Today Ben dives into the Wizarding World of Harry Potter to reveal why Petunia, or any muggle for that matter, NEVER goes about revealing the Wizarding World and all of the odd rules that surround this issue. Like if its legal to marry muggles.. But illegal to reveal the Wizarding World… how does that work?

I have a question and it’s more of a what if I suppose. Do you think there were wizards that had jobs at security cards at king cross station? We know there is jobs where wizards have to blend in with muggles and kings cross station every year is so busy with muggles when the school year is starting and ending.i find it impossible that no muggles see wizard families going in or coming out of a brick wall is not noticed and reported on and so wizard guards acting as muggles would make way more sense so they can erase the muggles memories.

I think she had a constant internal battle between hating and loving the wizarding world. Hating it for not allowing her in. On the other hand, I think she likes knowing something other people don’t know, she also loved her sister, and she still gets to be a part of the world, if she keeps the secret.

The Hitchhikers Guide to the Galaxy series has something called an SEP field which enhances the natural inclination to ignore what we don't want to know about. It's easier and cheaper than making something invisible. SEP stands for Somebody Else's Problem. Doctor Who calls it a perception filter

I definitely agree about Petunia. They're so focused on being normal. Trying to out the wizarding world wouldn't be getting back at the Wizards. It would only serve to make Petunia look like a conspiracy theorist. Then she'd be outcast from both the wizarding AND muggle worlds.

I think it's only difficult to reveal BECAUSE it is kept so secret. Like if wizards everywhere stopped trying to keep it a secret, there would be enough evidence that people would believe it, but since they mitigate that evidence so heavily, on the rare occasion that some experience gets out, it is met with skepticism because evidence is so rare

My belief is that James is the one who cast the spell. So the only ones who would know would be James, Lily, Peter, and Sirius. Would it even be possible for the Gaunts to accept him as their family?! Considering how pure blood crazy they were, I don't think they would have been too keen into welcoming a half-blood into their home. Let alone raise Tom Riddle as their grandchild & teach him about the magical world. Tho if they did, I wonder Whether Tom would had been even more crazy about pure blood in wizards, or much "softer" about it. And how much he would had felt bullied/ wronged for being half blood, and a descendant of Salazar Slytherin all in the same time.

Doyleist answer: Unfortunately, I think it’s all just symptomatic of world-building that wasn’t very well thought out. Watsonian answer: I think the Fidelius Charm could prevent someone that’s suspicious of magic from being able to expose it but it wouldn’t stop those who have been told the secret, thereby becoming secret keepers themselves, from exposing it. But since muggles seeing the flying car was such a major threat to the secret then it can’t be being kept via Fidelius Charm.

This makes me think of the Love Death & Robots episode "The Drowned Giant". The basic synopsis is that everyone sees this massive giant man dead on the beach. Everyone is fascinated by it, and wants to check it out. And then slowly over the course of a few weeks people lose interest in it as parts of him go missing and he becomes more deformed. People stop caring and move on with their lives. Soon the main character is driving through town and can see bits and pieces of the giant throughout the city and countryside, but people eventually re-brand the giant as just some sort of sea beast. As if they had completely forgotten what they had seen and experienced. Instead of a giant man, they kind of just remember it as a thing from the ocean, a whale perhaps. Instead of remembering this awesome being that they saw, they simply tell themselves that it's illogical and fill in the gaps with something that's more logical to them, despite having experienced it for themselves. Basically, magic is too farfetched to be real, therefore it isn't. And even if they experience it themselves, they'll eventually convince themselves that it wasn't magic and that it had to be something else. Something more logical.

Re the idea of the Fidelius charm on the sorting hat - I love this idea, but doesn't Harry tell Albus about the hat, and tells him he can ask what house to be put in?
@PizzaMineKing
@PizzaMineKing 4 сағат бұрын
Pretty sure there was a previous episode concerning that: Essentially, during the battle of hogwarts, the sorting hat got damaged enough to count as dead for the purposes of the charm, making basically everyone secret keeper.
@Martyn_Wolf
@Martyn_Wolf 3 сағат бұрын
15:35 Issue is as Arthur mentioned after the death of Albus "now that there are around 20 secret keepers it greatly decreases the strength of the charm" when he was talking about the Fidaleus Charm to Harry. If all the wizards/witches are secret keepers. Then the charm itself is excruciatingly weak and highly easy to break. I don't agree with it being a Fidaleus Charm. Given that Petunia told Vernon, means that there's no charm stopping anyone from sharing the information. It's not shared because of trust... And they can obliviate or modify the memory if needed.

Regarding what kind of evidence I'd need to believe in magic: I'm pretty sure David Blaine is a wizard. I assume the Wizarding world allows him to entertain for a living: prob to desensitize us to real magic. Since we've already seen it in his shows, under the guise of tricks and illusions, sleight of hand, blah blah blah, we'd assume that's all it was. Yes, I'm on to you. Bet there's some witches and wizards in the comments section right now. 👀

I think there is actually a condition-based protection spell. It's like the Taboo. When someone says Voldemort's name, it unlocks an alarm. The secrecy spell is more complicated, but it has the same basics. When you choose a Muggle spouse, you unknowingly put a spell on them. This spell is, I think, based on Legilimency, and it has a simple trigger mechanism. It's activated as an alarm spell when your Muggle spouse learns about the existence of the Wizarding World. When the Muggle spouse thinks of the Wizarding World, it's triggered. I think there are two ways for this. Either they forget about magic when nobody is around them who is linked to it (like your spouse forgets about it when you're not with them), and the Obliviate spell is reversed when they get back to Wizarding company. Or, the thought of telling others about having a relationship with a magical person (which always precedes actually talking about it, even if only a tenth of a second) triggers a spell like the Muggle-repellant spells, also based on Obliviate, but when they forget about the Wizarding World, they forget about talking about it, thus re-locking the memory spell. A circular thing that is still foolproof, as the thought (or lack of it) is bewitched before they could talk.

