When you say referee, the first association for most people will be a bald-headed tall man with a strong look in his eyes from Italy.
And his name is Pierluigi Collina.
But, how did he reach such a legendary status that no referee until or since him even touched?
Well, it’s a long story.

during the 90s, Collina was called to referee a very difficult match in Serie B (Italy's 2nd Division), between Foggia and Bari, which fans are enemies. At the beginning of the second half, after the two teams exchanged their sides as it is normally done in football, however, the Foggia's fans (whose stand was therefore just behind Bari's goalkeeper) started to launch objects directed to the goalkeeper of Bari, making impossible for the match to continue. Thus, Collina decided to invert again the team's sides on the pitch, returning to the ones of the first half, making the match continue. Collina was so charismatic that he himself could decide the rules

That's actually very smart. No ref would have the balls to do that now
bla bla
bla bla 2 жыл бұрын
@T8 Spy many of them would (I could bet money on Bjorn Kuipers), but probably the rules have become more strict nowadays, and referees don't get a lot of lenience in their officiating anymore. Although, had Collina still refereed today I think he would get lenience of his own and neither UEFA, FIFA, or the Italian Football Federation could do anything about it. And I'd love it :)
Chiemeka Nwaogwugwu

@bla bla I couldn't agree more! I also heard a story (though I don't believe it's true) that Collina actually booked one of his assistant refs in a game for failing to correctly call an offside because it was clear to everyone else except the assistant in question. I haven't been able to verify that story, but if it did happen, I wouldn't be surprised because that's just Collina - the rules actually follow him, not the other way around.

Christian Andersen except for the fact that this never happened. Collina was in a scandal for not stopping a game in really impossible weather conditions. Juventus for that lost a title (this before calciopoli scandal) and blamed Collina joking on the reasons he pulled out to justify his decision for letting play such a match. Americans always like to bend the reality to make their story much fascinating for the audience... Americanos by Holly Johnson best song on USA ever

Collina used the "advantage rule" beautifully and that encouraged free flowing football. He did make mistakes, not all his decisions were perfect but the quality of his refereeing was, overall, sublime. The entertainment value of a match was increased by some 10-20% every time he was in charge.

My dad bought that game for me, on the case of Pro Evolution Soccer 3 his image was used on the cover. I thought reference would be made to Atlanta 96 Football finals between Nigeria and Argentina, which Nigeria won. The winning goal was a classic but somehow controversial goal. Colina's ingenuity to ratify the goal, though unprecedented, improved his resume greatly. He's adjudged the fairest referee on the field of play to date.

I just watched clips of that game and he gave a really easy penalty when Ortega fell for nothing and then again a booking when a sliding tackle hit the ball instead of Ortega who fell. I'm glad there's VAR now for the penalties, although that's not yet working perfectly either. And by the way, it's the assistant referee who flags the offsides, the referee is unable to know if something is an offside or not themselves. In that case, it must have been difficult for the assistant as well, as there were many players standing between him and the players that mattered.

I think we can't judge Collina's ability to referee and say if he was or not the GOAT. The only thing I can say is that he's been a brilliant communicator in terms of marketing, he knew he had an easily identifiable face and even used it to sell his presence on a video game cover. It was a time when players were at their peak in terms of marketing, I think, with all the all stars Nike and Adidas ads, the rise of PES and FIFA as products bought worldwide. And in a way, the FIFA and the Board also needed a recognizable character as a referee and Collina fell right in time. He was everywhere so it makes it hard to have an objective view on his refereeing level. He was certainly the most charismatic ever but it doesn't mean there haven't been some others great referees who were more discreet.

I think the moral of this story is that it doesn't matter what you do for a living, instead it matters how well you do it. It doesn't matter whether you're a chef, an actor, a builder or a lawyer, if you do it well enough, you will be respected and widely-known.

Well said, he is in a profession where it is common place for all obscenities and disrespect to be dished out from players and fans with ref intimidation at the forefront. He puts on a great war face and calls it with self assurance. The fact so many respect him for his skill and command over the players speaks greater than a Shakespear monalogue of the man.

He made terrible, terrible mistakes that cost the Czechs games against the Netherlands at Euro 2000, and then again in 2004, where he did not give a clear penalty for the Czechs against the Greeks in the semi-final (while giving the Dutch a nonsensical penalty in the 89th minute which gave them a 1-0 victory). So he is very disliked in the country. He certainly made mistakes.

And then a huge Scandal at the beginning of the season happened because he appeared in a commercial for one of AC Milan's sponsors so he retired anyway. On the other hand, at least he retired just before Calciopoli.

He is a legend in Turkey not because Turkish clubs or national team did not loose while he is in charge. Because most of our clubs and our national team suffered so much in European Tournaments in the hands of refs so Turkish people started thinking that Europeans hating Turks so their refs are biased against Turkish teams. But here comes Collina. With Collina we know that we will be on equal grounds with our opponents. This gave Turkish teams additional motivation. When it is announced Collina will be ref in our matches Turkish people went crazy with joy. He is embodiment of justice for us.

