The biggest fail here is that the one game that featured Cloud Strife going up against Solid Snake isn’t on a PlayStation platform
@UltimaKeyMaster5 жыл бұрын
Better yet, Cloud FINALLY got his home game released on said platform...just in time for Joker to become the new "PlayStation dude in Smash" joke. Nintendo had the balls to do this TWICE. Hell, thrice if you count Snake, but at least this game bothered to have Raiden.

@@underdog353777 agreed this video sucks and his i dont even think he has good arguments why PSASBR failed, yes the roster sucks and the stage design sucks BUT who the fuck cares about slapstick or art style or the way characters contrast. Also making this game into a traditional fighter is the opposite of what most people wanted, the majority wanted a straight up PLAYSTATION SMASH BROS, one huge reason why this game failed is because it didnt copy smash enough in terms of gameplay and scoring system EDIT: this game mostly sucked because of the gameplay. You can only kill via Supers meaning everything else you do is just a way to fill a super meter. On top of that certain characters had OP as shit supers that could KO 4 ppl while other characters had terrible supers that only KO'd one character. It was terrible game play system, they would have been much better off copying Smash scoring and gameplay than what they ended up doing. Imagine Smash for a second but the only way you can kill is by using the Smash ball, zero other ways to kill, score points, knock opponents off the map.fact in PSALBR the maps didnt have ledges due to the shitty system.

Agreed. Even more so when he says that Snake of all characters didn't feel as out of place in comparison. I think he's not really grasping what "slapstick" actually entails. I'd say Smash 64 was the only time where one could say everybody and everything had bounce and wacky SFX and an almost comical style that portrayed "slapstick action". Afterward it more depended on the characters' animations. Friendlier characters like Mario still sports expanding fists and feet when attacking while cuddly fighters like Kirby and Pikachu stretch and flatten in cartoonish fashion. Samus never did anything close to this. Not in 64 when she was at her brightest and most disproportionate, and certainly not ever since. All of her actions are to the point and considerably reserved compared to the less serious characters. And yet she's hardly a huge contrast. Not when you also have armored swordsmen and space traveling animals and magic wielders and martial artists. There are plenty of characters with a more serious tone. "Slapstick" doesn't describe the gameplay either. Sure it's far from realistic to see fighters flying and careening everywhere. It's definitely wacky and crazy. But not slapstick as a whole.

"I don't want to buy Smash Bros. based on (Metroid's) inclusion." Now first off, you're definitely a minority in that regard. The brilliant, goofy commercial showing four people in costumes beating each other up while "So Happy Together" plays in the background was an insta-buy for me and thousands of others. MaximillianDood of Doodbronia did numerous videos on the importance of characters in fighting games. My big hype for the inclusion of certain characters isn't solely on Sakurai's brilliant attention to detail, mountains of references and slapping music tracks. It's the fact that the characters included in Smash are now recognized as gaming icons. Millions of people are going to see Ridley or Banjo and go "Oh this character is cool! I wonder what game he/she is from" and then want to get into that franchise. Smash Bros. introduced me to Metroid and Earthbound, which are now some of my favorite games. Fire Emblem was not even relevant in the west until Marth came to Melee, now it's one of Nintendo's biggest IPs. The biggest example is Megaman, who was included in 2014's Smash 4. Before that, Megaman fans were practically beaten to death by Capcom with about a dozen games getting cancelled and Mighty No. 9 being a tire-fire. Now in 2019 Capcom is actually giving Megaman the respect he deserves: he got a new game, countless collections and even crosses over with other franchises now. By god I hope that happens with Banjo-Kazooie, or at least Castlevania. Playstation All-Stars literally lost me by not including Crash. Crash fucking Bandicoot: literally THE most famous Playstation icons and Sony just couldn't bother to talk to Activision to let them borrow him. Meanwhile Sakurai dives into oncoming traffic to get Cloud and Solid Snake. It shows that Sony didn't love their characters as much as Nintendo loves theirs. (Nintendo loves theirs TOO much, but I'll take that over too little.)
@bdo3335 жыл бұрын
Gotta agree. Smash introduced me to a buncha franchises because I thought a character was cool. Plus you gotta look at all the love and representation Smash got. I cant be the only one who would read the trophy descriptions to know about characters origins or go to sound test to listen to the music.
@toonzach28705 жыл бұрын
Honestly, while Samus is a very serious character, I would say she still fits in pretty well with the tone of Smash Bros., especially since the series has taken on a slightly more serious (if over the top) tone since Melee and just becoming more edgy with Brawl. Also all the Metroid characters have a good amount of color to them, like the rest of the cast, so I still think they make sense. I kind of raised an eyebrow at that part of the video, but I guess it's to each their own.
@marzipancutter81445 жыл бұрын
Imo as a Metroid and competitive Smash fan, the game does a good job conveying the feeling of even the more serious characters. You don't feel slapstick when you play as Ridley, for example. With the effects on his moves he manages to convey all of the brutality and ruthlessness from his home game. They make a big effort to have the characters represent their home games properly.

