This is crazy, I'm so excited to give it a go.

I'm 58 years old. I started in music very early (at the age of 15 as a drummer in a garage band). I switched to Synths when I was 17 and then started using the "Amiga 500" computer for MIDI sequencing. Later I switched to a "Pentium 2" PC with Windows 3.11. Since then I've used and tested many, many, many DAWS (almost all) but after I found Reaper (Version 5), the search stopped. Reaper easily became my "go-to" DAW for everything audio-related. I don't need anything else. It is simple, fast, light on CPU, super-stable and owes nothing to any competitor. Stay safe.
@bulkvanderhuge9006Ай бұрын
Similar story to yours, but instead of an Amiga, I went with an Atari STE because it had MIDI ports already built in. I used DR. T's Exclusively, T.I.G.E.R. Dr T's KCS, etc, then when I switched to PC, I switched to Cakewalk, because Dr T's went out of business (Really LOVED Dr. T's) , then Cakewalk got bloated into Sonar which just got way too silly, so I looked for a cheaper alternative, and found Reaper.
@the.i.p.addressАй бұрын
Back in the 90s had some form of x86 machine and ran Cakewalk for DOS when it was midi only. Synced it up to an ADAT. I have been through various versions of Sonar, Pro Tools, Cubase, and Ableton Live. Now I use Reaper. It's a great setup and being that I am the same age as you and getting closer to fixed income, I let pretty much all of those licenses go. Just no compelling reason to keep using anything but Reaper.

i've been looking at various DAW review videos to figure out what to get since Cakewalk went paid and the unpaid free started acting wonky. This video alone moved Reaper to my #1 spot now. Thank you for making this video. So well done.

Reaper is: 1) The most optimized program for working with any type of processor (when you switch to Reaper, you will feel like you bought a new computer). 2) The most detailed customizable program, which will become an indispensable tool for you, with unlimited possibilities that cannot be achieved in another “just one program”. 3) The most frequently updated program, with quick bug fixes and serious innovations without loud advertising (if there is a critical bug, you can write to the developers, and they will release a fixed installer within a maximum of 2-3 days before the release of the official version). 4) Works on any system (Windows XP to Windows 11 and Mac OS 10.5 to 10.15+) with 32-bit and 64-bit plugins. 5) Price $60 for current and next versions (actually $30 per version). Developers work on each version for about 3 to 5 years, with frequent updates (about 2 times a month). You get a rapidly developing program for a penny. 6) A fully functional portable version of the program that works easily from a flash drive. You can work anywhere with your favorite program and plugins. P.S. All DAWs are good but Reaper is Fantastic!!!

Reaper is primitive. It doesn't support articulations in MIDI editor like Logic, e.g., for strings or bass guitars. There are no modulators or the Grid like in Bitwig. No synts, no instruments. You'll spend more money on VSTs than on other DAWs which have drum kits, pianos, basses, synts, strings, etc. Logic has AutoSampler plugin to sample external instruments. Guitar amps. Reaper doesn't have any of this.
@arthursoghoyan3471Ай бұрын
@@FirstLast-nr6gf It seems primitive.... but ))) Reaper is not a program for everyone, i understand you. But this is not just a program, it is a masterpiece. Over time, Reaper will have everything it lacks now. But other programs won't have much of what Reaper has, because this contradicts the principles of majority developers, they cannot allow themselves so much freedom, because this will cause many problems and affect the reputation of the program. For example, there are currently no other modern programs that support 32-bit plugins, and many other things... I don't think that other programs can make built-in oversampling on the mixer channel like in Reaper, because if you use it on a plugin that doesn't support oversampling the program will freeze. Developers will not create unnecessary problems for themselves. But this is not a DAW problem, but a plugin.The user must be a bit literate and know what is doing. In Reaper there are very many useful things that require user understanding, otherwise they can negatively affect the operation of the program, but despite this, these functions unblocked in Reaper and with the right settings they have a colossal effect. This is a very serious program for professionals with high demands. Or you can use it as a small lightweight program for various purposes, as many people do. P.S. Regarding virtual instruments, it seems to me that the developers of Reaper are doing the right thing by not bothering with it. There are many developers who create very high quality virtual instruments and specialized in this. For a DAW developer, this is a waste of time and gigabytes of garbage. Sorry, this is my subjective opinion, and i understand if many do not agree with me.

