Thank you Mukesh ji, for the stimulating panel discussion conducted with the trademark, incisive questions that examine the political theatre called Indian parliament and the actors participating in it. While it's always been a treat to listen to a thinker like Arun Kumar Tripathi"s erudition on the state of the polity and performance of politicians or Nirendra Nagar's succinct critiques, I am constrained to point out the ignorance of Dr Prem Kumar and the obvious prejudice and presumptions with which he commented on the recently elected MPs from Manipur vis-a-vis opportunity given for maiden speech in the loksabha. Dr A Bimol Akoijam(Congress )has been elected from the inner Manipur constituency (Valley area which includes several villages inhabited by various non- Meitei, non-naga tribes) and Alfred Kan-ngam Arthur (Congress) has been elected from the outer Manipur (the hill areas). The two well educated candidates polled approximately 51% and 48% votes respectively. Dr Akoijam is a well-known academic who teaches in JNU and is widely respected writer and public intellectual. Mr Arthur, son of a former bureaucrat, is a former MLA and rock musician and social activist. They're highly evolved human beings who care deeply about democracy and welfare of people across the spectrum and a United Manipur and are against all divisive forces, be it any political party or any local insurgent or the myriad 'tribal' groups with constantly changing demands for 'seperate administrative structures or territory.' Mr Arthur, unlike what Dr Prem Kumar said, is a Tangkhul (from Ukhrul district) one of the major orginal tribes who have had a shared history with the Meiteis, going back thousands of years, and doesn't belong to any 'Kuki' tribes who, as per GOI documents, have been referred to as "refugees" till as late as 1967. Dr Kumar, for his credibility, should know that being blindsided by anger and vehemence against a political party in power doesn't help and the loksabha has it's constraint of time when allocating time to the elected members. Dr Akoijam was perhaps chosen as he's the senior in age and and public stature and they both are from the Congress party. I'm sure, we'll get to hear Mr Arthur deliver his maiden speech. FYI, I'd urge you to check out his interviews (in English)on KZbin where he holds forth on democracy, economy and governance etc. You may be pleasantly surprised. 18:56
