There is contracts with land owners near the border already made to build/train to build fortifications. Every road from the border has a plan made on what bridges and roads will be destroyed or put a mine field on. Every bridge has a built in place for explosives to break it as efficiently as possible. Military has contacts with companies that they will come to ade on building fortifications, use their trucks to move military equipment, convert factories to produce military equipment etc. There is even a plan for civilian ATV:s, snowmobiles, dirt bikes and off-road capable vehicles that military can take to be used in a case of war. Yes. This country is built and planned to be protected with any costs and to be ready as fast as possible.

There was a media press conference where the media (foreign) interviewed Finnish and Swedish army officers. One foreign journalist asked how they could communicate when the Finnish language isn't even in the same "language tree" as Swedish and is so different. Finnish officer : (looked at the Swedish officer) and said in English " how do you think we can manage?" and the Swedish officer replied, " I have no idea".

Well, I mean, every time Russia tries to invade Finland, some crazy Fin goes and kills an inordinate number of Russian troops. There's a joke about this based on a true story. A large group of Russian soldiers in the border area in 1939 are moving down a road when they hear a voice call from behind a small hill: "One Finnish soldier is better than ten Russian". The Russian commander quickly orders 10 of his best men over the hill where Upon a gun-battle breaks out and continues for a few minutes, then silence. The voice once again calls out: "One Finn is better than one hundred Russian." Furious, the Russian commander sends his next best 100 troops over the hill and instantly a huge gun fight commences. After 10 minutes of battle, again Silence. The calm Finnish voice calls out again: "One Finn is better than one thousand Russians!" The enraged Russian commander musters 1000 fighters and sends them to the other side of the hill. Rifle fire, machine guns, grenades, rockets and cannon fire ring out as a terrible battle is fought... Then silence. Eventually one badly wounded Russian fighter crawls back over the hill and with his dying words tells his commander, "Don't send any more men...it's a trap. There's two of them."

One thing worthy of note is that the Winter War was an absolute catastrophe for Russia, and is the main reason Finland was not annexed in 1939. The Russian military then was as incompetent and badly led as it is now, in Ukraine. They advanced along roads (because the forests were impassable to their vehicles) and, just like in Ukraine, the Finns were highly mobile (they used ski troops a lot) and were able to target the long Russian columns wherever and whenever they chose. They also let Russian columns cross frozen Finnish lakes, and then dynamited the ice, sending thousands of Russian troops to a watery, frigid grave. In the air Finland used whatever it could get - most notably the despised (elsewhere) Brewster B239 Buffalo to devastating effect, tearing the Red Air Force to shreds. In the end, Russia "won" by sheer weight of numbers. It was the kind of victory that can only be won by a side that doesn't care how many of its soldiers die, and that's what happened. But Finland gave Stalin such a bloody nose that he abandoned plans to take the country and settled instead for some small slices of border territory.

Correct me if I'm wrong but didn't the winter war result in the Moscow treaty which saw Finland ceding up to 9% of its land to the Soviets? I don't know all the details of that war but it doesn't seem like it was a complete catastrophe if Russia gained land. I did hear though that Stalin had purged the best military leadership.

Just before Covid my wife was in Finland visiting her family and got lost on the drive from Helskinki to Kuopio. She took a wrong turn, then another and ended up in a complex of underground tunnels leading to a bunker the size of a sports stadium. She was lost within the tunnel/bunker network for about 30 minutes and had to be rescued by a perplexed police unit.

Has Finland considered bolstering its defense by stockpiling vodka all along its border with Russia? With the level of discipline shown by the Russian Army in Ukraine, its advancing columns would stop at every vodka cache and take days to sober up before advancing to the next cache, giving Finland ample time to mobilize. As a Finnish artillery officer conscript (Chief of a Fireline Company), I approve very much of this video. Our artillery is the most capable of all armies in the world. And we do have these bunkers everywhere in this country. Every apartment building has one (by law), and there are tens of the larger bunkers in every city, small and big. I've been in several of them here in Tampere, the third biggest city in Finland. They are massive caves, usually used as a parking lot, one as a swimming hall, hobby/sport centers or just rental storages, locked off-limits storages for military and such.

@@disappointedenglishman98 most of the larger bunkers are either under ground or build inside a baserock hills. They are mandatory to have a functioning air filtration system and other protective built-in systems to protect from radioactive fallout. Even the older apartment buildings built in the 40s and 50s have a design for closing all the ventilation lines for this reason. I live in 50s apartment building with my wife and son, and we have an evacuation shelter in the basement which is currently used as a bicycle storage for the residents. We have the massive blast door stored there as well, with all the heavy steel ventilation lids. Obviously no shelter will protect anyone from a nuclear detonation happening close by, but they can be used quickly if needed.

