What surprised you from this list? How will you update your resume?

I'm curious - is it ok to italicize certain phrases in a resume (email addresses, quotes, etc.) or does that confuse ATS at all? I was surprised to hear how valuable it is to include a short summary under every job position! Thanks for this helpful video.

@@codybrook3292 What's more important is how it impacts the reader experience. Will they appreciate the italicizing? I've seen a lot of resumes over do it on italicizing or bolding making for a cluttered mess of a document. I don't see value in italicizing email addresses. Quotes I could see italicizing (but whether a quote is a valuable item to include on your resume is a different conversation). Don't over-estimate the intelligence of the ATS - it's not smart, and certainly doesn't care about typeface. Rule of thumb: if it's good for the human reader, it's good for the ATS. Thanks for your question!

The career gap strategy (13:27) was probably the most brilliant resume approach I've seen to date. Easy to incorporate and addresses the elephant in the room with grace. Greatly Appreciated!

@@Lovelies-Gents OK first it's important to know that remote work (what you've called online) is a way of working - not a target job, just like "in office" is a way of working, not a job. So it's important that you write your resume toward your target job. What do you mean by "data work?"

@@Lovelies-Gents OK so I recommend spending some time researching jobs where you get to use those skills. Right now, you're not clear enough on your target job to engage in an effective job search. You'll know when you're ready to start writing your resume when you can clearly name the job title that you want to apply to.

So much great info in this video Kamara! If the JD includes those vague, general, and lack-luster keywords in short bullet points, why does the job seeker get penalized? Curious.
@thatswhatshesaid Жыл бұрын
Thanks Carrie. Because the people doing the hiring in that case are incompetent or lazy. They don't put good effort into the job description, which reflects on poor hiring practices.

Acronym: FIFO. I worked in an advising office for business university students. During the walk-in advising week, students were to be funneled to their assigned advisor. However, if too many students started backing up then I was to alert the advisors that we’re changing the flow and they needed to start taking students that had been waiting the longest. So I messaged everyone “FIFO”. Only one advisor of 12 understood. None of them had been business majors or minors. First In- First Out. I thought is was very ironic that business advisors didn’t know a basic business term. Oh well.

Oh man...I'm honestly equally as surprised they didn't know what FIFO means.

Hi Kamara, Thank you for your video. I have a question about the keywords like the Detail Oriented one. Most of the time , these keywords are mentioned on the job offer, and we are told all the time that we need to add the keywords from the offer on our resume, because of the ATS programs that will filter those words. How do we know when the company doesn't use this technology? Thank you.
@thatswhatshesaid8 ай бұрын
Unfortunately that’s a misconception about ATSs. They aren’t that smart. What’s more important is using high-value keywords in the right context. A keyword is useless without using it in a sentence that shows how you demonstrate skill in said keyword so that humans can understand and verify your qualifications.

If we write keyword in our polite way, then ATS will not track it, mostly all recruits wants 80% ATS match resume.
@thatswhatshesaid Жыл бұрын
Incorrect. Recruiters are not looking for a keyword match. They are looking for qualifications demonstrated through context.
