the equipment you own. People mean well for the most part. As you say there are a lot of things to factor in, that a lot of people don't think about. You are doing the work and knows best if there is a need for new equipment. The bottom line is you get the job done in a timely manner. It always comes out looking great. And you and your customers are happy. Your doing a great job. Thanks for letting us watch.

Always enjoy starting my retired days with some fresh perc'd coffee and a nice, long DP video! It's amazing the transformation you have done with this property and how fortunate for the landowner to have all the dirt available on site to make it happen! I used to run all the big Cats back in the day (86-98) and thankfully, the company I worked for would always be rotating in new machines with tunes and *AC* ! Many operators for the other companies around would always call us spoiled...I would say we weren't spoiled - we were just the best!!! lol Keep up the great work, Mike!

Having a dozer big enough to serve as a push tractor is also less economical and diverse as the size equipment that you currently have or the other option is an elevating or self loading scraper but the maintenance and upkeep is unbelievably expensive on them. Your equipment selection and size range is pretty spot on for pretty much any need. Nicely done sir

Mike back in the 70s I ran a scraper for a Peabody coal company. They were fuel hog and constantly blowing hoses and ripping up. Tires is not the type of equipment a small outfit needs the truck and back hole is the right thing. You’re doing a good job. Keep it up big ED coming to you from western Kentucky in Central City you Jerry and Aaron are doing a great job. Have a good and wonderful safe day.

It's shaping up nicely Mike, what a few days with no rain is amazing. What I know about scrapers is not much but they need a lot of maneuvering room and which fits your train of logic about a second dump truck, it would start a traffic jam, like most of your jobs you have so small a working area. Keep up the good work guys, you are killing it, Have a good day!

I've thought, and mentioned before, how valuable I believe Jerry to be to your program of operation. In my opinion (self provided without inquiry. 😇) He just gets the job done. No excuses / no grumbling. M.B.T.Scenes has developed into a fine asset to you as well (in terms of driving the equipment), because he appears to be a pretty good welder, etc. (I really don't have a clue what title to call the work he does for you). However, the true aspect of his driving improvement, is really a huge thanks to you Mike. From my point of view, you have done a great job in guiding him along on his path of truck driving improvement. I get a since of self-confidence emanating from him, as he continues to improve on those driving tasks, in addition to the various equipment that require a driver. Much continued success - Oh! Kudos on always providing honest points of view or, perspective on your videos. Self-critiques and Self-reflection are a very healthy way to keep your life (business wise in this point) growing as well as in a positive track. Peace be with you all. ✌✌✌

I've only been watching these videos for a week or so and the reason I hit the subscribe button was because from the begining I could see how much common sense this man has. I've only used small equipment turning a huge compost pile and have retired from being an OTR trucker but this is fascinating to me! I believe, from what I've observed, he knows what he's doing running his business. It doesn't seem like his equipment is sitting still at all. Which equals a successful business. Love the efficiency Mike. It takes a lot of planning to make a company profitable, especially in today's circumstances. You have one of the more effective plans I've seen in a while. Knowing the types of work available in your area is so important and being able to do larger and smaller jobs with the same equipment matters so much. I know a lot of people have opinions, but they are not doing the operational plans or paying the costs. It's great to have suggestions, but understanding the full scope of the work is usually a much bigger reality.😉 Pond looks fantastic and I'm sure the finished project is even better.🤙

I like your commentary on equipment and the fleet. Your business model is great. Pretty self sufficient, you can move your own equipment and keep your payroll to a minimum. When you get into a bigger machine you have to depend on a heavy haul to be available. Hire pilot cars. Bigger machine= bigger insurance, bigger fuel storage, bigger repair bills. Bigger machine isn't going to fit in your shop, more overhead at the dealer. It all adds up. Now you have to keep that machine busy. Someone asked about the D4, it's paid for if it sits no worries. Yet it might be worth it's weight in gold on that one job a year. That big excavator is a fuel drinking liability. If there is a big enough job to justify a bigger machine, shouldn't take long to find a rental. Just my two cents. Hope others can see the bigger picture.

An outstanding summary of fuel cost with the various pieces of equipment which truly qualifies the difference between needs and wants. I used to think a scraper would be better but that is predicated on all the different variables for each specific job site and the cost analysis for fuel is spot-on Mike! You guys are doing an outstanding job and the magnitude of the size has truly grown to make a really nice pond! I like how you guys manage the grade to make it serviceable in the future for mowing! Very good Video! You are so right, people dont realize earthmoving is not like playing in the sand on the beach. The limiting factor is the time you need to shape and compact the material on sites like that. Compaction is much more important than many people realize. Its good for nothing if you use a 40ton Excavator and two trucks if you cannot compete with compacting, and shaping.. being far behind shaping will make you move more material twice.. In my area this job would also be done differently we would use a second excavator with a tilting bucket and plate compactor istead of a dozer and roller, and a big farm tractor with a dump trailer instead of an offroad truck. But we would not be faster, just use different equipment.

I have noticed a number of large site contractors using a very large tractor with a tow behind pan for moving large amounts of dirt. I guess it really all becomes a question of cycle time and just how much dirt you are capable of moving per hour with the equipment. Just because the pan grader is using 14 gallons an hour, if it is moving twice the amount of dirt than your other equipment, it becomes a bit of a wash on the larger fuel usage- if you move more dirt using less fuel. I have noted that the large pan graders are used where the distance between cut and fill is greater and turns a two man operation into one, but Jpaydirt has done a few where the excavator could almost swing the dirt over from the cut to the fill, so I dunno.... Each piece does have its time and its place, it sucks to invest in a million dollar piece of equipment when it will sit for more months of the year than be used when you can get by with what you have. That is one tall dam on the backside. Are you making it an agreeable slope for mowing with a tractor or lawn mower?

It really is about utilization. Equipment that is not moving and in contact with dirt is not making money. If you have to spend more time moving to and from jobs, and have to acquire, own, and maintain more equipment just to have it sit until the 'Dirt Perfect' job comes along where it will be useful, that doesn't make economic sense! Nicely explained DP!

1) Me too: great job! Explanation much appreciated! 2) In my perception (based on your videos), this would have been yet another job where you could have benefitted from a number of conveyor belts. This time not for working in tight spaces (like at the house on the river), but to span the short distances with steep grades. With a rotatable slide at the far end, it would have enabled MBTS to work on the back side of that strech, adjusting that slide every "few" minutes, while Jerry would continue on the inside of the pond. - Think of it: a series of belts could also bridge muddy spots. It would make the job-site logistics less rain-dependent. (Absence-of-rain, that is.)