The other key point is geography. Despite their long border with Russia, the gnarly terrain means that there are very few viable invasion routes. Finland has had 70 years to fortify these routes and turn them into killing-zones. Any Russian columns attempting to push along these roads would be obliterated. Last time they tried they lost 160,000 men...

Finland is extremely innovative, just like Sweden. A lot of high tech comes from Finland (and Sweden, often cooperation). However Finns are also shy and humble, and so nobody knows our full capabilities.

Do you actually think any government cares primarily for its citizens? Finland has the largest government per capita out of any Western countries, and the government is mainly for the government, sadly. It's not all that bright and happy in Finland, we're not a paradise, just a country that's been well governed until around 2000. After 2000... well, that's another story altogether. In terms of military, there is one huge failure: mines. The worst president of all times, Tarja Halonen, decided to disband all mines. I don't think anyone has ever died because of a mine in Finland after the 2nd WW, which makes this decision an absurd one. Of course, there is the fact that our president was most likely an agent for the USSR/East Germarny in the 70's and 80's...

In Sweden, we have great admiration for how the Finns fought during these wars. Many Swedes volunteered to help Finland and afaik there was material aid as well. Don't know if I would say that Finland lost the wars, they definitely didn't have the most losses.

Yes but we officially have equipment to arm only those 280000 soldiers. The rest ~620000 are spare parts for the green machine, although some units could be set up, but only for guard duties with light equipment.

Eh, you even forgot to mention some of the really important parts that help defend Finland: 1. The terrain, other than a not that wide strip by the coast, the border between Finland and Russia is heavily forested, trying to bring any significant forces down from there is impossible, and the borders to Sweden and Norway are mainly across major river (Sweden) or open expanse in far out beyond the middle of nowhere (Norway), so blitz offensives are decidedly difficult. 2. All of the bridges and tunnels in Finland that have been built since the WW2 have a mandated prepared location fro demolition charges, the location of which on each is held by the army, so if there is an attack, all the bridges and overpasses on all roads and railways leading further into Finland will be blown up in short order. 3. The coast is rocky, and coastal artillery guards all major waterways in and around the islands off the coast. Most missile and rocket launchers Finland has are also placed in the coastal artillery, so it's not just fixed emplacements that can be blown out in an anticipatory first strike. Also, yeah, Finland has 700 howitzers in use, true. And god knows how many more older models stored in huge vaults drilled into bedrock situated all around Finland. I personally know people who have visited one of these places where they saw old field guns stacked on top of each other filling a huge room the size of a football field or so. Not the most modern stuff, I agree, and it will take time to bring them out, but Finland isn't in the habit of ever throwing away military equipment that might still be used later if worst comes to worst. It all comes down to being always prepared for the worst possible outcome. Comes naturally due to our decidedly pessimistic national nature.

Few things to remember in most of these. Finland is basically on top of bedrock, so it's simple (though with more costs than maybe other places) to just cut into it to create bunkers. Also most of the bunkers that are for apartment blocks below them are usually used to give few square meters of storage space for all owners of the apartments. For example in our place it's a bike and maintenance utilities storage. There are requirements on how fast they need to be able to turn into shelters. Also we have national emergency supply agency. Their mission is to keep in storage things which we would need. In addition to normal fuel and grain, they are store for example medical supplies. Side effect was that our hospitals didn't run out of ppe in the beginning of the pandemic that seemed to be issue in many other places. So our defensive plans aren't just bunkers and military. Edit: Just to add not all the bunkers built are designed to be suitable shelters from nuclear attack.

Other countries rely on nuclear deterrence first while that simply wasn't an option for Finland due to the treaties forced upon it by the soviet union. Finland has always been stuck in Russia's geopolitical shadow but now it can rely on outside support it can be protected under the deterrence umbrella that other countries have, much like the baltics. The last and most important point that you forgot to mention is geography. Finland is effectively a Citadel, all approaches from East is covered with thick forests and lakes. South is covered by water. West is covered by water and a wasteland, North is covered by a wasteland and has nothing of importance, everything important is in the extreme south of the country. Any attacking force would be seen coming far away. Any attacking force would have to deal with light infantry armed to the teeth with modern western weaponry, hiding in near impenetrable forests using camouflage techniques that block even thermal imaging devices and would have to contend with a populace that is ready to fight to the bloody end. Attacking Finland would be a near impossibility for a NATO force. It is actually impossible for Russians. Only reason we want to join NATO is that cruise missiles and artillery strikes hitting our apartment buildings and civilian population is something we want to avoid. We are not afraid of losing our independence (Because that is literally impossible), we are afraid of pointless death and stagnation of our economy due to war.

