Why Qui-Gon Jinn Didn't Wear a Padawan Braid

Qui-Gon Jinn doesn’t have a Padawan braid in Tales of the Jedi, despite the fact that he holds the rank of Padawan. What gives? Why does he get to break the rules? The High Republic books have said that Jedi Masters could decide whether or not their Padawans had to wear a braid to signify their rank. It was not a requirement. Dooku was raised at the tail end of the High Republic era, so it’s possible Yoda didn’t require him to wear a braid. Or maybe Yoda did, and Dooku thought when he had a Padawan, he wouldn’t make them do anything. Like a rebellious child. And let’s face it, Dooku and Qui-Gon weren’t known for adhering to the traditions of the Jedi Order. Even without the precedent set by the High Republic, I think Dooku would have been the kind of Jedi to shirk some of the Order’s traditions, and Qui-Gon’s lack of a braid is likely a symbol of exactly that.

Makes more sense why obi wan wore one and made anakin wear one if you see Obi Wan’s need to “go by the book” in the master and apprentice novel. Qui gon probably didn’t even make Obi Wan do that but he probably just wanted to wear one anyways.

@@MegaMyown he did feel the need to strictly follow the way Jedi way as he got older, a big struggle he had was following qui gon’s more unorthodox orders. Qui gon just taught him to chill more. Can’t find the quote but there was a line where qui gon told obi wan something like the way he can be the best apprentice is by not being so strict. I really can’t explain it that well. But yeah I think after qui gon died he didn’t have that voice to tell him to chill out so he must’ve really went hard with the rules after his death.

@@mario-k. Thats the thing though: Qui-Gon said that Obi-Wan was ready for the Knighthood Trials. Obi-Wan's biggest issue was the fact he wasn't ready to be a Master yet. He essentially went from Padawan to Master that quickly. He was far from ready to train Anakin and it would've probably been better for Anakin had Yaddle or Plo Koon or Shaak Ti trained him.

In the prequel novels it's explained its not a rule but a custom adopted by some Padawan's (not all) to signify their move from youngling to padawan status. This makes more sense given some races couldn't have a braid even if they wanted too (Torgruta's like Asokha, Twi'leks like Ayala Secura etc)

Obi-Wan was almost too old before Qui-Gon took him on as a padawan. He would've been so relieved at having made it that the braid would be a symbol that he'd made it. It would've been the same for Ahsoka, who had to prove that Yoda was right to give her the rank early. Also, since Obi-Wan started late and became a master to Anakin before he was ready for it, it explains why he was so unprepared in certain areas to teach Anakin.

We need more episodes with them. I know they fleshed out much with the little they did provide, but I’d love a 30 minute full season starting with Yoda and Dooku then moving to Dooku and Qui-Gon.

You know, I saw that, thought about it for one second and then thought, "Yeah but it doesn't really matter." I'm reminded of Sha'a Gi who does have the braid, but then also has basically the same hair as Qui-Gon here, and I think that's actually more distracting because his hair should look more like Obi-Wan and Anakin's when they were Padawans. You can argue that he had been in battle for some time, he just never got around to getting a haircut or shaving, it's all just to have a fun Shaggy lookalike cameo in the Clone Wars Microseries, and I love him, but he's problematic to the lore side of my brain whereas Qui-Gon looking like this is no issue at all, and it's probably because he breaks every convention (the short hair, pony tail, and braid) than adhering to only one or two things.

That episode fundamentally changed Dooku's lore. We know that Dooku became a sith AFTER Qui Gon's death at the hands of Maul. Which is when he searched for the sith, to destroy them.

I’d love to see a season 2 of tales of the Jedi tbh There’s so much they could do like give us a story with Qui gon and Obi wan before the events of tpm in fact actually show us how Obi wan met satine, I know that’s in a comic but we should definitely see that on screen Maybe a mission with Obi wan and Anakin set a bit before the events of aotc In fact who’s to say this all has to be prequel focused give us something in the original trilogy timeframe as well

It’s noted in master and apprentice I believe that yoda paried qui gon and obi wan partially because as obi wan had been a rebellious youth himself that in order to curb he put the top together as the only way for obi wan to rebel against qui gon was to become a model Jedi

I just assumed he wasn't a Padawan anymore. Does it actually say he is a Padawan during the episode? I know Dooku calls him that but I assumed that was just an affectionate thing, especially since timeline-wise it doesn't seem to make sense (assuming the eps are in chronological order, which also might be a wrong assumption on my part).

Thus could be it, but I feel Qui Gon presented himself in such a manner than he wasn't seen as immature like a padawan. He could pass off as a true knight with his knowledge and compassion.
