I think it’s also due to the fact that nowadays we’re being bombarded with live services and monetized games. Back then with the PS3 we were used to get value for our money. A game was playable, from beginning to the end and there wasn’t so much temptation to start spending more money after buying a game. So yes, to me that was the real era of true gaming.
@salvo273 жыл бұрын
More or less,they charged up for monetization a lot in that era too especially the popular FIFA. The real truth is that it was less common and we weren't bombarded by remastereds/ports,loot boxes/battle passes,premium items and subscriptions to play online most of the games but still it was growing up during that era.For sure that was a better era for gaming than what we have now.

My PS3 wasn't working 3 years ago and instead of getting it repaired I just shelved it and continued to play the 360, Switch and now the PS5. Never sold my PS3 games because they hold a special place in my heart. There are so many great titles on the console. I even own titles that you can't get on PS online or remastered releases. A few weeks ago I decided to fix the PS3 myself. Didn't know whether it the dust, the fan or the disc laser (which could need replacing). I ordered a console security screw driver that can open the console up. It was an absolute mess. 12 years of collected dust. Oh boy I have not been good to by son. I eventually cleaned it. Top to bottom with WD-40, a mini vac, wet wipes, and finished it off with an air duster spray. Put it back together again and tested it out with Infamous 2. It worked and I honestly almost cried. Not just because I can play my PS3 games again but because I did it all myself. I got 56 PS3 physical titles awaiting me and I couldn't be happier.

It took Sony a while to get it down right though. I remember the first 3-4 years, Xbox live was a much smoother experience than PS3 online. I loved the PS3 because it truly felt like an all-in-one home console. The XMB UI was phenomenal. You could rip music straight to the drive, store movies on it, and of course, playing the games and Blu Ray. Looking at the PS4 and PS5, aside from obvious technical advancements, they’re lacking in comparison.

@cius963 жыл бұрын
@@GraveUypo lol, you're just delusional. I agree about the PS Store having an endless loading time (but it's not like on ps4 is ultra fast... it's still an issue somehow), but leaving that aside, well, PS3's XMB imho was absolutely great. And you could play music, dvds, blu ray, load and save all kind of media from usb stick, play ps1 and (with some fat models) ps2 games. It was just perfect. The only thing which would have made it even better would have been putting a 160 or even 320 gb HDD into the fat versions that read ps2 games (and fixing the ylod issue before launch) OR just making the slim 160 and 320 gb versions able to read ps2 games, since they aren't usually affected by ylod. My first console was the ps2, I liked it but two / three things stop me from wanting to play it again: the memory cards instead of a build in hdd (but that's a minor flaw), the WIRED controllers (yeah I know there are wireless unofficial controllers, but they're shit and break easily + you have to put batteries inside them and it sucks) and finally those original Dualshock 2 controllers often had issues if you wrapped the wire around them and some buttons got struck quite easily after years of usage. @tristanedwards73023 жыл бұрын
One of the main reasons PS3 was criticised though from the get go was that it was very expensive and there wasn't many high quality exclusive games in it's first year - the PS5 is superior in terms of having a better price point, some quality exclusives in Demon's Souls, Spiderman and Ratchet & Clank just 6 months out of the gate, and the PS5 also has some awesome controller innovations - Sony went back on the PS3 boomerang and quickly retooled basically a PS2 controller to have motion control, and at launch they had a lawsuit about rumble function in controllers, so the controller didn't even have that. Shortly after launch you started hearing about the difficulties of developing for the PS3 as well. A lot of cross console games were launching first or better on 360, and Sony lost a lot of their third party exclusives they had the previous generation such as Final Fantasy and Grand Theft Auto. PS3 easily stumbled out of the gate the most of any of the PlayStation consoles.

