Why Psychology is Always Political

The term "Mental Illness" is being used quite frequently today, but is it really what we think it is? Does it really reflect a sort of... sickness of the mind? Or is it really just a label used for other purposes? In this video I attempt to tackle this question in an admittedly provocative and straight forward way.

This is just the same thing I was thinking about. At work, I know my boss wants something from me, something not work related. So I ignored him and not smile at him. Then I received an email requiring me to answer mental health stuff. 😂 And had coaching sessions for "bad attitude" as they cannot make me seem autistic.

Ive never done therapy, i just lie and say i do, so anytime i pop off i can say my therapist lets me, then weirdly everyone accepts it

I think there's been a tendency to outcast certain mental illnesses, right now specially antisocial personality disorder and npd whereas bpd is also "stigmatized" but gets a bit more sympathy in general. I understand why since apd and npd technically don't have the capacity to feel empathy (tho I know is a spectrum and not very understood), nobody wants to be manipulated even when manipulation is not exclusive of people with personality disorders or used as a tool. But the lack of empathy sets them apart from the group of "us". I don't remember the statistics but I think there's a small percentage of people with these conditions that actually engage in criminal activities, and I honestly find it horrible how I've seen psychologists saying the only solution nowadays for narcissistic and apd folks is to make them go crazy so they are no longer a danger for others. And I get it, lack of empathy can make someone do horrible things to others, but I don't think any mental condition should be dehumanized in such way. I don't know if I missed the point of the video, srry. Honestly I think there should be more research on trying to help people with any condition instead of just segregating them. I actually do think npd and apd are pathologic and that a society that tolerated such parameters wouldn't be the solution or a very nice place to live in tho. Your accent makes me a bit curious, where is it from? Lol

Well the point of the video is that most psychological disorders are called illnesses not because they really make the patient ill in some way, but because they make people act in ways that society doesn't like. There are exceptions like schizophrenia but for the most part I think that's valid. Also, my accent is weird cause I am from Greece.

@@eliassideas I think Bipolar or Borderline is another exception. The instability and sporadic 'pleasure' spending that bipolar characterizes is a real problem. The hypocritical stance on violence is another problem.