Man on phone I think i did not express myself clearly. Sorry for my English. The issue in almost every competition for Turkish teams regardless of the opponent refs was favoring the opponents of Turkish teams. Turkish people thinks that all Refs having European nationals was biased to Turkish teams. But this idea changed with Collina. Collina being Italian citizen was not favoring opponents of Turkish teams nor the Turkish teams. So Turkish fans started thinking that only ref that fair and just in all of europe was Collina. Collina is the mind-changer for Turkish people. Turks started to understand that it is not because of nationality it is due to incompetency of refs. Referees often affected from fans or names of big clubs from Spanish, English, German sides. Collina was so good that nothing can affect him. So small clubs from Turkey etc. can stand against big clubs. For example Markus Merk is also one of the famous and respectful ref but there was a match of Galatasaray against Barcelona in Nou Camp in 2001. Gala was 2-0 ahead but suddenly Markus Merk came to scene and Match concluded with 2-2. Watch that match it is available in youtube. What you will think if you are a Turkish fan. One of the biggest name as ref is doing so much mistakes in one much you will start thinking he wanted to Barca to win. But we never had this experience with Collina. And by the time passed we started to understand that it is not because we are Turkish they are italian etc. Big clubs and their fans can affect Incompetent refs. even Refs having big names and fame such as Anders Frisk, Markus Merk etc. often protects teams like Barcelona, Real Madrid, Man Utd., Bayern Munich etc.

A T because you need us to seem as not racist. It suits you to look like you are humanist and accepting every culture and nation meantime it is suits us to seem as a country has close ties with West. Win and win. By the way western part of Turkey is part of Europe geographically but why Israel also a part of UEFA? Or Armenia, Georgia, Azerbeijcan. Most importantly why Kazakhstan? Is it because big LNG in Kazakhstan or Turkey being more contributable to UEFA in financial way from all Balkan countries combined? Money my friend money. Do you understand now?

@A T That is irrelevant to what the original poster is saying. He is saying there was a perceived bias in Turkey about referees in European competition. Whether there was or not I don't know. A lot of places and supporters think refs are bias against them. Perhaps there is some truth to what he says? I don't know but there is truth when he says Turkish people liked him because they perceived him to be fair.

I like this video. I started watching football in the early 2000s (I am American so don't hate me for it) but I remember him as the best referee. I was always hoping to him to referee in the CL and international matches. I think only Howard Webb was at his level. I hope he is doing well in retirement.

His magic was the trust he put on people. So we thought that we kept hope to win the match, because he was directing all on the pitch

The players always know how far they can push a ref and of course they knew that Colina was not for pushing at all,he only had to look at them and that was enough.Great person and great ref.

I always notices when he was on the field and I was watching a game he always demanded respect. He always was calm and sure of himself. An absolute great referee. He is missed in the game.

He is a legend in Turkey and people saw him as a lucky charm, Gala and the National team or ant Turkish team never ever lost a single match when he was the referee. Guess they had the secure feeling that he will be fair and objective anyway. They defeated the very top teams in that period and Gala won the Uefa and Super Cup (1996-2002 golden era which led also to bronze medal at world cup 2002) but he did only one time a mistake which he later admitted, in 99 germany-turkey in munich, after turkey had won the first match 1:0, turkey had a great oppurtunity to take the lead in the away match, but he gave offside and the match ended goalless. Other than that he was almost flawless and had the best referee aura and personality ever.

There was another great referee from Africa who is Said Belkola. He was the referee of the 1998 World Cup final between France and Brazil.

These are the people we need to be VARs, too old to do all the running around that comes with officiating but with all that experience. having someone like Collina be that extra pair of eyes would be a lot better than having current officials do it

Truly Legendary - and great research from GOLASIDE! - true that the turks love him to death as i think in something like 20+ games not even 1 lost game - inc. the UEFA final Galatasaray vs. Arsenal. The turks saw him like a luck charm and after his career he aired in many Adds in turkey... :-)

He's still missed. At a time wher VAR wasn't even an idea... he did what most referees often neglect: He was objective.

Why he was respected so much was that he got everything right. Again my team Man Utd won every game with him there. He took no crap from anyone. Only football ref I have ever seen that didn’t get back chatted to.

Maybe Footbal would be a better sport if more refs aimed to be like Collina.

He is a human and oc he made some mistakes (like any best player do), but he always understood if the moment needed a smile, a nice talk, an angry yell or simply a tough stare. I also think he was smart enough to use the way he look, high defined by his alopecia, realizing that it was a thing who could increase his charisma-perception. Goat’s debate are always heated discussion (cristiano Messi Maradona pele Ronaldo etc) (mj, kobe, lbj, wilt etc). Instead almost anyone football fan know who is the best football referee of all time.

i dont doubt some players in the heat of the moment have been pretty hard to handle, but i seems like the players respected him for what he did for the game being fair and not taking any BS from anyone.

Lo conosciuto personalmente. Fece il corso da arbitro perchè un suo amico lo inviutò a farlo, inizialmente non era interessato. I meet him often. He did the referee course because a friend of him suggest to follow that course, he was not very interested at first. In the 2002 wc final he wistle the end of the game only when he has the opportunity to pick the ball with him
