Thank you Dr. Judo for your consistent, habit- (and life-) changing content! 0:24 - why is Gambling popular? 1:00 - addiction vs very strong habit 1:22 - overconfidence, 2:21 - Gambler's fallacy 2:35 - Sports bettering, accumulator 4:35 - near miss hypothesis 5:27 - How to be responsible, callback to 1:00 6:05 - when we have a strong habit we are insensitive to messaging 6:30 - add friction, or disrupt context 7:28 - change environment / context in a more significant way

Good channel I will keep watching this and learning, but I have a bunch of criticism against some statements. What underlies gambling is the very same mechanism that underlies videogame addictions or cocaine consumption: dopamine reward system, thus in the end they are not different. Physical abstinence and tolerance to substances account for dependence not for the addiction itself. This is a different topic: from other video I found that you do not recommend Kahneman’s book arguing replication problems. Man, replication problems are as widespread in neurosciences as COVID around the world, as for me, his research work and discoveries are quite worthy and hisNobel prize is well deserved.

Hi Pete! I love all the content you make - the conciseness is great. I actually learned about asymmetric paternalism and libertarian paternalism last week in my university and notice how the advice you gave to break the habit follows that of AP (namely cool-down periods). Was cool to make the connection is all I really wanted to say - looking forward to more content from you in the future!

I didn't quite get the reasoning behind your thoughts that gambling is just a habit, not an addiction? Could you please clarify? Thanks

Hi Angelina. Sorry for not being clear. The point is that addictions, from a neurological POV are directly stimulated by external chemicals that make their way into the blood stream and the brain. Think, heroin, cocaine or nicotine. These chemicals directly stimulate dopamine production. However, with habits, there is nothing external being added to the blood stream. Like gambling for instance. So while it’s still dopamine at work, this dopamine is produced by the brains natural habit forming processes. Not artificially stimulated. As a result, we don’t have to resort to such drastic strategies as you would with drug addiction. Like offering different drugs to counter the drugs you’re addicted to. Instead, we can just use strategies that re-engineer someone’s environment in a way that breaks the automatic response to people wanting to gamble.
