I can answer Clefable! So Clefable is kind of its own thing. It doesn't have any recovery like Chansey, and it doesn't have the bulk or Speed of Snorlax and Tauros either. What it does have, though are all those moves. It's basically a paralysis supporter that you can't block easily. Thunder Wave / Body Slam / Hyper Beam / Blizzard is the usual set I've seen, but some crackheads use Mega Kick for KO ranges or Psychic to more effectively contest Gengar. It was way better pre-paraslam as the T1 Thunder Wave leads of yore would get mauled by it. These days it can still do that, but it's sort of a mid-game annoyance if that makes sense. Don't try Sing though!

@wertyxq34682 жыл бұрын
My main concern is that this will lead to venusaur getting outclassed again and falling to nu, again. Which means the already stablished NU will have to reacomodate itself again for the threat that venusaur will pose, which means the pokemon that were good there because of venusaur's absense will also vanish, and in turn, NU will lose the identity that took so much effort to shape.

@@wertyxq3468 You are overexaggerating hard. NU is the Fire den.
@wertyxq34682 жыл бұрын
@@yourdagan you missed the entire point of my comment. You do know that the viability rankings were different when venusaur was in NU right? When venusaur ascended to UU, a lot of pokemon became better and worse as a result, others were given a chance to fill its place and perform on it's own way. The already shaped NU mategame in which Venusaur had its place suddenly became a different one once it left because of the new pokemon that now had a chance to shine. Granted, raichu was also there among others, so it won't be a complete regression, but even then, a lot of the effort that went into restructuring the metagame will be undone. Heck, maybe even poliwrath will get himself unbanned now that one of its checks has returned.
@yourdagan2 жыл бұрын
@@wertyxq3468 Because my point of concern and disagreement is on the "loss of identity", which I think is silly for the reason of the tier having no shortage of checks to it which are often underrated already. Also, it probably won't be outclassed since, if I'm not mistaken, they decided to ban Wrap in UU---so there goes Victreebel's main/only advantage.
@wertyxq34682 жыл бұрын
@@yourdagan the point on the "loss of identity" was about NU losing the new identity it made after losing the one it already had at the begining, which was functional to say the least. The over abundance of firetypes in Nu will keep it in check of course, but venusaur will still be the superior choice for the roles it can fulfill, which in turn results in tiering changes that had already happened before. It can check blastoise and nidoking somewhat better than say, exeggute. And yes, I believe you are mistaken. They did not decide to ban wrap on UU, rather the combination of agility plus wrap. This was to make the annoyance of endless trapping from dragonite more manageble, while keeping UU's identity of skillfull wrap play. In my knowledge, vctreebel didn't use wrap to cheese and harass the oppenent, rather it used it instead as a method of pivoting and getting him and its teammates in a safe spot. This was what made it good in UU, and OU to an extent, and it was also what made venusaur obsolete, as the only thing it had over vic was more phys def and speed, the former not being as important considering it can already get himself in a good position thanks to wrap, and the latter not being exactly relevant as it not outspeed anything that victribeel couldn't while making it matter. So the probabilities of venu dropping again are very high, and so are the changes it will bring along with him.

A real pokemon battle is 6v6, level 100 singles. NC just works that way (155 cap) because of Stadium mechanics, you should ALWAYS have 6 Pokes and the ONLY time a level cap makes sense is for Little Cup. I hate how they try to make Pokemon an e-sport, it's a total square peg... 6v6, level 100, singles will always be the real way to play.