Same. I got into PlayStation because my grandpa had a PlayStation. It was so advanced for its time, compared to N64 or anything else I’ve ever experienced. Then I bought a PS2 using my own money from mowing the lawns around my neighborhood during the summer of 02’. Which prompted my grandpa to purchase his own PS2. Fast forward to PS3. It felt like I purchased a Mercedes when I picked up my PS3. While I did have some very fond memories on PS3; mostly multi player (online) games such as TTT2, SF4, Injustice, MK11, Killzone 2, Bad Company 2, Blk Ops 2 (zombies), COD4 Modern Warefare, BF3, GTA 5, Borderlands, Destiny, and LBP. It still pales in comparison to the single player / two player games that I played on PS1 & PS2; it had charm and a quirky yet, artistic arcade feel to it. The PS3 & the 7th Gen era was the commercialization stage of the gaming industry. It was no longer about an expression of art. It was all about the money, and how much of it can they milk out of you through DLC, micro transactions and endless sequels of the same game instead of creating new and original/unique IP’s. All of which made me check out in the 8th Gen and I highly doubt I’ll be entering the 9th Gen of gaming. Now, I literally only use my ps4 (which was given to me by my cousin who joined the military in late 2018) to play Tekken. And even then, I only play it once or twice a week, if that. Plus, the fighting game community such as Tekken is much larger on PC. So, eventually I won’t even have a console anymore. Anyways. Bring back the 90’s arcade vibe of the 6th Gen and perhaps more ppl will come back to gaming. Rant over.

I lived through it. There was a serious hate boner from the start because of "599 US DOLLARS". If it was $400 I guarantee 90% of the hate it got would've vanished. It was a bandwagon hate that took the world by storm. It was like a meme of it's time, every one had to loudly shout from the rooftops how much they hated Sony or call them "arrogant". All because of $599. I bought it at launch and loved it! Resistance, Warhawk, Motorstorm, Ratchet and Clank and Uncharted were amazing first year games. I was in high school and people would vomit on your face when you said you had a PS3 instead of Xbox 360 in 2007. Every gaming site articles and comments trashed the PS3 for years. Not until the 2009 $299 price drop and the Kevin Butler commercials did it even become socially acceptable to admit in public that you liked the PS3. Me and the few people I know who actually owned one in the first year loved the system from the start. It was also cheaper than 20gb 360 + $100 wifi add-on + $250 XBL fees for 5 years + $200 HD-DVD add-on (streaming TV/movies didn't exist back then) if you wanted HD movies for your sexy new HDTV you had to buy a disc player. In conclusion, people who weren't haters knew the PS3 and it's library ruled from the start and Xbox 360 was an amazing system as well.

Quick story...My best friend ended up getting a PS3 very early on after its release. He was pretty well off because his parents made good money. He was also the first person I knew to have a flat screen tv, which I believe at that time a 32 inch tv was around a $1000, so pretty expensive for the mid-2000s. We were both 22 at the time of the PS3's release so of course we had to get one. Anyways, I remember seeing it for the first time and was blown away. The clarity and quality of the picture was outstanding, the graphics were out of this world, and it played blu rays. Unfortunately, I had to wait until my birthday in August the next year to gather up enough money to get my own. At last, it happened, my very own PS3 (which I still own to this day). I still remember getting it out of the box and setting it up. The funniest part though, I tried to plug it into my old box tv. I plugged it in and couldnt figure out why the quality was so bad. I noticed this cord, which was called an HDMI, and I had no idea what it was or how you use it. I had to call my friend. Once he told me what an HDMI was, I had to convince my dad that I needed to get a flat screen tv in order to play my PS3. Anyways....It's funny how technology can help bring back all those amazing memories like the first time seeing and playing a PS3, and afterwards purchasing a PS3 and my first flat screen tv (which was a 26 inch btw). If anyone who reads this comment has a PS3 story, comment below, would love to read it!! Thanks for the video!!

