I have run into people online that see absolutely zero value in physical media. They imo are either trolling or legitimately havent thought about it before. As this video aptly points out, we have the ability to choose how we consume this industry. Like you I greatly enjoy JRPGs. I look at them as something special in most cases to have and a digital only copy of these games is just not the same. Tangibility, tradeability, the ability to sell them, display them, look at them and the fact that it is one of the things I love most about gaming, having something to show for my purchase. A physical option is always worth money after purchase. There are no situations that I know of in which a digital game purchase has anything but "entertainment value" attached to it. While the game itself is technically the most important part of the experience, trading money for digital air is not my idea of using my money wisely as this industry is predicated on exchanging money for games. Account hacks, bans, digital delistings....I dont want a games industry future without a physical contingent to back it up for consoles. Im not "against" digital either but we still need physical games as an option. Great video man, lots to say on this topic.

Much appreciate it and thanks so much for the well worded response to this important topic. It just shows how important physical media is especially in this modern work of all things digital.

Great stuff, Forest. Love the collection. Good examples. I’ll always prefer physical over digital as long as I’m alive and playing games. Rarely ever buy digital unless it’s extremely cheap or, in some cases like the PS One Classics on Vita, a much more affordable option than facing scalpers in the retro market. Games preservation and ownership are massively important, but my #1 reason is because having a tangible game in my library that I can hold, look at, and play helps me connect so much more to the medium than simply seeing the cover art of a game on a screen.

I wish there were more people that were as passionate about this topic and speaking out more about it. Most seem to not see how important it is, but they need to be shown.

Thanks for the comment. I know I could have condensed and worded what I said a lot better but ill try and work on this more as time goes on.

I think you did a pretty good job getting the points across. Sometimes as people we just struggle to find the right words.

I only buy physical games, so I'm really worried by this digital-only trend. Companies love digital-only because they can control the prices.

I will always buy a physical copy of a game over digital and I'm not a collector. There's nothing better than getting a new game and checking out the case/art/manual as you've mentioned. The idea of digital only just sounds terrible to me, then to deal with delisting of games, or if somehow you lost your account ...you've lost everything. I do buy digital games from time to time too, but I'll buy physical over digital normally

Unless there is a game that’s digital only with a price cut or a physical game that cost me an arm and leg

Im both a digital and physical collector, retro games physical and most modern stuff digital on PC. Having the choice to buy a game physically or digitally like you said is very important. It is a shame that companies are favoring one method over the other as in the end it will only hurt the consumers.

Totally agree. Choice in how we buy our games with our hard earned money matters most.

i saw this coming from a mile away. xbox games havent been on the disc for years now. and even on ps5, most games pre day 1 patch are unplayable.

Might as well just migrate to PC if this is what to become of gaming, I mean if it all goes digital, it means the console companies will monopolize the digital marketplace and that is scary. As a PC gamer I tend not to collect modern physical games since it's all digital but I do support physical and wish PC games still came out in physical formats. Without Physical Media, we can't preserve the original versions of games and I think that's the most important thing to consider. The original Final Fantasy X for example has better visuals than the remaster, it must be preserved for that reason.

It really is unfortunate the move to full digital, I suppose I will start having to import more and more physical copies from Asia and Japan. Do I think there will come a day where games are digital only? Probably, but I hope that day is 5 or 6 decades down the road at least.

Seems like Avatar: Frontiers of Pandora (published by Ubisoft) will be a digital only release too, it's not confirmed yet. The concerning part is the publisher Epic Games is one of the richest companies in the industry (valued at $30 billion or something) they could easily release a physical version of Alan Wake 2, but chose not to.

If the new avatar game is indeed digital only then that does suck. :(

I dont own my digital games and ownership is important to me. The delistinng of Jump force & its characters and P.T. , it really made me think about a lot of things. Having a choice means alot to me, and i choose physical. I get so much more out of it.

still hoping for a PS4 reprint of Pixel Remaster. Mostly physical. The digital games I have, I got them at a massive discount (relative to physical print)

That was one game I was going to show in this video but I do own the physical PS4 version of the Pixel remaster. I have not opened it yet but now Im wondering if I even should at this point seeing as how hard it is to get and just buy a switch copy from play asia.

Even physical games aren’t safe either for most require update patches and dlc to have the full experience, bothe disc and cartridge. Emulation/piracy is the best and only way to preserve your games.

i play a mix of each. i still will buy some older games but im slowly falling out of love with the hobby in general. i will love the ones i grew up with and still play new ones sometimes, but games really just arent as good as they used to be. anyway, glad to see you back man.

I know that both digital and physical have their ups and downs, but i will always take physical over digital, and i really hope this trend of pure digital games never comes also funny thing, but the exact thing happened to me at a Wal-Mart with Xenoblade Chronicles DE!,i was looking for a copy of the game with a friend of mine,we found 2 at a wal-mart,we asked the guy how much was it and the guy just tells is "it's 10 bucks" me and my friend couldn't believe the guy,we both just let a "wait what?" at the same time when we hear the price XP

Very awesome you got a copy of the game for 10 bucks let alone 2 copies. That is one huge upside to physical media. Finding amazing prices like that for new games. Considering that first party Nintendo games never drop in price shows that sometimes good things happen to those who shop around for the best deals. 😄

Legend of dragoon is such a underrated game. I must confess that I do find the game quite challenging to master and while I got stuck near the end of disc 2, still found it to be a fun experience due to it's story and characters. The button prompts get faster as the game progresses which makes it hard for me to do decent damage was where I got stuck in the game.

@@forest_gamingredux8156 it was hella difficult i’m ngl but i loved it because it made it feel more involved than other turn based jrpgs at the time like final fantasy and dragon quest and ofc i’m not sayin legends of dragoon was better than either but it just made the combat feel more fun, kinda the same way that chrono cross’ combat was still turn based but it had a little extra to it to make it feel less tanky

Physical Only 🎮 "I don't support digital gaming it's a waste of money"
@Sinistraa

Great video and thanks for putting this info out there. A lot of gamers don't give digital vs. physical a second thought but it really is important that we have rights and options when it comes to playing and owning media. There really is little to no regulation (in the US at least) out there to protect consumers from losing access to digital stuff they've purchased.