"Sony just couldn't bother to talk to Activision to let them borrow him. Meanwhile Sakurai dives into oncoming traffic to get Cloud and Solid Snake." lol as if whether a company agrees to a licensing deal or not depends on the passion of game director. Super Smash is one of Nintendo's mainline entires while PS Allstars was just a small spin-off non-important title while Sony were pouring their money into big titles like Uncharted and The Last of Us.

I think one BIG problem is licenses. Nintendo owns, or at least has a majority ownership, 90% of the Smash bros IPs. Sony doesn't have as many IP's it directly owns. Crash and Spyro are activision for example and that means license deals need funding. I'd also say there's a big difference in how Sony and nintendo operate. nintendo is 100% a games company, and they have an old-school-Disney-esk ethos of making charming games that everyone can play leading to that easier meshing of styles. Sony games is a portion of a larger corperation that mostly has other people make games for them and any games they can. And if one studio wanted to leave an IP behind that was fine with them. Their library has changed and evolved over time to fit the market. Both ways are valid and both have seen success and failure, but Sony's approach to IP building is just to let older titles wither on the vine.

Nimte do was able to create two great he's on their based of their first party IPs and then with that reputation start to find guest characters. By current smash companies are way more likely to beg for Nintendo to be in Smash because it solidifies your work in what is slowly becoming the gaming canon christallized. smash bros characters all feel like how they are supposed to feel (if that makes any sense) mario in smash feels like mario in mario games, as does luigi, as does bowser. kirby in smash feels like kirby in kirby games, as does metaknight, as does king DeeDeeDee Pikachu feels like pikachu, etc, etc. they all play like you would expect them to play in their own game. as for psasbr Sweet tooth.... doesn't feel like sweet tooth. last time i checked, sweettooth drove an icecream truck with guns on it and fired homing clown heads; he didn't carry a chainsaw and jump around. sly cooper was a stealthy character that specialized in quiet assassination and sneaking about, not melee combat. infact, sly games often tell you to try to avoid combat, because you aren't a bruiser like murray. etc, etc.

