You are still Jewish (this maternal inheritance is not really Jewish, as many Jewish men in the Torah had kids from non-Jewish mothers and were still considered Jewish!). You can easily go to any reformed Synagogue and learn. I'm Jewish on both side, but never went to Hebrew school (I'm from USSR, where it was illegal to be religious). I had to hide my identity, only this year I've attended worship and started learning very intensely about my culture and beliefs. It's never too late. We are Jews! 💙✡️

I’m sort of in the same boat but different. Mother is Ethiopian/Eritrean Orthodox Christian. My fathers side is Ethiopian Jewish descent. Found out in 2018 and was excited but became subsequently dormant, till about a year ago and the longing amplified last few months. Learning as much as possible from people like this KZbinr. thank you for making this! as someone just starting to explore Judaism, I have been wondering about this myself. And I love your videos so as soon as I saw the title I clicked haha. I have definitely been praying a lot the past couple of days too! I think my desire for prayer these past few days has been less out of a desire to influence the outcome of the election, because I know that beyond filling out my ballot, it is out of my control. But because I was feeling helpless, I wanted to remind myself that whatever happens is part of G-d's plan, and praying and reminding myself that it is all part of something bigger and that G-d will be my strength no matter what happens gave me some comfort.

I really like that you mentioned bad thing happening to good people. Praying to g-d for me gives me the strength to pass through the moment rather than getting rid of the moment all together. Marion, I agree with your belief that you can feel G-d’s presence and/or feel that G-d is with you. I also feel that. And I can also relate to not being able to fully understand everything that is spoken in the Shul. I also do not speak or understand Hebrew fluently, but my heart and soul can understand. I am often brought to tears because it moves me so much. I, too, am praying for a much more kind and just leadership once this election is over. Thank you for this video. Prayer has guided me through so much in life. One thing I've learned over the years is that there is a big difference between a prayer answered and a wish granted. G-d doesn't necessarily grant our wishes, but He always answers our prayers if we listen to what He has to say (or doesn't say). And I love how much Jewish prayer focuses on thanking and appreciating G-d. I also find the Psalms very emotionally moving, and for some reason, the Birkot Hashachar morning prayers really speak to me, even though they are not the most central. I will say that for anyone who can't read biblical Hebrew, the investment of time is well worth it. Being able to read Hebrew prayers out loud gives me a deep, almost meditative connection to G-d, our traditions, and the entire global Jewish community in a way that an English translation can't.

A perfect video, at the perfect time. I am a transplanted New Yorker, now in NC. Temple is far. I stumbled upon you and you are terrific! I enjoy your videos very much. I have 4 sons. Only 1 left at home. I always remind myself to pray ceaselessly. I lost my mother at 8 years old. I read that book when I was young, very impressive it is still recommended. In our house we have always believed in the Grandma's, my mother, grandmother and MIL as a group. They watch over us and have sent many many signs, to us all, that they are indeed watching over me and my children. It is very comforting to us all. Thank you for putting familiar things in my day. So I’ve recently been thinking about my religion and yesterday I realized that Judaism might be perfect for me but i wasn’t sure, and in ELA today I hade to make a slide of one vocabulary word and write the definition and such. I love how you do have that conscious awareness that G-d is with you. I have it too, to me it’s beautiful. Prayer to me is a way of connecting with G-d, to honor time with him. Very interesting video Marion! I am Christian and Catholic, and one thing I know that prayer in the Christian faith is a very fundamental part of daily individual life. One main reason for this is to create a relationship with the creator up above. In my daily life, I usually like to pray for a good day and that I may have everything I need. I really liked the part of the video in which that there are certain things that are so personal that you can only share them with the one up above. One thing I do know, is that G-d knows our heart and our thoughts and yes, bad things happen to good people a whole lot in this world. This does not mean that G-d does not love us. I know that when even bad things happen to me in particular times of my life, I know that G-d is good and comforting and G-d will be there to provide me with love and comfort since I know he is a G-d of love and comfort. You are such a beautiful human being with such a beautiful mind and heart Marion and I will be praying for you for peace, happiness and comfort in your life. Wonderful, wonderful video Marion!

