For several reasons I am looking forward to seeing Concussion next week, it's filmed in my hometown, it hits home with the Mike Webster and Justin Strzelczyk tragedies and I am also an extra in a diner scene with Will Smith and got to meet him, very cool by the way, my dad, who is 83 said to me last month that probably not in his lifetime but probably in my lifetime pro football won't be played anymore and I said I don't think so because there is simply too much money to be made. How many NFL players come from average to low class financial back rounds? My educated guess, a lot, so while the potential risks are high, the possible financial gains are simply too high to turn down, for the 1% who are actually skilled enough to get the chance to play football at the highest level and while this story is eye-opening and jaw dropping with the research and data recently discovered, young men will still play this Neanderthal sport no matter what

+cityofchamps66 - Hi - a cool little story from Philly, Will's hometown. Jay Wright, Villanovas's basketball coach was walking Will and his son around the campus to show them the school. As you might guess sports coaches have tunnel vision. He asked Will what he did for a living. Will said he was an actor. Jay then asked Will how it was working out for him.

So sad but true. What really angers me more than anything is the fact that these billionaire white man could care less about these players and none of their children and you could do the research yourself play the game of football why is that?

Delay is the deadliest form of denial. For over 100 years, the NFL has risen to America's game, & has given such incredible entertainment & games to this country. However, with the positive, comes the huge negative!! For all these men have given to the game, it has left there souls on the field. I just hope all the greats like Mike Webster, Junior Seau, Dave Dureson & the other countless players who have left us to soon due to the hits they have in countered, i pray that it isn't in vain....

I played football right up until my late thirties. I remember one particular hit, head on, helmet to helmet with a linebacker (I played TE). I went blind for about 10 seconds and dizzy for a few minutes but sat out only one play. I did not suffer prolonged hits like lots of players though as I only began playing as an adult. Football is a great game but leaves a legacy of arthritis, headaches and much, much worse it seems now. Everybody knew the risks but just like soldiers, we would not have given it up . . . .I hope measures are taken to reduce the risks of head trauma. Helmet design and rules as well as coaching a different method of tackling.
@tea3979 жыл бұрын
@David Bonnie - the shocking point that seems to be missed is - the human brain, our skulls were never designed to play football or any violent contact sport where our heads receive repeated hits to the HEAD. Its not only science & anatomy - its just plain common sense. Men are not Bighorn RAMS. Its unnatural, beyond dangerous & no helmet design can change the inescapable fact that football should cease to exists. No amount of money is worth your sanity, your memory, your mobility & irreplaceable moments with your family & friends.

+tea397 but it's not about the money. it's the passion of the game. I would risk my health for the sake of the game because it's what I love most. I understand if you don't understand because football is probably not the thing that keeps you going unlike me.
@Executor0099 жыл бұрын
+tea397 hahaha hold your horses, we do a lot of stuff that we know its unsafe for us (mma, driving, boxing, downhill, military service, living...) the thing here is that people should be aware of the dangers, and if they still want to do it go, that's their choice. and just to be clear I don't even like American football.

How about instead of spewing ignorance, you pick up a book and educate yourself. No one has time for your 1950s, ignorant mentality, and if you want a pie, I suggest you pick up a cook book, shimmy yourself into that kitchen you spoke of, and bake it yourself.

Wow, barely strung those sentences together. I see that I'm speaking to someone high on the ignorance scale. As I don't know you, and have no interest in knowing you, I don't see how you think that 1) any child I may have would be associated with you in any way, 2) talking to people, particularly women in such a manner is an acceptable thing to do. I hope that you aren't like this with women in your real life because I'd feel very sorry for them. You should scurry away troll

This issue is also complicated by horrible timing. Many players, at older ages, were not paid anywhere near at the levels of the current players. The players lost this suit even though they won. They got peanuts per player, plus no admission of guilt.

Are we just going to ignore that these are grown men? And even for the young players, they have parents, guardians, family, friends, doctors, etc. who are adults. Nobody is making these people play football. Every player makes a personal choice to play. If the players or the adults responsible for those players are so ignorant that they don't realize that taking repeated blows to the head will cause damage, someone else should pay for their ignorance. Should NASCAR, MLB, NBA, MLS, WTA, PGA, UFC, or other leagues have to pay for the injuries that those athletes receive? NO, they should not!

While not denying the long term consequences of concussions for foot play players, it must also be acknowledged that every players goes into the game knowing fully that football is a contact support with all its inherent dangers. Suing is totally just waste of the courts time and money

In our behalf we could say it’s wrong, but they could say what’s wrong with that everyone enjoys watching football. The irony in all this, It’s call football which is not play with your feet but with your hands and fatal injuries are mainly to the head. I am baffled😱😱😱 May the people that lost love ones to this sport find piece🙏🏻

Oblivionzzz... so few comments because nobody watches Frontline. Headlines in NYT don't reach most Americans. It's still, largely a silent issue. And an issue that a multi-billion $ industry wants covered up. It will take another decade or two for most Americans to realize that, like cigarettes, football kills. There's another part to this that even fewer folks care about, but that potentially could be just as, if not more, stunning. Chronic concussive or sub-concussive trauma isn't limited to American football. Soccer, lacrosse, ice hockey and rugby might all come under suspicion. Then we also need to consider individual sports such as ice skating, diving and gymnastics in which young children slam their heads against equipment, mats, ice and water, repeatedly. It's a vexing problem. It will take a long time to answer how much our society wants to accept or restrict activities proven to lead to CTE. By the way, big kudos to Boston University's team of neuro-researchers. BU also seems to be at the forefront of research into aphasia (loss of speech due to stroke or other disease) and other neuro-brain issues. And I thought all BU was know for was being a good party school!!!
@princeakeem86469 жыл бұрын
Wkillpatri There's a big difference between football and those other sports which you are overlooking, it's the fact that hitting is largely a foul in those sports whereas in football it is called "making a play". Life itself is fraught with hazards and you can find risk in any endeavor but foolhardiness is when you make a living out of self-immolation as is done in football.

So, ALL players now will, upon signing each respective contract will be "informed" that football can cause A-B-C problems , acute and possible long term issues. So when say Scott Boras negotiates with the team these "admissions" are defined when the 2 sides agree on, and accept all conditions stated in the contract. So now, [not prior to this research] this prevents further law suits going forward. Why salaries are higher, and in turn your admission to games, buying NFL attire etc will be constantly rising to meet these inflated salaries , so the research ended up costing the family of 4 more to see a NFL game, and college for that matter. why I no longer buy into this, its like investing in a sweat shop in the Philippines , you know these workers are under paid, but yet you still purchase the goods. NFL fans pay the price Both ways, and the Owners & League pay Nothing. America is Stupid, and keeps getting more stupid.
