Helpful video. I used the NKJV for 21 years then switched to the ESV after becoming persuaded it is based on better manuscripts + because it's more widely used here in Australia than the NKJV or NASB. Really pleased with the ESV, and still consult the NKJV & NASB for sermon preparation.

@Van Guard thank you for saying "not all of them" LOL. You can read any Bible you want, in fact if I'm speaking to a new Christian and they have an NIV, I am jumping for joy just for the fact they are reading their Bible !! Are they getting a watered-down version? Yes most would agree to that. How am I going to know what sexual immorality is unless it's defined for me as fornication? A homosexual male can say, "yes but I'm married to my man and we as men love each other, so there's nothing "immoral" about it so we're good." Things like that are why I read the King James over the other ones. But if you're reading your Bible everyday and it's another version, or the New Testament only, or just the Gospel of John in any version... I tip my hat to you and praise God for it.

This video series has been a HUGE BLESSING to me! My current church teaches from NIV, which I can't get into because it's altered too much. I think we can handle literal translation into our vocabulary with some notes, and the Holy Spirit will minister to us. After months of sorting though translations, I like the ESV study bible for deeper study, NLT/NIV for casual reading at night, and KJV/NKJV for topic study :)

Once I discovered that the ESV uses the Dead Sea scrolls as part of its retinue of sources, and actually mentions the studies of Dr. Michael Heiser in reference to Psalm 82 and the “sons of God”, I felt even more assured it was where the Spirit wanted me to read from. In addition to that, the way it phrases passages is highly poetic.

Matthew, thank you so much for this. I just got back from my Disciple Bible study and was arguing with my wife that my version of the Bible (ESV) was better. What happened was we went around the room and everyone read passages from Jeremiah from their own Bibles. While I was following along, I was shocked at how may strange sounding versions there were. I was following along in my Study Bible app on my phone which is the ESV version. After all of the readings, I commented, "I realize now how many different versions there are." After class, I commented to my wife that I liked my version better and that those other versions do not seem or sound right to me. I've always been a stickler on translations mainly because I know that God's true meaning can be disguised or lost if the correct translation is not made. So, when we got home, we read the passages from our different versions line by line so we could compare verses. I pointed out all of the times when I felt the NIV translation was incorrect. Then, when I Googled information about the different translations, we read the history of several of them and they basically pointed to the fact the ESV was the most accurate. Some even made the point that some versions are actually the work of the devil trying to deceive any followers he can. Afterward, I saw your video and without watching it first, I called my wife in to watch it with me. Everything you said proved my point. I asked her "how do I know this." She just looked at me inquisitively and I said, "because God told me." Amen. I can tell by reading it that it is closer to God's true words without having to learn how to read the Bible in Greek or Hebrew. You've already done that work. Thank you.

Andy keep reading your Bible. Just keep reading and reading and reading and it'll start to make sense. Take what you hear from man with a grain of salt always. God's word has all the answers even if you don't see it today or next week. Just keep reading and asking the Holy Spirit to reveal his truth to you. And if things don't make sense sometimes perhaps the reason is because "both" are true. For instance, how can Jesus be 100% man, yet at the same time 100% God?. So that's tough to understand but the answer is "both" apply. He's both 100% man and he's 100% God. Just keep reading Andy it'll come. God bless you brother.

If I had been born 20 years later, I'd probably use the ESV as my regular reading bible. Alas, as a child growing up in the Roman Catholic Church, we had a Douay Rheims translation. In Catholic school, we used the awful RSV Common Bible until the Ecumenical RSV version of the late 1970s was released. By then, I began attending a Baptist Church where the called out page numbers from the old Scofield Reference Bible along with the scripture references. I was give an NASB bible in the early 1980s, but came to prefer the NKJV. I actually used the later edition of the RSV as a 3rd Bible for reading the Apocrypha. I really like the ESV, and have a few copies, including Concordia's The Lutheran Study Bible, but I use KJV Reformation Heritage Study Bible and the NKJV and updated Geneva Translations the most. I've been reading more and more Reformed authors again (your videos are part of the reason, plus R C Sproul and Joel Beeke books). Thanks for all the great videos, pastor.