I got my PS3 quite late in the day - a blue Super-Slim on December 17 2014, (I'd been Nintendo for over two decades; also have an MSX from the 1980s). What blew me away were the demos. El Shaddai was one of my favourites, but Ragnarok Odyssey Ace, Realms of Ancient War, and of course, Diablo III were all very memorable as well. My first PS3 game was the unforgettable 3D Dot Game Heroes. I also managed to play various PS1 titles I'd purchased earlier for emulators, (such as Armored Core and Magic Carpet), and finally got round to some PS2 classics - notably Disgaea and SMT Nocturne.

Got a PS3 but sold it to get a PS4 after a month of usage when the PS4 came out. Sold the PS4 and remembered wanting yo try out a couple games I could only play on the PS3. I got a RED Super Slim last year w/500gb and have been collecting games for about a year now. I’ve played through most Ratchet & Clank, AVATAR the movie one., SOCOM 4, just to name a few favorites. And I feel like a kid again everytime I connect it! I would recommend everybody to get the mClassic! It makes even my Xbox Series S look better! Just adds a bit of clarity, crispness, and upscales 720p to 1080p 60fps! I’m currently playing through God of War collection! If feels like I’m living @ another time when I play these older titles! Love it 🖤

(Re written comment because the original bugged out for some reason) WARNING, LONG STORY COMMENT. Firstly, what made me buy the PS3 in the first place. I remember watching the E3 live demo video for LittleBigPlanet (through a link on Weebles Stuff, didn't really know what YT was back then). When one of then grabbed onto the gear and it started turning, I knew I needed this game. I was 13 at the time and had about £100 saved up, no where near enough. I went to a local Scout group fundraiser, which had one of those horse race DVDs and people bet on them to win tokens. The money to buy tickets for the event went to the scout group and there was also a cash prize. Somehow I managed to pick the winners in the last two races and get the most tickets overall. The funny thing was is that my dad was a scout leader, and also worked in IT, so he set up the projector he borrowed from work and dealt with the technical side of things. In hindsight it looks a bit dodgy that I won lol but I literally had never seen this DVD before in my life, it had come from a different leader. That got me another £200 which was enough for the console. IIRC the cheapest PS3 at the time was like £240 for the 20GB model and £320 for the 80GB model (yup 80GB was the largest HD lol) or something like that. I distinctly remember when we took the cash out the ATM and walked across the walkway to the GAME opposite in Meadowhall I said to my dad "This is the most money I've ever held" (I've held much more since but 13 yo me thought that was crazy). I had the choice of three PS3 game bundles: The Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion, Ratchet & Clank: Tools of Destruction, and Midnight Club: Los Angeles (maybe there were other I can't remember). I picked the R&C title originally, but there was a known bug where it wouldn't work at first and you had to leave it overnight or something. I ended up trading it in anyway when we were at the shop the next day due to it not working, and got Oblivion instead. I actually timed getting the PS3 with the original release date of LittleBigPlanet, but it ended up being delayed a few days so I played Oblivion for a bit (no idea what I was doing). I distinctly remember fireworks going off around us as we drove home with LBP since it released on Bonfire night in the UK (5th November 2008), that was super neat. I got the spacesuit costume which could only be downloaded during the first week (or maybe it was re-released later I'm not sure) and remember the rocket car level that had like 100,000 plays (I think it got over a million plays eventually or something). I downloaded the R&C Tools of Destruction demo soon after and my goodness I played that every day after school for a month after; so much nostalgia for the first Metropolis level and it's music. The early days of PS3 were magical. I have so many fond memories of late gaming with my friends in the school holidays, mostly LBP, MAG and later Borderlands. Such a shame that the online for both MAG (back in 2014 the servers shut down, which literally makes the game unplayable since it was 100% online) and the LBP games are dead. LBP online was essentially killed in September last year by a hacker, which has destroyed the whole point of that amazing iconic Playstation3 series, to create and share. It makes me so sad because I literally bought a PS3 for those games and I recently have got back into PS3. Initially I went back through the R&C series (currently platting it) and wanted to do the same for LBP but it will never happen now sadly (although LBP3 is still online on PS4, which I don't have). I still have my original fat 80GB PS3 although that started being very tempermental and got the YLOD. It turns out it can be repaired generally by replacing some tantalum capacitors which lose capacitance over time. I didn't want to risk bricking my PS3 however so I managed to get a second hand 500GB slim for £45 on ebay, and copied my HD data over to the new one after eventually getting my old PS3 to turn on; will repair it some time in future. But I'm literally still using my original controllers and even micro USB leads and it all just works. I only had a modest PS3 collection, about 15 games but a few I played the heck out of (LBP and MAG mostly). I bought the R&C physical games last year so I had the whole PS3 collection (including the digital remastered deadlocked) and did an R&C marathon. Now I'm looking at the other remastered classic platformers which I haven't played yet but are always grouped together as classic Playstation platformers: Sly Cooper Collection and Jak and Daxter Collection. It's stange but I'm buying more PS3 games now than I did for years previously.