As a counterpoint to Samus, she still works in Smash because she's essentially that crossover's Straight Man/Only Sane Man trope. All these wacky, zany characters slapping each other around would make Samus eye roll half the time with the amount of tragic crap she's been through and fought her way out of. She works because she's the ONLY no nonsense serious character in the entire roster, even Ridley pushes it closer to the cast because he was a cocky prick in his trailer while we see Samus in said trailer going "oh not this guy again..." Even the characters in Smash that have tragedies in their stories (literally all of the sword wielders, and I don't just mean Fire Emblem) have moments of light hearted antics. When you have PSASBR (good Lord why) have Big Daddy, Sweet Tooth, that Killzone guy and friggin DmC Dante as some of your highlights, you've flatly missed the point of the more serious characters in a wacky Smash game. And even better for the unifying art style point: As Max will tell you, Smash's rendition of other fighting game characters. Ryu, Ken and Terry look like they firmly belong in the same universe as the purple pterodactyl, yellow electric rat and more than half a dozen anime swordsmen. A perfect example is his first super, where he shoots a lightning bolt diagonally in the air at short range. HOW SITUATIONAL IS THAT?! His second super is a goblet homing attack that can be dodged pretty easily if you know what your doing, so again, pretty useless against hardcore players. I mean, Kratos was marketed as All-Stars 'Mario' character and designed for beginners to be easy to pick up and play. Having these violent characters from gruesome games mixing alongside the G and PG-rated characters just seemed so tonally weird. Corpse stomping, limb cutting Isaac Clark just seems absurdly out of place. There are so many third-party characters that have a long history with Playstation and they chose to modern, multi-platform games (some of which hadn't even been released and some, like Bioshock, which not only released later on PS3 but also ran terribly). I had a friend that owned it, and we actually put in quite a few hours into it. Had pretty good times. But the game is undeniably flawed. It's like every positive thing comes with a bigger negative to reach a net loss. I actually thought the stage designs and graphics were interesting (mostly) and worked well, and the stage worlds crashing together was interesting and unique. ...But then the default stage motions and hazards were easy to lose characters in and distracting. Admittedly a smaller problem since many things could be turned off, but still. The character designs were pretty good and the motions were well executed for representing the characters' personalities. ...But they all clash against eachother and generally don't fit the areas they're in. Cohesive design would have done wonders. The core mechanic- the Special kills- feel amazing to land. They also feel TERRIBLE to miss. They also mean that whoever masters the one-to-two special kills will fundamentally have an advantage against anyone who opts for 3rd tier specials by preference (or lack of skill at landing lower specials). I frequently built large leads in matches against my friends simply due to the fact that I was better at (mostly 2nd tier) lower specials than my friends, so they "learned" to opt for the overpowered 3rd tiers... which meant they didn't pull off as many moves, and thus kept losing anyways. Like a handicap rubber-banding mechanic for weaker players that also doesn't actually help. I admit I'm not sure how I would fix the situation with the game's core setup, outside of an overhaul. The gameplay was actually decently fun, and pulling off combos was rewarding if silly. Except for the fact that movement never felt quite... "natural". Like jumping never quite felt right, or maybe too floaty for the realistic characters. The menus look bad. Like stock placeholder buttons and mono-color backgrounds that were meant to be replaced at some stage of development. There is no positive point for them. A big comment, I know, but I have surprisingly strong feelings about a game I'm almost equivalently neutral towards. Part of me hopes it gets a second chance some day. The rest of me hopes it stays silent forever.

What's unique about the success of the competitive scene of Smash Bros is the technical competitive mechanics of the game are not necessary to get a full base experience. The mechanics that give you more combo potential are only optimizations (such as cancelling landing lag or giving precise positional control), and not hard-coded set combo systems. Without the optimizations, you can still develop a cohesive feel for the game and enjoy it at it's core elements. What is also important is that Smash Bros is mechanically simple with complex options, which gives it a lane as a casual game while still giving it competitive elements to surprise your friends with.

The way the characters are made, work extremely well for a 1v1 style game. The stages were built for party game, but the move sets worked on stages that were made for 1v1 combat. If people had health bars and were in a 1v1 arena, this game would shine much more. It has wall combos, standard combos that lead into bursts, and special moves. An extremely deep fighting system. @Elvick it's a bad concept because Sony doesn't have the clout to pull it off, Nintendo has more than 30 years of experience making software and all the history (and more importantly IP's) that comes with it. Sony didn't even go full into producing games until late in the PS3 life, which means that the biggest Sony icons aren't _Sony_ icons at all, they are icons that happened to be on PS. How many not gritty man with stubble characters do you think Sony has popped out since the first all star game? Knack and Astrobot. I don't know about you but I don't want another game split between old ass characters from when cartoon mascots where in vouge and gritty old ass men with beards and guns. Like it or not, that IS the Sony family. Your comment itself perfectly outlies why it's a poor concept. None of the characters you say are must haves are owned by them at all, and some of them owned by some of the stingiest companies out there like craptivision and Squeenix. The only other video game company with a catalog of characters as diverse and far reaching as Nintendo is Crapcom (Sega a close third), three guesses as to which two companies are known for massive video game crossovers.

The "defeat only by Super" mechanic was done way better in the Saint Seiya fighting games for the PS2. There you only get 1 round, and if you are defeated, you can stand again doing some button mashing, but it gets increasingly difficult to the point you will no longer get up, but if you defeat your opponent with a Super, they don't even access the recovery screen. This is a really cool mechanic, because this super moves can be reversed if you know the quick time event to do a counter mid animation, keeping it with the lore of "no move works twice on a saint" as performing a super and not defeating an opponent means you revealed/reminded them your timing, so next time you perform it can be countered with ease, encouraging the strategic use of the Supers. By no means it's a good competitive fighting game, but the concept of Super-only-defeat is done masterfully.

