A chip isn't easier or harder to waterproof because of how many cores it has, that is silly. Nor do those other things impact it. If water touches your electrical bits, they break. Regardless of whether it was a supercomputer, or an actual toaster, waterproofing simply means designing it in a way that water wont get into those electrical bits, regardless of how much ram they have to protect them from the water, or whatever you think the ram does.

While poorly worded, lack of innovative design is as legitimate of a reason as any to discredit these big names; Ironic considering we as consumers rely on them, placing the responsibility (but not necessarily obligation) for a solution(s) squarely on their executive shoulders. I would wager a design for waterproofing and modular ability is more simple than they make it seem given the tentative exploration with smartphone peripherals. Perhaps they'd like to charge an unrealistic premium for such a device but opt not to in order to see what their competition will do? The premium is already through the roof though...I wonder whether it's justified though... would be nice if they were more transparent with their manufacturing and business practice... most companies rarely are.

I would have loved to see more phones like the Samsung Galaxy Alpha. Aluminium or stainless steel sides to give it durability and a nice feel and a removable plastic back cover to reveal swappable battery, sim and sd card slots (and the screws required to take it apart) This would make phone cases practically obsolete since the back panel can be replaced if scratched up and the tpu-covered plastic makes it easy to hold on to your phone. I have never seen anyone using a glass-backed phone without a plastic cover - mainly because glass doesnt feel good when held for a long time and easily gets destroyed. So why bother replacing the plastic on the back when everyone still puts a plastic shell around it. Just getting some sweet reflective render images cant be the point for doing that, can they?

@RickOShay Жыл бұрын
Well it seems you were wrong - soon all.phones and laptops will have replaceable batteries. It's going to make cell phonea a lot safer and lengthen their lifespan. However Governments also need to urgently clamp down on Google and Apple in particular - for deliberately forcing premature replacement of older but fully functional phones by disabling /breaking critical apps (or slowing them down) - so they won't work on older phones - to force upgrades. We've all had numerous phones we've had to discard because the phone can not run the latest version of iOS or android - or older apps suddenly aren't able to function - even though the phone was in good condition. How this common practice has been allowed to continue this long - speaks volumes about the general incompetence of government technical oversight or rather the lack of it. Consumers need to be protected! We shouldnt be forced to upgrade. Despite Apple and Google claiming new features wont work on these older phones this argument is largely false. Most phones even those that are 8 or more years old are quite capable of playing YT videos or movies and sending and receiving email or browsing the web etc - that is if the operating system software didnt explicitly block phone models or require some non critical and often unnecessary 'new' hardware option or feature only available in new phones. There needs to be far more transparency from these two companies so they cannot force premature redundancy and replacement. It literally is criminal.

Samsung Galaxy S5 was waterproof, with headphone jack and removable battery. And many others that came before. So stop bullshit. Bendable battery? L shaped battery? Hard to change? Well for Linus maybe. If you attempt to do to a battery damage, thin plastic or metal cover isn't going to protect it, especially with modern design that has little to no enforcement ribs and or solid curved shape to resist bending. Alll the reason in a video is bullshit just like reasons to remove 3.5mm jack. What you're suggesting here is akin to car manufacturers locking the hoods on cars with special keys that only the dealer could then open and service to get to the car's engine etc... Give me some of what you've been smoking. Consumers have the right to repair devices they have paid for and own. That includes replacing a worn out battery. Likewise, tampering with software installed on a device is, let's be honest, THEFT. Yet when you hand your device over for a battery swap and get it back with all your data wiped that's exactly what happens. The practice of updating firmware to slow down perfectly working devices is precisely planned obsolescence. A premeditated act on the part of the manufacturer to render an existing working device useless and coerce the consumer to dispose of it and purchase a replacement, either the same or newer. Not only does this generate enormous and unnecessary e-waste, but leaves consumers financially challenged to spend more than they should. It is an extremely anti-consumer practice that has to end. And no, this "innovation" you speak of happens at the IC and PCB level. It has nothing to do about how the battery connects to the rest of the system, or the fact that the battery and power connections can both be sealed for water resistance/ingress.
@alexatkin5 жыл бұрын
@casiotechI You shouldn't have to risk breaking your phone to do it. If you want to swap it twice a day for longevity or fit a custom back with bigger permanent battery inside (at the cost of losing the waterproofing), that should be an option. Some of us even NEED thicker phones as we have disabilities that makes how thin they have gotten a bigger drop risk, or our fingers keep triggering the screen when simply holding it. There's a huge segment of the market being ignored here.
@portedbikes5 жыл бұрын
@casiotechI Do you also realize batteries as every electric device can fail without a warning? so forth a removable battery is way easier to to replace that a non removable one, also removing a thin glass panel, and replace the glue on the panel will also make your phone lose the water resistance, do you also know that the water resistance in the phones are not covered by manufacturers warranty? Do you know phones can be made with removable batteries and still be water resistant? With the advantage of staying water resistant after several battery replacements. A removable battery cost around $25 and it takes under 30 seconds to replace, there is not purchasing tools, double sided tape, risk of cracking the back cover or hours of delicate work, or ship your phone somewhere, or make appointments on a retailer. Ir is a battery operated gadget, on which batteries are known to deteriorate after 800 cycles which translates to 1 to 1 and a half year of use. Once batteries can hold over 2 or 3 K cycles that will be another story.
@portedbikes5 жыл бұрын
@casiotechI That is great, Samsung should have had hired you when they released the Note7 series. And yes it seems a lot better to do all that work and waste that much time instead of simply remove a cover and replace the battery in under 30 secs without even risking to lose the water proofing, this also allows you to go from 0% to 100% battery in under 30 secs. Definitely you have a point, you can make it sound fancy and talk about 3rd world countries, but you are just an average consumer that believes they are doing you a favor sealing the batteries inside the phone.

I will only buy phones with headphone jacks until I can trust myself to not loose earphones (the wires make them so much easier to find and use imo, so when I pop them out they can hang from my neckline) So pretty much headphone jacks will always be a checkbox (picked up a Samsung M31 a few weeks ago) Also, theres no reason waterproofing and replacement batteries can't be a thing together. Its been done before.

I've had a mobile phone for over 20 years, never had water issues, "water proofing the phone" is just to force you to replace a perfectly good phone sooner......built in obsolescence and you can still get new phones with removable batteries it's just not as easy :(

My first two smartphones were rugged and waterproof and had removable batteries. Glue is not effective for a waterproof seal so I’d say that the battery install method plays virtually no role in this. Size and greed are the only appropriate answers.

The real reason: your phone is never off if there's a battery with charge in it. Your phone can transmit audio, video, and GPS data when it's "off" which is actually standby mode.

Yep. Frankly I think phones are ridiculous at this point though. Their form factor seems to be 100% style 0% functionality. Ever tried to hold a high end smartphone for an extended period? It's a pain in the ass. Lack of bezels make it easy to touch the screen by accident, etc, etc. These devices are being built to look good in promo videos, yet the ergonomics of it seem a bit of an afterthought.
@plazasta4 жыл бұрын

why do people make the excuse that making the batteries be glued to the insides of their phones under an easily breakable glass back is somehow neccecary for water protection, I have a digital camera that is more waterproofed then any phone ever made, and has a touchscreen and has many buttons and has its own processor and wireless capabilities. and it still allows you to swap the battery and SD card at a push and turn of a button