Question from someone who isn’t too knowledgeable about RBY OU outside of the content I’ve seen on this channel. So Tauros, Chansey, and Snorlax are basically required on every competitively viable team, but what’s the mentality for picking the other three? I’m assuming you want a slot for pivoting through normal moves so a rhydon or gengar. You want a sleeper or just run sing on Chansey. And then there’s your choice of psychic type or multiple of such. Maybe you can use a tauros 2.0 like Persian. Are there team archetypes in RBY and is there an optimal final three?
@shaynehughes66452 жыл бұрын
As someone else that has no idea, I think you just summed it all up
@SkorpTS2 жыл бұрын
There's definitely not an optimal final three, as an opposing team can potentially always have a team that has a favorable matchup against yours, so a lot of it is kind of luck dependent. That's just how it is in Pokémon in general, not just in RBY. Which Pokémon you run in those last 3 slots also depends on what moves you run on the Big Three. For example, if you use Sing Chansey, you won't need another sleeper (although you could always bring one anyway). Despite the relatively small pool of viable Pokémon in RBY, there's a lot of combinations to try out (especially when you consider the moves can vary as well), so I'd say just experiment and see what works for you.
@tehtayteh2 жыл бұрын
As someone who plays the tier, the Big Three of OU have so many great matchups that you don't really need to run additional mons to cover matchups that the Big Three are weak to, so you can usually run almost any mon as long as it fulfills the specific niche your team requires. Generally though, you at least need a mon to fill the lead slot. Chansey technically works as a lead, since it has great matchups against leads that spread paralysis, but really doesn't like sleep leads like Jynx or Gengar. You don't really want to run Chansey as a lead. Besides the lead slot, you can customize the remaining slots to your heart's content. Is your team particularly weak to Electric types? Slap a Rhydon on your team and now you stonewall basically every Electric type. Want a fast Psychic type that can spread paralysis AND has great coverage? Use Starmie! Like partial-trapping and also want to switch in on a Tauros? Use Cloyster.
@kalvarr2 жыл бұрын
Tauros lax and chansey basically required Usually also a lead (usually along the lines of zam, jynx, starmie, gengar, or the occasional antimeta arcanine) tho some ppl just lead chansey which is great against para leads but bad against sleep leads Something else decently bulky like Exeggutor (imo 4th best mon) rhydon/golem, cloyster, slowbro, lapras, or occasionally articuno Last mon can either be another one from either of those lists, or either another sweeper like Persian, Victreebell (not very popular but usable) and dragonite, or something with more utility like jolteon, zapdos, hypno (rarely) moltres whichever fills whatever weaknesses your team still has best Realistically, tho in my experience in high ladder the most common are some combination of starmie, zam, exeggutor, jynx rhydon and cloyster
@ultimaterecoil11362 жыл бұрын
Technically speaking running only chansey and Tauros on para spam teams is a thing though that’s somewhat gimmicky but the idea is that you use para spreaders and mons that benifit from the speed support like a mon with a binding move or the swords dance users. Tauros still works well in such a context as it is fast enough to outspeed almost everything paralyzed but does gain a few notable things it outspeeds where as snorlax doesn’t have twave like chansey nor really benefit from the speed support like Tauros. But that’s really gimmicky and you’d probably be better off just using snorlax

It’s sad that Pinsir got unranked, but while I can see the whole “having more desirable moves than slots” thing can be a problem, I think it’s kind of interesting. Like, I think it’s more interesting for every Pinsir you fight in OU to use different combinations of those moves potentially. I get that movesets are as subject to meta as Pokémon themselves, but I just think that issue on Pinsir could make it more able to mix things up. If anything, as much as I also get the “only one of a given species per team” rule, I think it would be interesting if you could run multiple Pinsirs, each with completely different moves on that list. Would be a fun mix up when your two copies do completely different things. I know AI trainers in the campaign do this (specifically some Elite Four members and Lance in HGSS).
@FraserSouris2 жыл бұрын
I don't know. I feel not having Species Clause would tank what little usage Pinsir currently gets. Like, a lot of Pokemon fulfill similar roles to each other. Which means the best of that role will get first pick and the others may only get picked if you need more of that role. Big Yellow points this out. That the only reason people used DoDuo or Raticate was because you needed a backup Tauros you could use while preserving your main Tauros. If you could just use multiple Tauros, then you'd never ever need to use Duoduo or Raticate. The only Pokemon that would benefit from not having Species Clause, would be Pokemon that are either so powerful that it's hard to take down even one of them without requiring multiple counters and checks, or have so many different sets that just figuring out which one you're up against is half the battle and by the time you've figured it out, your counter is already been taken down. Pinsir doesn't really have any of those. It's not some serious threat where you'd want to bring multiple along. And its movesets aren't really amazing. Like, you know every Pinsir is going to have at least Swords Dance and Body Slam for sure. It can't function without it. That just leaves Hyper Beam, Slash, Submission and Seismic Toss to fill amongst 2 remaining move slots. So even if you bring multiple Pinsirs, it's not going to take long for the opponent to figure out what its remaining 2 moves are and how to counter them. Then what? If you switch to your other Pinsir, the opponent already knows why you're switching to this Pinsir and how they can capitalize.

