I have a 4 x 8 foot raised bed that's dedicated to garlic. Much of it is German Red and California White, but there are other types that I'm experimenting with. One is called Transylvania Soft Neck. I got a good laugh out of the name, but it's supposed to be a spicy garlic, so I got a few bulbs to try. One other is called Nootka Rose, which was discovered at a farmer's market on an Indian reservation in the Pacific Northwest. This one took about 2 to 3 weeks longer to sprout, so if you're planting this one, you need to be patient. I got the German Red and the California White off of Amazon, really inexpensive. Less than $15 for two pounds. I was surprise that it all sprouted and is doing well. I agree with you about garlic. Garlic and onions are used in almost everything we would eat for any dinner in the US. Everyone with a garden should be growing them. I probably planted about 6 pounds of garlic in this bed. I'll have plenty to share with friends and family - and I'll make sure to save the biggest bulbs for planting the next season.

I planted Spanish Roja this year, about 70 cloves or more. I covered them with crushed leaves in a newer raised bed. I added some 5-10-10 because we used up all the rabbit manure for the summer. I do hope they do well. We stockpile our rabbit manure early spring and let the rain wash out the acid from it before it goes in the gardens. We are in NNY State, Zone 4A. I enjoy your videos and the info you give. Thumps Up!

The green shoots themselves are also insanely hardy. Mine are up about 2”. It has been in the teens about 15 of the last 30 nights, and in the single digits a couple times. They’re a bit ratty, but the shoots are still alive.

That elephant garlic is impressive! It's been a long time since I've grown it, but the size of the bulbs & cloves was astounding! I just found out recently that elephant garlic is more closely related to leeks than garlic, which I found interesting. I'm curious how far apart you space yours given the large size? Hope you have a wonderful weekend!

Zone 7b.. I plan to give it a try this year. I have a question, once planted how often do I water and fertilize?
@GrowfullywithJenna3 жыл бұрын
Fertilize in early spring when top growth begins and then again just as bulbs begin to swell (usually about May, depending on when you planted). If we don't get rain, I generally try to water my garlic once a week (he equivalent of one -half to one inch of water per week), but stop watering about 2 weeks before harvest. I’m in Hawaii @ sea level, rainfall is avg but during the summer it’s hot & dry. Winters can be wet which turns the soil into mud. I hv clay soil but it’s full of weed roots that are imbedded in the soil on our whole property. I hv soil with thick (like 4-5 inches) of weed roots? These weeds are stubborn. I hv found the weed growing under the soil. How do I get rid of the thick layer of weed roots? There’s probably more roots than soil.😮 We also have rocks & some huge boulders under the top of the ground. Do I hv the sift out the big (3-5+ inches) rocks before planting? I thought of Hugel method but once roots hit the top layer of dirt it won’t be able to grow past the thick layer of weed roots. So how do I prep my clay soil? How do I get rid of the layers of thick weed roots? (Do I till the weed roots into the soil? I’ve found they grow back.) Do I till the weed roots into soil? Into the soil? Or do I use a broad fork? How do I deal with the larger rocks (2-3inches)? Do I sift it out? Do I have to excavate all the boulders (that look little at first😳)? How do I know what nutrients my soil needs so I can add the right kind of nutrients? I’m a beginner gardener & old (65+) and I’m a “Married-Single Wife/mother”! 😬🙄 Which’s means I have a husband but I have to do everything myself!😒😥 So can’t lift a lot weight, but I can still (kinda) move.😬 Arthritis in hips, Trauma Induced Arthritis (Never knew that existed in until I clipped my ankle with a power washer).🫣 I have mini (pygmy) goats, chickens & 5 ducks. The duck water is like miracle grow for plants! My husband has a backhoe but that’s too much power! I hv a little tiller (that I can push). I use a cordless drill to dig out the weeds 😬 it works like a charm…saves my arthritic hands. I want to try using a power washer to dig out the clumpy & deep rooted weeds! Has anyone tried this?! Seems like it would work.🤔😂 I hope you can help with these issues to prepping my clay, weed rooted, rock imbedded soil so I can even start planting a garden.

Hello and I'm sorry I missed your comment- I try to reply more promptly than this! In your growing conditions, I would be very tempted to try hugelkultur- building up, rather than trying to deal with all the issues under your soil. This video shares the basics of the hugelkultur technique: kzbin.info/www/bejne/q2m2iKernbFmqdE

Where do you buy your garlic and are there any other sources you recommend? I'm guessing it's too late to find any in seed garlic bulbs for planting in stock in January as far as hardneck garlic - I'm in Zone 5a so I need the hardneck variety. Have you ever planted store-bought garlic from your local grocery store? Is that mostly softneck garlic? It's so much cheaper than planting garlic from the seed companies, which is like $19 a pound instead of $4 a pound or so at the grocery store. Since some of it starts sprouting in my pantry, I know store bought garlic can be viable. What would happen planting softneck garlic in the upper midwest? Thanks!
@carlschnackel30517 ай бұрын
What you buy in the store is usually California White, a soft neck variety. It does really well in California. As far north as you are, it might not do nearly as well. I was able to get two pounds of German Red, hard neck garlic, off of Amazon for about $15. If you're in the north, hard neck will probably work better for you than soft neck.

First year in 20+ years to not get my garlic planted in the fall because I was/am ill. What temp is ideal to put it in for dormancy so I can plant it first thing in the spring. I’m fortunate to have a root cellar would that be a good place? I also have a storage place in the floor under the house and a refrigerator. It is hard neck variety Musik. Thanks for your help! Pretty bummed I didn’t get my garlic in after purchasing a good seed after a poor harvest this year because of extreme heat.

This article from Texas A&M recommends 6-8 weeks at or below 40F aggie-horticulture.tamu.edu/vegetable/files/2011/10/garlic.pdf I've heard that in general, putting the garlic in a crisper drawer in the fridge works just fine to achieve vernalization.

Thank you for the great video!! I am in Southernwestern Ohio, what are your thoughts on optimum planting time in fall. I will be planting 60# of music garlic this fall. I grew some last year with good success. I planted and strawed in late October but still had decent amount of green growth before it really got cold. Seems like the seasons have shifted.... staying warmer longer and taking forever to warm in spring lol. Thank you , looking forward to more videos

Hi Dan! Last year I tested out 3 planting times- October 20, October 30 and November 11. I saw no discernible difference between the 3. I used to always plant mid-October, but find that I can push it later because the weather stays warmer, longer (as you've observed). My general rule is just to shoot for Halloween. I'd say as long as you're planting somewhere between late October and mid-November, you're probably hitting the sweet spot!

Hello Jenna, your fellow Ohioian here. I wanted to also plant my garlic cloves in the soil of my garden, so many others plant in raised beds. I understand garlic likes loamy and I have clay, but! I feel like I could take my chances.. opinion? :]]
@GrowfullywithJenna3 жыл бұрын
Hi Ann! I’ve had good luck with garlic planted in relatively clay-y soil. The one thing I would suggest is to make sure you don’t plant in an area that has poor drainage- garlic will rot if it sits in wet, cold soil all winter. I like to make a raised planting row for my garlic when planting in clay. And if you can add aged manure or compost to your planting area, your garlic will thank you! Hope this helps!