I was so sad and tearful Tuesday night that I asked someone close to me if there was anything beyond despair or despondency that is not death. LOL. I have been quietly in pain and praying. I need the connection to God, the community of those who pray, and I know that prayer changes me, as much as anything else it accomplishes. I cope better. My responses become more aligned with what is needed to go on doing God's work in the world, bent yet not uprooted by the prevailing winds. The Psalms are so crucial to centering oneself spiritually. It's like finding your North Star or center of gravity. I was with a man who was grievously wounded on the streets of a big city once and I stayed with him and tried to keep him alert until the EMTs arrived. I didn't want to keep asking him his name and address to be sure he was really connecting with me. So, he was black and I took a chance that he would know Psalm 23 and he did and we said it together and then other psalms. I told him to lip sync the words and not actually waste his breath or energy, but still say it with me in the silent movement of his lips. He did. It was such a gift that we shared that common faith heritage through the Hebrew Scripture that something both focusing and comforting could be done for him while we waited. With either outcome, we are all praying as to how we pick ourselves up and move forward together from a place of love and a hope of understanding, rather than rancor, hatred.

@@tstieber He did. I stayed with him in the ambulance to the hospital and waited until his family got there. I promised I would not leave him alone. Not that with all the cops and EMTs he was alone. He was able to stay focused on my face and move his lips, so he stayed alert, though weak.

Love what you said about prayer changing you. In Jewish prayer, I learned that the purpose of prayer is to change ourselves, not to get what we want. That it's for our benefit, which really resonates. Also, when we pray for others, we are changing ourselves.

We tend to turn God into Santa Claus and prayer into magic wands to alter things to how we want them to be. It's not like that. Our society, most cultures, tend to warp our views of God, prayer, and community to the immediate and then just convenient group needs, wants.

Really great. We have much in common. Conservative Judaism, Ina, meditation... We used Sim Shalom for years. I woukd love to add K Jewish meditation to my practice. I really love your comments about feeling uplifted about singing a prayer without knowing the exact words But we found that the melodies differ in different Shuls.

Thank you! Did you ever try to compare your Siddur with the Orthodox Siddur? I wonder, how much it is different in the volume of the prayers. Do you have the Amida, Shma, Ashrei, Ishtabah etc.? Do you pray every morning? Sorry for asking, I'm just trying to find my way in the Jewish denominations and on one hand feel that the Orthodox way is too strict for me, but on the other suspect that the Conservative is too lenient. In our conversion class the rabbi taught us that prayer should be treated as a way for us to ask G-d to help give us strength, courage, knowledge, and determination during hard times, not as way to ask G-d to perform miraculous miracles for us. I think that if we put too much faith and reliance on prayer it can cause us to turn away from G-d when the situation inevitably isn't miraculously resolved as we learned in our class that G-d no longer interferes in human affairs as he did during Biblical times, for example.

I just expressed the same thought above and agree with it so much. There's a big difference between a prayer answered and a wish granted. We can't expect G-d to change situations because we somehow feel we've earned favors from Him. But he will always, always give us an answer, even if it's not a direct answer. He has yet to steer me wrong.

I love the content of your prayers. Especially the praying for strength part. I am not a believer in God. I’m going through a spiritual journey right now. I went from being born into Reform Judaism to becoming Christian, then fundamentalist Christian, then agnostic and now I’m not sure. I believe there’s some kind of force that exists but I KNOW It’s not the Christian god/godhead. I’m struggling with Judaism’s god because it seems so vengeful. My daughter is getting into Judaism and I’m enjoying tagging along, but I’m not sure how to reconcile that

Hi Marion this question is unfortunately not relating to the video but. I was wondering do Jews ex-communicate members of the Congregation who maybe due to unforseen circumstances actually did something that wasn't kosher. Like maybe ate food and didn't realise that what they were eating was not kosher like maybe a restaurant added dairy with meat but it wasn't obvious that it had it in.