@Van Guard let me please mention this since you brought up the deity of Christ. I attend a Reformed Church bible study on Thursday nights and in the little room where we have the men's study there's a poster on the wall with Isaiah 9:6. I noticed there is a comma missing after "wonderful." So it's wonderful counselor, and the rest of the verse in their ESV, rather than his name Shall be Called wonderful, AND counselor, AND the rest. You ask why is this important? For me at least It's a deity of Christ point. If you look back at the story of Samson's parents you'll see when they ask person who's been meeting with them, what is your name, the person says "wonderful" (New King James Version.) Manoa goes on to say that he believes he and his wife will die because they've seen God. Check out the story. It's a fascinating deity of Christ example that I love. I may be off base on this but one comma removed (or as someone might say 'not added later') is a big deal for me. Slowly but surely the deity of Christ is watered down or taken away in these modern versions. Catholics believe Christ is the Son of God. Nothing more nothing less. Scripture clearly teaches there's ONE God. Not one big God and one small God.
@garyg7549

@Van Guard Trinity? Who said anything about a trinity? What's a trinity? There's one God and only one God. The Trinity is an explanation for people who don't understand the nature of God. Here's a clue. There's one God. I'll let you go from there. Here's another clue read Isaiah 9:6. Then read John 14, and spend a little time on these verses... eight, nine, 17, 18. Seriously Verse 18 please. Now if you talk to a Roman Catholic they will say the Trinity yes, but they generally don't understand anything about the nature God at all. They believe God becomes a cookie and they eat the physical son of God. So you're going to trust them on the concept of God and a trinity? Roman Catholic will say Christ is the Son of God. Nothing more nothing less. Let me ask you, who do you say Jesus is? Seriously, that's a real question for you. The verses I gave above should help.

This is a great video... However there is a huge difference in literalness and accuracy... Also the ESV goes gender neutral in tone of areas in which they choose... In fact it is very inconsistent. John 3:18-21 is a great example of how the ESV is inconsistent. It switches back and forth from whoever and people (which is gender neutral) to (he and his) which is gender specific... One thing the NIV does is go with contextual consistency. I hope this helps some viewers that may misunderstand here. Thanks for your videos brother.

Pastor Matthew. Since you know some Greek I was wondering if you could give your opinion on how 1 John 5:19 should be translated? "And we know that we are of God, and the whole world lieth in wickedness." KJV "We know that we are from God, and the whole world lies in the power of the evil one." ESV Do you think the substantive adjective (Gk., tō ponērō) is referring a thing (wickedness) or to a being (the wicked one)? Those translators that opt for “a being” called “the wicked one” then add additional words to the verse to show how the world lies on the wicked one. They say it lies under “the power” or under “the sway” of the wicked one (NIV, NAS, NKJV). I was just wondering how you feel on the subject? Thanks.

The word "power of" is definitely not present in the Greek. Looking at it myself, my opinion is John could be referring to either a person, or evil in general. It's open to interpretation (meaning, there's ambiguity in this instance). One thing I've always said (but translators don't seem to honor) is that if there's ambiguity in the Greek, you should try to leave that SAME ambiguity in the English as well. I think if I were translating it, I would possibly say this: ".... the whole world lies in what _is_ evil." The word IS is in italics, because it's added. But with that, you can take it either to be a specific being/person/thing, or to be evil in general. That would parallel the ambiguity in the Greek pretty well. Hope that helps a little!

@@nunesandrew4198 reason I say that is if you could compare the authorized version with all the rest including the New World Translation of the Jehovah's Witnesses, you'll find that many of the phrases are the same in the Bibles I called Catholic Bibles because they all come from the same source. The authorized version or King James version comes from the manuscripts in Syria where as the Catholic Bibles ALL come from the manuscripts in Egypt. If you look them up please excuse my spelling this Sainatticus and the vaticanus from Wescott and Hort are the basis of all those new Bibles. All of them. Only the new King James uses the same manuscripts as the King James. I even carry around a Catholic Bible too so I can show my buddies at bible studies when they laugh at my rendering in my authorized version. They say it's a bad version of the Greek so I ask them the same question, why would you trust your Catholic Bible? Sir, I like studying from the ESV, I also use the NASB, and preach from the NIV. If you look at the line chart that gives the translations from formal equivalence to functional equivalence. ESV and NASB are both in the formal equivalence or word for word. NASB was published in 1971, and ESV was published in 2001

I don't think anyone really knows but the counter argument to "missing" verses is that contrary for appearances instead verses were "ADDED" to the body text of the KJV and other older translations by translators and/or printers ADDING/INSERTING what was originally footnotes and marginal notes into the body text. Which argument is right? Hard to tell decisively. This stuff happened or didn't happen before 1600.

The NRSV was supposed to be the updated revision of the RSV which the ESV claims that it is a revision of what is the story with that other than NRSV swung liberal in its gender inclusive language while ESV held the line and didn't follow the NRSV and the newer editions of the NIV off that same cliff. I wish Crossway made all the ESVs like the specialized version they made for Gideons International which has all of the "missing" verses included in the body text enclosed in brackets and notation in the preface that bracketed text isn't found in the what is supposed to be the older Greek texts. I think that would have been the most responsible way of handling the "missing" scriptures controversy.