Most larger residential buildings, parking garages, offices, etc. have "Skyddsrum", which are thick-walled, steel-reinforced underground bunkers. The 900,000 reserve army is the real deal, I'm one of the reservists: a tough US style bootcamp followed by a period of specialization, a minimum of 6 months, followed by refresher training throughout life. I could take up arms tomorrow if needed, I still remember the training very well. With a category called 'extra reserves', the last to be mobilized, and volunteers, the total wartime army potential is around a million strong. Btw, what wasn't mentioned is that Finland has more tanks than other Nordic countries combined, as well as 120+ modern fighter jets (F-18s + F-35s that were recently purchased).

Very well maintained. Also at the hospital I work. Almost the whole area has underground two storey under, when you there you can't think I'm down there, very nice. Sweden has also very similar building-bunker regulations and within nearly all settlements or towns/ cities in Sweden you’re going to see triangular signs which show you where the nearest public bunker is. But you haven’t prepared with food. In the beginning of corona lockdowns, you Swedes realised that your storages only have food for days or up to one or two weeks. We have food and other supplies for months and we even have a company for maintaining these storages. The storages also include diesel and gas, medication and other equipment.

One other important aspect is the unique geology of Finland. Whilst russia certainly has some military equipment that can operate in Finland. Finish military has a big homeadvantage with Norwegian tanks able to operate in the climate and an army set up to beat a larger foe with guerilla tactics in the vast finish forests.

Well that underground bunkers are mandatory for every house/building inn Switzerland as well. They have strict rules about how many should be living under the roof as those many bunkers/bunk beds have to be already built. This bunkers are part of structural design to be submitted to the municipality.

Well honestly speaking, I think biggest defense Finland has, is it's people. Most Finnish are willing to defend their homes and relatives, literally to last breath if need be. War with Finland means, that matter that you win or loose depends on how much carnage you are willing to be responssible of, because most Finns, young or old will not bend that easily, infact if attrocities that happen in Ukraine now would happen here, it only would make us even more determined to keep on fighting. We take saying "What doesn't kill you, makes you stronger" quite literally

It ought to be pointed out that Sweden also used to have one of the most extensive civil population defense systems in the world, during the Cold War. Only thing is we scrapped it after 1991.

A good amount of Swedish volunteers did fight for Finland in the Winter War, but otherwise it has been too long for Sweden since the last war, so the Swedes have forgotten the horrors of war. In fact, as a nation, Sweden hasn't fought a single modern war, apart from in a very limited sense, such as in Afghanistan. Whereas in Finland every graveyard that was in use during the WW2 has rows of tombstones for the fallen war heroes. They persist as a grim reminder of Finland's geopolitical location. Never forget.

You are missing an important point: Finland is almost completely covered by forests, at least the areas were trees can grow and most of the population and infrastructure is. Finnish soldiers could move, attack and withdraw undetected. That's how they kicked Russia's ass in the Winter War.

Surprised you didn't mention the road network. It's designed to make east/west travel actually more difficult (most big roads form a V shape), the overpasses and bridges are made to be easy to collapse and block major highways, and no large roads are close to the coast (to prevent a landing that way from bypassing the impassable roads) with the exception of Helsinki and Turkku. Speaking of naval landings.... good luck with that! The Finnish coastline is a maze of small islands and has few navigable passes to the shore. A few hundred soldiers + rockets could camp out for weeks on those islands and block any pass large enough to get transports through, or just good old sea mines.

In my Finnish middle school our arts and crafts classroom was a functional bomb shelter with like quarter meter thick walls and metal hatches on windows. This was in a little village with a population of about 200-300.

And the most important thing is that Finnish weapons are under the ground even fighters. I have visited one very big cave near Rovaniemi, which was full of weapons and equipment. It took 2 weeks to get a permit to enter that cave, but i got it because i had to work there few days. Russian missiles cant take Finland down and its pretty impressive.

Someone naive. The USSR and America have long had no special bunkers and plans for bomb shelters for the population. For a simple reason, if there is a nuclear war, no one in the cities will survive and there is no way to save people. This is nonsense in any city during rush hour traffic jams are not crowded. How can you evacuate the city's population in 3-6 minutes? This is nonsense, those who managed to escape from the explosion in the bunker of food and water supplies there for a month at most. But the radiation there will not evaporate in a month, look at Chernobyl still founds. That is, even those who escaped in the bunker will die either from radiation or from hunger and cold.

Though in the story, it's in America and the vaults were ran by non-governmental corporation, selecting those that lived or died and then subjected the inhabitants to experimentation.... When I was last week in army, our colonel said: "We have talk about enemy x or "green nation" for last months. But lets be real here. You all know that our only possible enemy would be Russia. Finland doesn't have best or biggest army. But we have best army in the world to defdnd against russia". We have build our whole military against one enemy and thats why Russia would have really hard time if they tried to invade us again.