first off, nice to see you recovered from The Virus second, as someone who's considering getting into RBY OU partly because of you (and partly because of Plague von Karma who keeps showing up on my reccomends), do you know any good guides for new players just getting into the tier and/or would you be interested in making one in the future? I know that your stuff is mostly based around lesser known things in certain games, but an in-depth look into RBY overall could be nice to have, given that (I assume) a lot of people could be gaining interest in the generation because of you in particular
@absent6122 жыл бұрын
also as someone who started liking raticate due to a crystal clear challenge where I had to do the first four gyms with a team initially composed of Rattata and Magikarp, seeing it mentioned in any way in a competitive context is a big W
@tehtayteh2 жыл бұрын
If you ever want to learn the tier, you can always look for sample teams on the Smogon forums. The Smogon RBY dex is a great place to learn each mon's gameplan and movesets.
@MusicoftheDamned2 жыл бұрын
Lol. That new ranking is probably the highest poor Raticate has ever been in anything. Good for it I guess. Also good to see that you seem to be feeling better already. Honestly I wasn't expecting another non-compilation video from you until next month, which would have fine as long as you were recovering well. Anyway, let us "pour one out", as they say, for Pinsir's fall though. At least it got a Mega five entire gens later, but it still does feel a bit insulting to be the worst Swords Dance user in Gen 1 even just by implication. (Especially since it's not like any of those mons save Venusaur amounted to anything otherwise.)
@BigYellowSilly2 жыл бұрын
At the very least Raticate is tip tier in ADV NU if I remember correctly, but yeah the rat has had it rough lmao
@MusicoftheDamned2 жыл бұрын
@@BigYellowSilly A check of Smogon shows you to be correct. Gens 3 and 4 seem to have been the kindest to Raticate before it fell down the cliff of irrelevance even more due to a power creep even Guts couldn't help stop. Still, at least it had those gens I suppose...unlike the even more scuffed Raticate-Alola. That poor Alolan thing started even more atrocious and can now only look at Obstagoon & weep in envy given it didn't even get more than one Gen before its unique typing was given to a mon infinitely better (even if one just really likes rodents). Hell, I keep forgetting that Game Freak went insane and got rid of Guts on Raticate-alola for the generally crappy ability is Hustle, though even if it had kept Guts, Obstagoon would still just be a better version of it in every way short of lacking priority. How pitiful.

Actually this vid is perfect timing! I've been theorymonning since yesterday in the ruins of alpha in showdown what if post rby evos were in rby? Like I.e rhyperior, Billsey and the like. I think it would be a neat concept porygon would finally have utility outside of stone walling snorlax with its enormous special stat and decent speed and its improved added bulk thanks to 85 hp really helps. Now for scizor and steelix I think we include their prevos typing for simplicity and don't include umbreon/espeon or any regional variats/evos. I'd like to see how these evos change rby maybe tauros will no longer be king maybe it still will who knows

I’m usually so far removed from reality when I build for OU in rby things are a lot simpler, at least when it comes to the species list, but the later I go in gen the more offbeat weirdos end up on the big stage my gen 5-7 teams often revolve around facilitating RU pokemon that happen to match up well into the tier’s staples here’s to more OU pinsir, in spite of the viability rankings!

Gems being banned out of Gen 5 makes me sad. I understand the why of Dragon Gem Boosted Draco Meteor being a problem, but I legit liked the gems as a bit of synergy witht he likes of Acrobatics and Unburden.
@imaginaryboy20002 жыл бұрын
I can understand why they did it; npt only are gems really strong in their own right, even in the fast-and-furious Gen 5 metagame, but they also make those specific pokemon that use the synergy one-trick ponies, making them too strong with little counterplay unless you use one Trick. Too easy to slap on a team, to versatile to reliably predict, and too strong to safely counter.
@sephikong83232 жыл бұрын
The main problem I have with the ban of Gems is that ...... first I would have looked at Keldeo before Gems as Keldeo is by far the worst offender in the metagame and second ...... Reuniclus do be looking good, and I don't like it when Reuniclus do be looking good. If you also ban Reuniclus/Magic Guard then maybe we can talk, but I think it's going to become more and more centralizing again
@munchrai63962 жыл бұрын
The part that I can't stand is that gen 5 is the only generation where most of the gems even exist making them an integral part of gen 5. Its like if Amnesia was given to more Pokemon in gen 1. The move is like never used in any other game so if it ever got banned it would be a bloody tragedy

I don't know if this would fit with the types of videos you do but I think it would be cool to look at the TM's of Gen 1 and some oddities of Pokémon learning moves you wouldn't expect or moves that are TM's that barely any Pokémon learn. 2 examples I'd bring up are the strange set of Pokémon that learn Teleport by TM and how Softboiled is a TM but it is only learned by Chansey and that one weird cat thing nobody's supposed to really have, Mew.

Ah yes, the flinch on Low Kick. Look, not gonna talk about Low Kick or Machamp here, just flinching. I was never interested in competitive before discovering you, but I still liked flinch, always a nice effect to get (or terrible if it happens to you). But damn, in my current XD run, once I got a Pupitar with Rock Slide, flinching became as much of a staple in my run as freaking Sandstorm is in Gen 3 OU. On both sides: the enemy flinches me (particularly with Fake Out) as much as I flinch them. My point: I always knew flinch was good, but this run has shown me just how powerful it truly is
