They didn't meet NHTSA CAFE from factory cause Japan never wanted them sold here in the first place and didn't pay for the testing or provide the cars. They have to crash 10 cars, that never happened. If the car isn't factory equipped, not retrofit it won't pass CAFE standards. The NHTSA they have to meet now is nothing to do with CAFE standards, just sayin.

I had a 94 R33 GTS4 that I owned when I lived in Italy and had planned to have imported before motorex went under. After they went under the NHTSA changed the rules that only R33's 96-98 could be imported because only those years had driver and passenger airbags.. My argument was why does my 94 R33 need airbags when my 94 dodge colt and 94 Nissan pickup (both US spec) didn't have airbags either.. Sadly I had to sell the car for way less than I had in it because I couldn't import it..

Someone's putting a bad title up. Why are R34's illegal in america? Simple. They didn't meet safety/emissions standards mandated by the USA (Mostly emissions and LHD stuff), and Nissan didn't see a potential market in the USA, so they didn't spend the money they would need to spend to make it legal here. And that's not mentioning the 25-year law, essentially bought and paid for by Mercedes-Benz. Motorex has NOTHING to do with the reason why GT-Rs are illegal in the USA, they were simply an importer that tried to spit in the face of bad legislation, and got beat up because of it.

I read an article from like 2008 that went into great detail about the entire thing. So technically, Skylines WERE made legal in the United States. MotoRex basically created a compliance process which the federal D.O.T. agreed was acceptable. But of course, each car had to brought into compliance individually, and it was very expensive and very time consuming. The two main pillars of this process were crash safety and EPA certification. Since MotoRex was the sole company that devised the compliance process and got explicit approval from D.O.T., no other company had the details of the process and no other company could subcontract the work out to actually get brought into compliance. Only MotoRex knew exactly what was to be done. On paper, it made a lot of sense, but the management of MotoRex was problematic. The owner/operator was extremely shady, and by most accounts, not a "car guy". On top of blowing most of the company money on Japanese style "gentlemen clubs", he was known to have a terrible hard narcotics addiction, not show up to work, not delegate, overpromise, underdeliver and even lose track of client's cars. That's bad enough, but the demand for this service was super high given the massive cost and niche factor, so margins were already thin. Eventually, they got sloppier and sloppier to the point of falsifying documentation that the compliance process was even completed. Towards the end of MotoRex, cars were getting NO work done to bring them into compliance, whereas the first cars to go through MotoRex were. Once the federal government caught wind that MotoRex was no longer actually bringing Skyline's into compliance as per their original agreement, they essentially revoked the right for anyone to do so. Based on this, I would agree that MotoRex is directly responsible for the illegal status of Skylines in America before the 25 year exception.
@joemarchione97
@joemarchione97 5 жыл бұрын
@@raulferro3998 Up until the mid 1980s, it was perfectly legal to import any car into America. In the case of Mercedes-Benz, it was actually cheaper to import cars from Germany than to buy one from your local dealer, and often could be had with nicer options and equipment than for those sold stateside. This ate into profits, so Mercedes-Benz along with several other manufacturers petitioned the government to ban the import of vehicles not made for the US market. They used the excuse that these cars were not up to American standards (which was technically true, European and Asian market cars did not follow the same safety and emissions standards that we did, and we were often stricter, so other markets were more lax at the time). The government bought the scheme, and to this day, it's illegal to import and non-US market car into the US. A few exceptions have been made, the easiest is the 25 year exemption, where any car can be imported into the USA and driven like normal if it is 25 years or older. Other less common exceptions are the Show and Display rule, which allows a car to be imported into the USA at any time, as long as it is a car of significance (one popular example is Bill Gate's Porsche 959). There is actually a list of elligible cars (not just any car can come over under this rule) and it has to be restored or in like-new condition. These cars are often used as museum pieces or as a part of private collections. Only allowed 2500 road miles per year. The other exception is what MotoRex was doing, which was bringing cars into compliance for US street use. It basically requires importing multiples of the same car, as modifications and crash testing are necessary. For this reason, it is very very expensive and very very time consuming. Pretty much no one does it for that reason, and the most famous example of a company doing that ended in disaster (MotoRex). That's probably why MotoRex really never had any competition.

Paul Carmi sound angry there huh? The philosophy behind every fast and furious movie was dope, was meant to portray the car scene in a way it hasn’t been made obvious to the public and most regular people. However they then ruined EVERY SINGLE film beginning to end with the dumbass Hollywood effects. Like the propane tanks in the trunk with a full setup just to turn the exhaust into a flamethrower for movie effect? Stupid and unrealistic. That’s the shit that ruined this series for ANYONE who actually knows cars, still cool to see all the cars because they did choose a lot of the most presentable saught after cars of the era. I remember a specific R34 that was painted that “mystic” paint (it changes color in the light) that Ford offered on the Mustang Cobra’s from the late 90’s/ early 00’s, if I remember correctly, it was Hiro’s car and he had abandoned it.... I understand that dealerships have the right to be protected and so on but at the same time I don't agree with the 25 year rule in America and how mercedes Benz took away peoples constitutional right to buy any car anyone want as long as they can afford the payments or pay out right for a car or import a car they want, Lucky I live in Canada so we have the 15 year rule except for Quebec but dealerships are trying to change the 15 year rule to 25 here but it won't happen considering there's not enough a good reason to change the 15 year rule and also there sales hasn't decline to go out a business over a imported car. I'm not gonna let dealerships pay money to someone that works for the Canadian government to take away my constitutional right to buy/import my dream car, I already bought a new car last year and I'm not being limited to what car I can and can't have.

@og_halo5111
@og_halo5111 5 жыл бұрын
Well mainly because you can get there grey market cars so cheap in Japan depending on the vehicle with little to no rust on the chassis and the mileage are also low, so you can’t blame people in New Zealand for choosing grey market cars, idk anything about there importing laws there. My whole point about this is that people should have a right to choose which car to own and drive weather it’s a brand new car at a dealership, used car, or a grey market vehicle. I do think the importing law should be there to protect dealerships like the 15 year old here in Canada but nothing over like 25 year old which is over kill.
@7sins979
@7sins979 5 жыл бұрын
yea the rule makes no sense. for new cars it would be more expensive to have it imported so the only reason to import would be if the car is not available in dealers. for used the dealer probably isn't selling that car anyway and by that logic local private sale would be a far larger proble for them.
@oriongear2499
@oriongear2499 4 жыл бұрын

John Blackstone they aren’t “smuggled” they are imported to Canada legally after being 15 years old then registered and insured in Canada and driven down. You can actually drive an r34 LEGALLY in the USA by registering it under a business in Canada. Even registering it under an individual in Canada whose a Canada resident is an easy way to drive these cars mostly legally. And evo 5 exist in the USA right now legally, other even earliest are brought in through the same means, same with the s15 and many other cars. Not uncommon a practice at all, any jdm car guy knows this stuff.

So I'm sure I'll find the answer online, but as someone who doesn't know that much about importing cars to the US, this video never amswered the question of why the R34 is illegal. Why can't another company, or individual, just start modifying them like Motorex did to make them US-legal? Edit: On the Past Gas podcast he says exactly this. Anyone could test and modify the cars for import if they wanted (car availability aside). So the stock R34 was no more illegal after the fall of Motorex than it was before, just no one was modifying it anymore. So the only answers in the video to the actual question in the title of the video is some vague mentions of emissions standards, sweet.