I wouldn't call PS3 retro just quite yet. An argument can certainly be made, but I don't know if we've advanced enough technologically for 7th gen to be considered retro yet.
@gustavojoserodriguez74753 жыл бұрын
How old is a retro console? Simplest: If it's over 10 years old, it's retro. If it has an official successor, it's retro even if the successor is new. When using nothing more than time and math, the 360 and PS3 have to be considered retro consoles by the end of this year. However, in the grand scheme of things, perhaps 15 years just doesn't feel as long as it used to, and we'll have to wait a while for mini versions of the seventh generation of console.
@007robotchicken3 жыл бұрын
@@gustavojoserodriguez7475 That's why I said it's up for debate. But personally, I go more by technology than number of years and the 7th gen consoles don't really feel all that outdated to me. PS3 was the era of chasing after the open world, shooter and gritty action trends. Everything tried to be GTA, Halo, CoD, Gears, Uncharted. Every melee action games suddenly had QTEs and tried to be God of War. Franchises like Fallout, X-COM, Syndicate became FPS. Devs of cartoonish games hard pivoted or gritty realism or sterile scifi. Even games like SSX pivoted towards gritty realism. Experimental mid-tier devs struggled to compete, and smaller experiments and one-offs from big publishers like Capcom started going away. It really wasn't that rosy. And there's tons of experimentation going on in the indie sphere today.

My reasons for wanting a PS3 in 2024: Nostalgia for older games from my teen years that I used to play on PC and that feel like they were much better than modern games; the desire to play them on my large TV; the fsct that if you het a well-preserved backwards compatible model, you can not only play PS3 and PS1 games, but most importantly also PS2 games, and if you combine that with a PS5, you also cover PS4 and PS5 games with only two consoles in your entertainment system.

The PS3 hardware was certainly "unique" for game console. Sadly, this made it more difficult to program for, but those who knew how to take advantage of the resources usually went on to sell some outstanding titles.

360 has better graphics, and its faster , not debatable, its a simple fact, I have both consoles, the Last of us is not that good of a game neither is GTurismo, quantic dream games are good ratchet, and hd colections are nice, all the rest multi platform titles are better on 360 .
@OrdinaryGP3 жыл бұрын
@@badtuber1654 you see that is where you are wrong. I own both and just because cross platform titles run worse doesn't mean it is weaker. Console hardware understanding was the issue, The Last of Us could not run close to the same on an Xbox 360, that game is a technical marvel

I dont have much time for gaming, but during the pandemic I played through The Last Of Us on PS3, and, being a PC gamer primarily. I was genuinely impressed by the graphics. Another point with the PS3 is the interface. Unlike the Xbox360 which I hear became very laggy with all the redesigns, the PS3 has had the same interface from day 1 and it just works. And it feels like there is a million settings to play around with. PS3 is basically a big multimedia hub that received all the streaming apps PLUS all the local offline media options. Its a great system to own even in 2021 as online is FREE and still working. PS3 games are dirt cheap to buy from a game store etc.