To me, Reaper seems like it was created with a programmer's mindset. It feels to me like an IDE for music. I think this is what intimidates some people, especially if they're used to simulate the analog console workflow. However, with a bit of experience and adjusting to this "programmer's mindset", they'll find that Reaper actually offers the most personal workflow, and it's actually super intuitive (to that mindset). Also, while the big number of options could seem confusing, it actually allows the simplest and fastest solutions to all kinds of tasks. I mean, effect containers? That's recursive effect channels. This addition to Reaper 7 is the cherry on top of the cake.

so cool! been using reaper forever now and i didn't know a bunch of these, but i also don't see the need/use for it in my workflow a lot of the time. I do like the embed features for projects though, great for mastering sessions. Though i usually do my mastering in reaper because of how incredible the render functions are and mixing elsewhere. One thing i wish was that "setting it up" was easier. the endless customization is great, but also time consuming. especially when many other daws come really organized. I also love a few features you didn't mention in this video, but Reaper has tons of features other daws dream about. like built in oversampling, built in dual meters on the master bus, etc. but yeah i could go on. I would like to see it have more midi functionality though and slightly better notes/markers and playlist/comping capabilities. but it's an ever evolving daw and it's come a LONG way since the early days when i started using it.

A key feature that I use is being able to record the output of that track directly into the timeline. This is brilliant if you want to use plugin instruments but record them as audio, I do this a lot so that i'm not tempted to quantise or correct the MIDI Data, you also haven't got to worry about whether you held the sustain pedal before recording, and can start the recording with a ready held note too. I've not seen that feature in any other DAW i've used. It provides an outboard experience with the variety and selection of plugins. Working in this way creates a more humane recording to my ear.

After using it for almost a decade, I finally get answers to the "why?".

Thanks Kenny, one thing for me that makes Reaper special is that out of the millions of times I've used it, it may have crashed once!! and that was because of a dodgy plugin. I always come back home to Reaper if I stray, because its the best ever DAW ever created for humble bucks.

It's always the fault of some sketchy VST developer. And in this regard, even NI is sketchy.

Reaper works best with my hardware setup, and I find it easier to use than Cubase, which is the main reason I use it. Thanks for your great tutorials!

Are FX chains a Reaper thing? Can't imagine my workflow without it.

Love it!! One little niggle though. I wish the midi panel had a more...hmm. ...organic. ... relationship with its associated track. i.e. instead of opening in a new window/panel it could open in an expanded track on the actual timeline. Would make things much easier. Just sayin.

I would like to move to Linux and I heard that reaper can read cakewalk project files. Will it read cakewalk file when it is installed on Linux? Also, cakewalk has a native pro channel and vocal strip. Does Reaper have something like it? If I'm us Reaper to record on Windows, and then later want to open the files on Reaper that is installed on Mac or Linux, will it work? In other words, can I move things in reaper between different operating systems?

simply stated, this is the best DAW on the market today, be it for Studio or Live applications. Those of us who use Reaper already know this. Stability, Stability.....Stability.

Hi Kenny. Greight vid. Yes my colege professor would agree with this vid. Infact the fact Reaper is so little and the price are 2 of the biggest things he liked about it. But the littlenesss and the price he also notes comes at a cost. He feels Reaper is too bair bones. He doesn't like the Rea plugins. But then again he uses Logic and Pro Tules. His main choice of those of corse being Logic. I'm using it cause on PC it's accessible.

Whose Reaper opens that quickly? The project I'm opening has multiple plugins, and loading them takes quite a whiiiiiiiiile :D
@poissonpuerile8897Ай бұрын
Virtually all of Reaper's load time is due to loading VSTs. Open something without them and you'll see a massive difference. So it's the VST manufacturers who need to get their butts in gear. NI made Kontakt 8 _slightly_ less horribly slow than Kontakt 7, for instance.

I don't even use Reaper (thinking about it) but I just like listening to this guy
