I was horrifically depressed since childhood. It was relentless. I assumed it would ultimately end me somehow. About twelve years ago I randomly accepted the offer from a friend of a few doses of mushrooms. I did them two consecutive nights alone. First night was pretty mild. The second night? Wow. I saw my depression from every angle, realized much. Next day: depression totally gone. Never came back, never coming back. It's like it's a forest far away I can remember, and could probably find again with enough effort, but it has zero impact on anything in my life or mind. They honestly saved my life and improved it immensely. I never did them again, either. I wish there was a good, organized way to administer them to people who would benefit from them.

As a Portuguese i can tell you that back in the 90's almost every Portuguese family had a family member or a neighbour or a friend who o.d. or died of aids complications or went to jail ( all heroin related ) The aproach of seeing this people as someone who needs help and not punishment was our best decision.
@volatile_zer02 жыл бұрын
I'm Portuguese too but raised mostly in the UK. My mum is from that exact generation that was hit hard by the sudden influx of drugs into the country. She had a lot of friends from when she was a teenager in the 80s who died from ODs, and she's resented drug use in all forms ever since. The damage that drugs can do to entire communities is not to be taken lightly, and I really sympathize with the pain she felt in seeing the people around her fall victim to them, but the exact circumstances NEED to be taken into account to truly understand why the drug crisis happened. It wasn't a case of "people smoked joints, and then they died." It was the lack of education, the uncontrolled opening-up of Portugal to the outside world after Salazar's austere rule, and a strongly opinionated, judgemental, predominantly Catholic societal culture that made it such a huge problem. Not to mention the fact that those teenagers moved onto stuff like coke and heroin faster than you could even finish a joint. That's the bit that people seem to forget, people like my mum, and then the effectiveness of this modern solution of decriminalisation as adopted by Portugal is harshly dismissed simply because it doesn't punish drug use. It's like complaining that using water to extinguish fire won't work because water is soft, and saying that what you need is more fire.

Phillip Pascual if the philippines spent their money on treatment instead of the drug war, they'd only have to spend half the money for it to be effective. plus it would reduce theft and violent crime, because prices of drugs would go down, allowing people to use and support their families without having to steal. it would also reduce the burden on the healthcare system, for all those people catching HIV and hepatitis from needles. instead of the government using tax money to keeo these people in jail, housing them, feeding them, and paying for guards and staff 24 hours a day, those people could instead go to work and *pay* taxes instead of costing tax money to be locked up. when all the savings are added up, the philippines would actually *make* money off of decriminalization, and using treatment instead.

As a portuguese, I am very happy with our drug policy. Nontheless, there are still a few inconveniences, if not problems in the way we handle drugs. 1) Drugs in Portugal are still seen and analyzed against the standard established in the 90s by heroin. This means that if you are caught smoking a joint in a park and if the police officer decides to bring you in, you´ll be treated like a complete addict (and interrogated by the police officers to know where you bought the drugs). When I was caught with less than 0.2g of hash, I was brought before a counsil of therapists that tried to figure out if I was an addict in need of help, which I´m not. Bottom line is, as a consumer of even light drugs like marijuana, you will be brought before the entire might of the bureaucratic health system of the country. We should be looking out for diseased people that have lost everything to alcohol and heroin, and not teenagers who like to smoke weed. Weed should be completely legal and regulated. This obviously comes from the fact that Portugal is still a very catholic country that holds a number of social prejudices against drugs like cannabis. 2) The second biggeste problem is the fact that as an addict, you will not be taken care of in a cooperative way by health professionals. The way an addict enters the health system that protects them is through the police, who is usually violent and cohersive, not to talk about the fact that all of this only happens if the ammount of drugs you´re carrying are below 5g. Any more and you´ll be prosecuted (and police officers will always try to make sure you are over the "Legal" ammount). The problem with the police handling the entry of the addict into the system is that police officers are not trained proprely to handle people with such patology, and thus, it is much more likely for an addict to be overwhelmed by this makeshift justice system converted into a humanist health system than he is to look for and accept help. The main point is: decriminalization should only be temporary, as a way for society to lose its prejudice against drugs and drug addiction. The role of helping drug addicts should belong to health professionals and should not have a single trace of punition. The main goal is to reach a point in which drugs can be available in society (especially weed and hash), but we are able to respect their users while we guarantee that the consequences of drugs are of public knowledge - essentially helping people who really need help
@sijcecilio3 жыл бұрын
I would do anything just to have those "inconveniences" apply to my country (Philippines) as well. You have it so good, meanwhile innocent people are killed left and right here, just so police will get reward money from this stupid ass president. Drug users are treated like demons here, instead of people who need help.
@goncalomendes15123 жыл бұрын
Smoking weed is a problem. Not because of simply doing it, but because it's the first step for most of the drug addicts that exist here. We do not have the "civic culture" to allow it like countries such as Austria or Netherlands. I believe it should be a long term thing to legalize its consumption but it would require a lot, starting by the education in schools.
@dboy24623 жыл бұрын
@@goncalomendes1512 Even heroin and other hard drugs should be legaly regulated and prescribed for users by doctors. Watch this: m.kzbin.info/www/bejne/kKrCaWmfi82gobM This doctor eliminated overdose deaths and 93% of the crimes committed by addicts by prescribing them medical-grade heroin and cocaine. Many addicts were able to work and become productive citizens thanks to it. The huge majority of problems blamed on drugs are caused by prohibition.