Yeah, people have found similarities/connections between these rivalries to try and justify them. You can argue whether or not the developers thought on that level, but if you knew these connections, it actually made the rivalries feel pretty clever. However, this information is completely lost on the player unless they know who these characters and their games are, which makes the rivalries just seem like random choices.
@dark0ssx5 жыл бұрын
The gameplay was shit. Its actually a traditional 2D fighter in terms of mechanics. There are no physics like in smash bros. Character will react the same each time (going the same distance and direction) and so its a game of repeatable combos that always land. Smash bros has way more combos than this game were you repeat the same 2 or 3 over and over. The super to kill mechanic is also the worst mechanic i have ever seen in a game. Spend 2 minute building super, miss, and feel awful about all that wasted effort.
@DualPurpose5 жыл бұрын
Why is the super mechanic the worst mechanic? Its better than literally falling off a stage! Its tactical and strategic. It makes a kill something special and gratifying to achieve. You even have a defense for the super you can avoid it! Or like you said you can miss! Well that gives a lot of depth to Super kills. Depending on your character you would have to strategize how you planned on landing your super. It didn't come down to just a knock off the stage! Or just getting beaten up to 0 on a health bar. Idiot
@3.2187_Kilometres5 жыл бұрын
@@DualPurpose just ignore the simple fact that because you could only kill with supers two characters (Kratos and Kat) basically ruled the game and made it unfun and super moves having depth is one of the worst arguments I have seen when some super moves at 3 charge just give you an instant screen wipe and the others 3 charge take so long to charge that it is often not worth going for that long. (This makes character like Sir Daniel unviable as his 1 charge is crap) also ruins the point of certain character archetypes such as 'zoners' who can't get any charge while shooting projectiles and so are near completely useless. Finally the charge gimmick was just a gimmick to try to make it seem like it wasn't just a super smash bros clone and it failed miserably. Also super smash bros requires combos to get to a high percent to kill someone, if you fall off the stage and die at 0 percent that just your own bloody fault. Idiot.

I can appreciate the critique of the game suffering from not knowing whether to choose between a serious or casual fighting game aesthetic in terms of design, but, ironically, that's a big part of where a lot of my enjoyment from this game came from. I have always wanted to like traditional fighting games, but found the barrier for entry exceedingly frustrating, because it requires memorization of long, often not very intuitive combos in order to play well. And while I had fun playing Smash Bros, my absolute least favorite part of them was actually a feature you mentioned you felt leant to a more fun party game experience: random deaths due to ring outs. Smash's chaotic action makes it really easy to lose track of your character and fall off the edge of the stage, which is really annoying when you're at a party with a lot of other people very skilled at the game - the number of times I've been to a party where I only got to play Smash for about three seconds before being forced to watch the two remaining expert players get to duke it out for about fifteen more minutes nearly put me off liking that series. So to have a game that had just enough complexity to demand attention without button mashing that didn't just toss out random deaths, but also was flexible enough that you could pick up a character and get the gist of them after hitting some buttons hit my sweet spot.

One more comment on the Super Moves just while the conversation is alive: They sucked and were terribly unbalanced. The best characters in All-Stars weren't characters who were good in the traditional sense but were characters who could just roundabout loop their Specials over and over again. Kratos and Kat got so much returns and so much benefit out of their Supers that they pretty much ruled the game. Meanwhile a character like Raiden who had technical combos and borderline infinites with great moves and movement was shafted because his Specials by contrast weren't so great in the same way as other character's were. With Supers being the only way to win games, it also made "zoning" characters irrelevant since there was no benefit to actually attacking your opponent. Keeping them out of your range did nothing because eventually you would have to use your Super to kill them and often times the further you were the harder it was to use them even on characters with ranged Supers. The game tried to have all this complexity and cater to a meta but the thing that really killed the game is the pointlessness of the main combat. Tech didn't matter, combos only mattered if you had Supers to take advantage of them, neutral was detrimental rather than the normal state of the game because there was no benefit to be had from it, etc. All-Stars would be doomed to fail from the start because it wouldn't take long for the novelty of the Supers to fal off and what players would be left with were games that simply didn't matter.