I think it's just that as muggles we are so reluctant to accept magic unless we see a big display of it first hand. Which is why oblibiators are so important in those cases. Even Vernon who knows about magic didn't understand what was happening with the wizard he crossed on the street celebrating Voldemort's downfall and assumed that was just a crazy man. Also Harry's accidental magic as a kid was showing up in school and I don't think there were any oblibiators there.

I just have to point out that if my keys were to shrink down so tiny I can't find them, I'd have to assume the best logical answer. I'd need to see them shrink before I'd even consider the possibility. As for shrinking keys to bait muggles, I'd think that most people would just find it mildly annoying never once thinking about magic.

Any of these methods should work: * Let muggles come into Hogwarts castle, or into Diagon Alley, or any other magical place. * Show them a magical creature, such as a niffler, or a bowtruckle, a centaur, a troll, a giant, even a dragon with sufficient safety precautions. * Cast a spell or two in front of them - ones that can't be simulated by stage magic. Levicorpus or Wingardium Leviosa should do it. * Can muggles be affected by potions? * Let them try some magical candies or other food & drink (ton-tongue toffee not recommended).

To answer the question: It is the combination of the efforts of wizards to conceal magic and muggles to brush it off or, if learning or discovering the truth, fearing that no one would believe them without concrete proof, that makes magic possible to keep secret on a world wide scale. The thing that honestly boggles me though, is if the wizarding world is comprised of lots of muggle-borns and half-bloods, why are they so far behind in technology? Now for a different what if series: What if Harry, the chosen one, turned out to be a squib? Like, he's still attacked by Voldemort and the love charm still takes effect, but what if he had no magic himself?

The accent that Hagrid uses is the same accent that they based the Pirate Accent on in Treasure Island... That's why they 'sound similar'. Also: I'd need to see the spell, in person, in a non-prepared space as far as the 'caster' is concerned... that's probably why performing spells in front of muggles is the 'no-no', seeing is believing as they say.

I would think that Dumbledore told her about the SOS, and her fear of him caused her to hold her tongue. They have corresponded at least twice after all.

Look at Disney's Frozen 2 and you'll see why it's better not to reveal magic. It's a divisive subject where some will be in awe of it while others will fear it and hate it. As for Petunia, I believe there's a division between her and Lily, but I don't believe she hated her sister as much as she thought she did. I think she was projecting it, but she hated her parents for playing favoritism and not loving her enough.

Heck, If I went down the bayou and saw a commune of Rougarous, Le Feu Follet, and the swamp dwarves with their pet guard dog called the Grunch, I would be able to take anyone. Cause the scene will be undescribable and very hard to explain. Yes these creatures are real urban legends in Louisiana.

If I married someone and they told me they were a wizard OR I had a magical kid I’d think it was AWSOME. But I’d want magic performed on me to prove it was real.

What about the possibility of the Ministry making a deal with muggles who are related to wizards with some sort of “gift” (*cought* bribe) to keep them silent. How did Mr. Dursley meet the man who needed to order a bunch of drills? Why was business so good? A little push by a wizard in the right direction.

I’m gonna guess fear and shame. She cares about how she’s perceived and her going round saying that witches and magic are real with no real proof is going to make her look insane. As for fear, she’s seen half the stuff Harry’s pulled when he’s mad and someone pointed out that she did lose her sister to magic too.

Let's remember, the Ministry of Magic has the ability to alter memories and time travel. Also, for Petunia, saying her sister was murdered because she was a witch and now she had to take core of her magical son. Sounds like a looney to me.

What if Aunt Petunia was a normal Aunt, that treated Harry like a surrogate son, and she took Harry as a little kid to Spinner’s End and introduced him to Snape. How would that change the story?

Stan Shunpike was right. We Muggles will explain away anything we see with our own eyes using logic as we know it, despite the evidence clearly presented. What was the explanation given for the collapse of the already-vacant WTC 7 building? "Jet fuel drained down the towers' staircases and elevator shafts and pooled under the WTC 7 building, where it was set alight by the boilers in the basement, burning out the WTC 7 foundation." **Seriously?** This was the only explanation ever offered. Funny that not all the jet fuel burned in the towers, huh?

My thing is, some ordinary people have to know wizards exist, because like petunia you might have a sibling who is a witch or wizard, or a child, or a parent, etc.. For them to come at Harry about his cousin seeing magic I think was a huge plot hole 🤔 correct me if I’m wrong tho

Why did Harry get in trouble in Order of the Phoenix if only his cousin, who knows about magic, is the only one who saw the charm? Or is it simply that the Ministry was after him by that point?