And even if they somehow manage to stop everything at the Mexican border, they will just bring it using boats and aircrafts. In fact, cargo drones are getting cheaper every day. They could just buy like a thousand cargo drones and put 10kg on each. Even if some of them get taken down they would still make hundreds of millions.

thank you for finally doing this video!!! i've been posting about portugal's strategy on basically every video you've done about drugs for the last year. imprisonment is immensely expensive, and costs the tax payers dearly. each person needs not only housing and food, but also staff to be on guard and run the complex 24/4. it's not efficient. and worst of all, it doesn't rehabilitate users, but rather makes them more likely to use the minute they get out. it's a broken system that's only kept alive by the for-profit prison lobby. you can spend 1/2 as much money on treatment, and actually rehabilitate these people, get them back into the world as productive members of society who pay taxes, rather than draining our tax money to put into the pockets of these for-profit prison CEO's pockets. not only that, but helping people to use safely means no overdoses from random fentanyl cut drugs, and far less HIV and hepatitis, which reduces the strain on our medical system. it saves money and lives. there is absolutely zero reason to not pick up this model. it's the most utilitarian, keeps the most people safe, reduces robberies and violent crime and overdoses and strain on the healthcare system. and it just costs less than putting people in jail, while also rehabilitating them so they pay taxes instead of using taxes. why has no one else picked up this model yet? it's ridiculous. it's all the for-profit prison lobbies who pay the politicians billions of dollars during election cycles so they can keep filling their jails with inmates so they can make more money. and these lobbies will give money to media companies too, "encouraging" them to talk about drug use as a moral failing, rather than an issue of circumstance and psychological disorders. so they keep the public on their side, without the public really even knowing what they're supporting. aside from that, decriminalization would be a massive hit to the profits of the gangs and smugglers in south america, who will no longer find it profitable to traffic drugs, because people can get cheaper, purer, pharmaceutical grade drugs in america without having to deal with shady cartels. it would stop people fleeing over our southern border, because the cartels would fall apart without their main source of income. then mexico and south and central america can become more productive members of our trade agreement, having the resources to industrialize more and provide goods at a cheaper price without forcing us to rely on china. there is literally no down side. to anyone. not one single down side.

In 2001 I was 6. so since I can comprehend what drugs are that it's been like this and only as an adult I discovered that Portugal was the only country where people don't go to jail. And it's CRAZY to me. I am aware that in the 80s and 90s the drug problem was huge with the influence of the english music scene for example. But nowadays it's rare that I see a drug addict. Two very different approaches to dealing with drugs and addiction in two very different countries. Very eye opening!! IMO drug addiction needs to be understood as a mental health issue not a criminal issue. And not simply an individual's health issue...the result of a weak character or circumstances unique to a particular individual, but a systemic problem. When so many people are addicted then it's a reflection of a larger societal issue...it's no longer simply about poor decisions by an individual. If you have an aquarium full of fish and you notice a significant number of them are sick and dying the first thing you do is check the health of the water. You don't look at individual fish as the source of the problem. You look at the common denominator, the environment that they all share. Even a child who keeps an aquarium understands the wisdom of this.

In ten minutes you manage to answer a lot of questions I was having in my mind and more, I just find the part about how it works in the depenalise country a bit dry : Does they buy it in legal shop? Is it given by the state like in Switzerland inside special spaces for drugs addicted? (in my country France, you can have a substitute given to you by the state for some drugs). Until what point is it legal (as how much can one have on himself before it is consider too much...) Also a bit more number would have been better than focusing on one drug, like showing a chart with the estimate number of the most consumes drugs before and after the law. Thanks for the work nonetheless. (not my primary language sorry for the probable broken English)
@bcarvalho66611 ай бұрын
They but it from dealers, the main question here is that's a certain amount you can have in your possession that is legal and called for personal use, above that quantities is a crime and you go arrested for sure, so if you are caught selling is a crime e are get caught buying a small quantity for personal use you are directed to a team of health professionals to try to help you out (the problem about addiction recovery is the must want to change and be helped and that's sometimes a problem). Teams in the streets give methadone for control privation synthoms, or hangovers, that does not make them clean, just make them safer and healthier, also there's teams and places that gives seringes, that grab used ones from using spots. The problem with some drugs are that they are a gateway for another big problem in Portugal that is alcohol, that's a powerful drug that's completely legal, and not very much controlled. So total legalization could be a good measure, but we have to do it slowly. The decriminalization was a huge win and a shift, users and seen as sick people because addiction is a disease. That's makes them human. Proud of my country in this matter. The Philipine way is pure insanity. Proudly in recovery now, but as I said my only drug was alcohol.

The number on junkies got smaller and smaller!! All drugs exist in Portugal! Actually Portugal is the entrance for many cocaine that goes to all Europe! Crime existes!! But the truth many portuguese from My generation had uncles neighbours full heroin addicted and that reality changed!!! We treat our junkies and that's the way!!!