The KJV uses these pronouns in order to distinguish between the second-person singular (thou, thee, thy, thine) and the second-person plural (ye, you, your, yours). The Greek and Hebrew make this distinction. Ex. And the Lord said, Simon, Simon, behold, Satan hath desired to have you, that he may sift YOU as wheat: 32 But I have prayed for THEE, that thy faith fail not: and when THOU art converted, strengthen THY brethren. or, Jesus saith unto HIM, THOU hast said: nevertheless I say unto YOU, Hereafter shall YE see the Son of man sitting on the right hand of power, and coming in the clouds of heaven.

The RSV is more traditional than its successor the NRSV. I think the latter is a fine scholarly translation and I don’t care for its recent update. That said, the ESV took the best of the KJV tradition and established itself as a translation conservative and evangelical Christians felt comfortable with and there’s always room for improvement in the future.

It's also refreshing for a pastor to actually acknowledge. I'd be interested to hear your thoughts on the CSB in relation to those of the series. Personally, I don't like the kjv tradition - it feels too traditional for me. But I absolutely understand the necessity for connecting, dwelling, and loving those who stick to it. That's a great question. Some folks would say then you go back to the "original Greek." But I've got news for you- we don't have the original Greek. They're gone. What we have is copies of copies of copies by man. So you have to ask yourself, which manuscripts survived and we're not altered by perhaps well meaning Scholars? I'll leave it at that. Hopefully your personal research leads you to convictions you can lean on.

After leaving extreme KJV Onlyism and escaping dispensationalism in the last two plus years I’ve been mainly using the NASB. Well, since my leaving of an extreme view of the KJV, I have become reformed in my Theology and actually just bought your 2nd edition of “Hold Fast To The Faith - A Devotional Commentary on the Westminster Confession” for my daily devotional. Anyways, In the KJV only (Extreme view) crowd we were always told to never trust the Greek or Hebrew texts, so now I’m slowly learning Greek and I’ve realized from my studies and talking to actual Scholars that the ESV is probably the best translation in English today. So, after prayer and some good advice I decided to use the ESV for my main translation rather then the NASB. God bless.

I miss certain features such as capitalized pronouns referring to God, italicized words not found in the Greek, and certain passages to be included in the text but in brackets. I am also not Reformed in theology. Despite those things I have found that the ESV is my primary translation. 2 Peter 3:14 NKJV - Therefore, beloved, looking forward to these things, be diligent to be found by Him in peace, without spot and blameless; 2 Peter 3:14 ESV - Therefore, beloved, since you are waiting for these, be diligent to be found by him without spot or blemish, and at peace. Strong's Definitions: ἀμώμητος amṓmētos, am-o'-may-tos; from G1 (as a negative particle) and a derivative of G3469; unblamable:-blameless. NKJV and KJV is correct, it's not blemish it's blameless. Just one example of many. And even the word practice is in error i.e. 1 John 3:4 ESV - Everyone who makes a practice of sinning also practices lawlessness; sin is lawlessness. trong's Definitions: ποιέω poiéō, poy-eh'-o; apparently a prolonged form of an obsolete primary; to make or do Practice should be "Does"

I really enjoy your video’s and thank you very much for the time and preparation you put into your work. I use the NIV, I prefer the original NIV but preach from the new NIV because that is what most people have. As for the gender neutral thoughts, read 1 Tim. 3, the qualifications for a deacon and see if there is any gender neutral problems there. None that I see. I think the gender neutral is over blown in most cases. The problem I have with the so called literal translations is the footnotes. Many times they will have a foot note that says “Literally...” and then give the literal translation, which many times makes more sense then the way they translated it. The ESV and NASB are both bad about this. AND I find that many times, the NIV uses the more literal translation that the other two put in the footnote. I am not a scholar but do study Greek as much as I can and I have found very few problems with the NIV, the old or new. I find more problems with the ESV and fewer with the NASB. Having said all that, I study from all three in my sermon preparation, the only translation that I tend to avoid is the KJV. Having been in the ministry over 40 years and at one preaching only from the KJV and close to the KJV only camp, I still find it hard to read and understand. And in many, many places I don’t understand why they translated something the way they did. Keep up the good work and I will keep watching.

Sir, I see that you almost buried the fact that the ESV is actually a revision, by conservative, evangelical scholars, of the RSV. To be fair, the NASB can be considered a REACTION by conservatives to the RSV. And the NRSV/NRSVue is more or less a corruption of the RSV.

Our pastor has just started using the ESV in services moving from the NKJV. I have noticed that the ESV has left out portions of verses on occasion and there are times when He or His or King of the Jews words referring to Jesus are not capitalized. The importance of the meanings or deity of our Lord is lost making Him equal with the worlds rulers. To me this is a sign of the softening or compromising of the Christian walk which is evident in today's world. I realize no translation is perfect or 100% accurate but I would rather stick with a direct, from the original translation than one that is translated from a translation from another just to keep up with the changes in the language. Vocabulary changes meanings every 50 years. Just think about words you knew as a kid and what the meanings are now.
