Toyota Corolla's are great little fuel efficient / cost efficient cars. The CV axle and seal on the drivers side (especially w. a manual transmission) can be a struggle. That is unless you have the right tools and tricks to do it. Follow D6Spanky and I as we show you how to change it the easy way.
Indexing prybar → amzn.to/35uCdB6 (the good stuff buy it right the first time)
Small impact driver → amzn.to/3kujr1l (the good stuff XR kit)
125pt. Large metric socket index → amzn.to/3eZ3iQ0 (size 19mm-50mm! WAY more handy than you'd ever guess for bearings and pressing etc. find at HFT cheaper too)

If you don't have a big socket, you can use the old seal on top of the new one to tap in. I messed this job up, by driving the new seal in a little too far. When I started to pull out of garage all the tranny fluid was on the floor. Redo was much quicker.

That manual trans calls for GL-4. The GL-5 shown in the video isn't so friendly to the synchros. I bought mine new in 03 and did the driver's side at 225K and the other side at 250K. I've been using Redline MT90 as it's GL-4 and the car shifts better with that than any other I've tried. I used Mobil 1 early on until I figured out that GL-5 isn't backward compatible with a MT that required GL4.
@michaelmaloney6112
@michaelmaloney6112 Жыл бұрын
Previous models called for GL4 or Gl5, Toyota said 2009-2013 i believe just GL4 in the service manual after. GLF5-4 liquid actually out performs GL4 protecting the brass synchros. Mobil 1 75w90 Gl5 doesn’t even contain anything harmful for yellow metals apparently so you could have kept with that. Other Gl5s can be harmful.
@randyduncan795
@randyduncan795 Жыл бұрын
@@michaelmaloney6112 A master Toyota tech disagrees in regards to GL5. My experience is that the MT90 shifts better. This tranny now has 257K miles on it with no loss in performance.
@liveoak7838
@liveoak7838 6 ай бұрын
MT90 is too thick for these transmissions. don't shift too quick or the combo of rev hang and quick shifting will wear the syncros. the proper Redline fluid would be MT-LV or D6 ATF both of which match the factory fluid specs more closely. These transmissions are designed for low viscosity fluid.
@randyduncan795
@randyduncan795 6 ай бұрын
@@liveoak7838 Ok, if Toyota felt that ATF was the best fluid for these manuals then why did they fill them with and call for GL4 75W-90? Are there no engineers at Toyota who know the proper spec for these transmissions?
@liveoak7838
@liveoak7838 6 ай бұрын
@@randyduncan795 Toyota LV is straight 75W, not 75-90. Redline MT-LV is designed to be used in this C59 transmission. It is GL4 rated. Before Redline came out with MT-LV, Redline D6 ATF was the closest formulation they had to Toyota LV. It is also GL4 compliant and approved to be used in a manual. MT-90 is best suited for Toyota trucks. The C59 needs a thinner fluid for its syncromesh actuation. Toyota engineers recommend factory fluid only.

Putting grease on the transmission end of the CV axle doesn't risk contaminating transmission? That grease will never be found mixed in with the transmission fluid? Is this obvious knowledge to mechanics?

Great question David. I'm pushing an air nozzle into a hole in a handle of a 1gal gear oil jug that has a half inch hole center of the cap and a half inch tubing in the bottom of it running up through the cap. The top air in the jug pushes the gear oil level down and out through the tube into the transmission.