They do not! You'll find Jewish people follow different paths in terms of keeping kosher but that's not a prerequisite for belonging to a synagogue community. I would say there are some very extreme communities that are ultra religious that if you're part of the community you would follow those rules but that's the exception more than the rule.

I think the whole world needs prayer now. I have not been praying for the election because I think what is done has already been done. It just needs to be revealed to us. But I have been praying a lot about the virus. That is something that we can change. That story is still unfolding.

Please, understand you are giving the perspective of the Conservative movement and not for all Jews. I've found in your videos you give some very helpful information but you also should keep in mind that you're not a halachic authority. You're a very young lady who is living your version of Judaism. That being said, I appreciate what you do, but when you put yourself out as being Jewish you should not disparage other Jews for their beliefs. All Yidden should work harder on that, including myself. Nothing in in life is random. Everything is from Hashem and it is all for the good. Though we may not see it at the time, looking back it should be clear. Praying gives us the connection and relationship with G-d who wants our closeness. So things may not be how we want them but they are how G-d wants them. He is infinitely smarter than I am.

I appreciate that perspective and yes I am definitely representing my personal beliefs on Judaism and sharing my authentic life experience as a real Jewish mom. Aside from that though I really invite you to read Kushner’s book, I don’t believe everything is for the best or that God controls everything - He gave us free will and we live in an imperfect world. I just don’t find that world view helpful to people who have really suffered when there really actually might not be a silver lining (Things like losing a child or other extreme events). I still appreciate that’s your view and one that gives you strength but the idea that Hashem controls everything is not Halacha.

@@MyJewishMommyLife I read that book back in my late teens, and understand how it can bring comfort to people. Perhaps learning the book of Iyov would give a better understanding of Hashgacha Pratis. I would recommend the sefer by Rabbi Shimon Schwab. It is very thorough and complete in dealing with when bad things happen to good people. His granddaughter Esther Wein has a series of audio classes she has done on the sefer that are amazing. Of course Hashem controls everything but that is not halacha. That is clearly stated in the Torah. Nothing is random.

We Jews believe Jesus existed but we don’t believe he is the Messiah, we don’t believe in the idea of the holy trinity. Jesus was Jewish and so is the Christian bible (at least portions of it: Old Testament which is the Torah, the psalms and the prophetic books. The New Testament was written afterwards and it’s about Jesus, that’s exclusive of Christians religions, therefore). So basically we share the same G-d and a few of the same books but the way we understand and employ the meaning of those things differ to that of Christians. It’s a whole different approach and therefore a whole different religion. But be fair it can even differ a lot between the Jewish movements (Ultra orthodox, modern orthodox, conservative, reform) and the same happen the Christian churches be it Catholic, presbiterian, Methodist etc. We also have different holidays because even tho the Jewish holidays appear in the Christian Bible the Christians will celebrate only the holidays that have to do with the history of Christ and neglect the ones that came before (even tho some very religious Christians do end up celebrating some of the Jewish holidays as well). Another main difference is the fact that Christians only have one book and that is the bible and us Jews have many liturgic books. These are only a few of the differences, I guess we are more different than alike and only have the same G-d and a part of the scriptures.

Thank you for this video! If you don’t mind answering, there is something I’ve always wondered about prayer. This election is actually a really great example; do Jews believe that individual and collective prayer could actually change the results of the election, or are there some things where it’s more prayers for strength and to get through it? I guess what I mean is that so often in life it’s something that’s already determined but we just don’t know it. Like, all the ballots are cast and we cannot change what’s written on them. I hope that made sense. Like if you fall and hurt your leg and are praying it’s not broken, is that within G-d’s power to hear and change between the fall and getting an X-ray at the ER? It seems to me that that must be determined already in the instant you fell...

I think you'll find a combination of both among Jewish people, there are definitely those who believe in a 'collective strength' and others who do not.
