I noticed the same thing too when I was deep in Letterbox. Throughout the entire movie, I would just be crafting the quippy opening lines to my review. It got to a point where I wasn't even enjoying movies as entertainment anymore, they were moreso a means to an end.

I mean, it’s basically film Twitter. Everyone on there just fighting to craft the quirkiest one line review anymore.

Thx KZbin for recommending this lol... Good points and I respect your decision. For me any words to describe how one feels about a movie are way more important than just the star rating. It means almost nothing, also like you said it's impossible to bring like a low budget 50s monster movie and a modern blockbuster on one scale. However, I still like to rate as a small indicator how much I liked a movie overall. I think it's good for others to quickly see what I like, to get to know my taste and stuff. Also most of the times, I let the movie settle for a few days before I give a rating, just so I have a bit of distance and am not overly emotional, I think it works very well. :)

I completely agree! I stopped rating films over a year ago and even went through the 1000+ films I had logged and removed all the ratings. It was exhausting and impacted my enjoyment of the film in the first instance. Thanks for sharing

I’m happy that someone else went through the same thing I did! It really ruined my mindset and I think others need to re-evaluate and make sure they’re actually enjoying what they’re watching!

Great as a diary, terrible as a social media platform.

I see where they’re trying to push it as a social platform but it doesn’t work very well for it. I haven’t looked at followers / following in so long ‘cause I forgot it existed. 🤣

Honestly genuinely love following my friends on it though and seeing whatever cool shit they're watching on my feed, like I've discovered some really great movies that way. But overall I never use it as a social media platform really, and I don't really get why they're trying to push it like that when I've always kinda used it more like a blog where I share my thoughts on stuff I watch really.

I had the EXACT same experience as you. Not only that but the number of stars does not tell me anything anymore as for myself. I still like to see the average rating to have an idea of how the film has been received but as far as me giving it just does not work anymore. I look at the rating I just gave and be like, well, this could be one star lower or higher and it would not have made a difference. And just the fact that most times I just don't know what to rate.

I know this is easier said than done but I try not to overthink it and I don’t treat my ratings as set in stone.
@beardedfilmguy2 ай бұрын
That’s 100% true! There’s movies I don’t like today and love tomorrow - I think that’s also another issue though that people get stuck on their initial thought and go back into a film with whatever they thought before and that impacting their experience. If I watch a movie I don’t like that’s in my head going into it and that’s affecting my experience without me realizing it!

Haha I also have a thought about the rating I would give the movie around half way through, although for me personally I dont think its ruining my experience overall of watching movies. I just wish Letterboxd would let you turn off seeing the "average ratings" and other peoples reviews.

I have almost 2000 films logged and I wanna stop rating them but I feel like I'll have to erase all my previous rates and then I don't want to do it anymore hahaha nice video, keep it like that 🙏

I thought about it but I just moved on and as I re-watched things I would erase the rating! Thank you for watching, man! 🤘🏻

I used to be big on letterbox & then it just faded away. I haven't used it in awhile

It’s a nice platform that can be a ton of fun!

Happens the same to me while I watch a movie 😂 The solution is to give it time, because instant ratings never hold up

Such great advice. People rush to get their opinion out and haven’t even let the movie soak haha

Since I use mine just as a tracking everything gets a 5 star or nothing. If I enjoyed it and got anything from it it got 5 stars to let me know it was worth the watch. No review means it wasn’t for me and don’t want to put a one star bc at the end of the day it just wasn’t for me

Simply put, this is not what you told me. You stated that Letterbox had emailed to say you were banned for life because you wouldn't stop harassing users who had rated 'Lolita (1997)' demanding to be told if they knew whether there would be a sequel. You spent days on end just spamming people the same messages, and were reported for abuse.
