Owning so many full frame cameras. The GR is the one that gives me no reason to leave it behind. The image quality and color rendition is outstanding. I own the GRiii and GRiiiX but the X is seeing the most days in my everyday Carry. Lens is sharp and camera and straight to the point. That is one great combo for Street. I use that combo (GRiiix with iPhone 13 Pro Max) for 80% of my workflow, especially for monochrome images. The GRiiix takes the images, transferred to the iPhone via Image Synch where I post edit in say, ‘Lr’, ‘Ps Express’, ‘Darkr’, or ‘Prisma’. I can even send out an image for printing without ever leaving the iPhone. There are several mobile apps for that purpose. And that is pretty where much of the industry is going, just review the PIXII 64-bit camera to get an idea of the interplay between technologies.

Great balanced video, as always. What surprises me is that - although I don't have any evidence - if manufacturers made stills cameras without video functionality - they would be cheaper, and I would imagine there would be a market. I have never used the video functionality on my cameras because I'm not a vlogger, for example, and I'm sure I'm not alone...
@boulderdash2000 Жыл бұрын
I can explain that circumstances for you. Modern tracking and af-systems has to use multiple frames per seconds from a sensor. Their is a face recognition system and eye-tracking with ten times adjustment per second. In this case you use a simplified sensor readout with "only" 4k...6k...8k video with 10 pictures per second. Only for scene recognition, face detection and eye-af. Any modern camera use this method. And now you understand why every camera got its price. Even cameras like a Ricoh GR3 got face detection. And this is why it can record full hd video. It is not a feature. It is always there. Use it or leave it. But the camera need it for AF
@j_taylor Жыл бұрын
@@boulderdash2000 Good point, if the capability is there to support other features, might as well give it its own feature. I'm puzzled how continual imaging would be required for focus tracking. My (older) Nikon DSLR has continuous auto focus "AF-C" but cannot record video. My rough and possbly wrong understanding is that it focuses on the subject, adjusts the focus a moment later, and basically plots a rate of change so that when you press the shutter, it has predicted the focus distance for that time. There's no exposure until the shutter trips and the mirror flips up. Is that a difference between "contrast detection" and "phase detection" focus methods?
@boulderdash2000 Жыл бұрын
@@j_taylor There is a huge difference. A DSLR use dedicated phase-detection-sensors under the mirror. It can't use the image sensor for detecting faces or eyes. Modern cameras use a three way system: At first they detect objects, then faces, then eyes. The second step is to use this information for the onboard phase detection. In the last step they use contrast af for last fine adjustments. In this case you don't need focus-adjustment in the camera menu like old DSLRs. And this three methods work continues together. Ten times a second. An old DSLR can't compete with its old 9...18...54 single phase detection sensors. You will loose a moving object fast. And modern cameras need extrem fast processors to keep up with fast moving objects. Fast sensor read out, fast processing. In this is why every modern camera can record video. Even if you don't like it
@j_taylor Жыл бұрын
@@boulderdash2000 Thanks for explaining! I forgot that cameras now can automatically track and focus on face and eyes. The way you explain it, of course it has to continually process live images to support that, which makes it basically a video camera.

Great videos as usual. I used to have the GR3 (28mm version) but sold it, although it's undoubtedly the best street camera around, even better than a Leica, if one considers the form factor. But for me the smartphone is king when it comes to street photography, simply because I don't like to point a camera at people. Smartphones are the stealthiest image-capturing devices and a dream come true for street photographers; despite the limitations you have indicated, which also apply to a flagship phone like mine. When I don't plan to take pictures of people in my photo walks or travels, I use the smallest and lightest interchangeable lens camera, such as the E-M10 Mark IV (I also own an OM-1 but I don't take it with me when I travel, too big) with two or three tiny quality primes. I love using wide angle and telephoto lenses when taking pictures of places or objects, so the GR3 won't do in many situations. But I did love that camera, and I wish I could have afforded not to sell it

Both do the same job - whisk you from A to B at high speed but the way the power is delivered is totally different. I love the in-line 4 sensation with a massive rush at the top end. The V Twin delivers loads of grunt at low revs - the same, but different. And so it is with cameras - intensely personal. I have a Galaxy S22 Ultra which takes great images - sometimes incredible images. I also have a GR iii. It takes great images - sometimes incredible images. The same but different. The biggest disadvantage of Ricoh and every Ricoh, is that you can’t easily go back in time and see what you have taken, or maybe find something attractive you didn’t notice when you capture it. Laptops, PCs, memory cards, external drives etc, are graveyards for most photo albums. Even i, who I consider myself an organized person, i get bored storing photos on my laptop. On my iPhone instead, I get thrilled how easy is going back to 2014, finding the memory I looked for. In conclusion, I think we give much more attention to Lightroom and all these programs, instead of a simple picture-memory

Lightroom automatically archives my photos by the date and I can go easily back to any date I want. However, iPhone does the same thing very well and makes a backup to the cloud, if you have that enabled and have bought enough cloud storage. Hi Matti!! Great video and you said it all! I also take my most portable camera everywhere for photography. But like you I also think its a personal taste and opinion. At the end of the day a good photo is one that gives you some kind of emotion, feeling or it just captivates you, the equipament you take the shot with is completly secondary. And like you said there are plenty of good photographers and I dare say videographers that do wonders on a mobile phone camera. We were at the gulf of Thailand and I took a picture of her (with my olympus pen ep7) with the water and a ship in the background. And somehow I did manage to set the focus right what made her stand out of the picture. She told me she didn't like the picture because for her it looks like she was photoshoped on top of the picture 😅 That shows me, Smartphone photography has changed how we see photos. All super sharp and in focus or with a heavy AI background blur.

I don't think your view on dedicated cameras is old fashioned. I think the younger generation (at least in the US) has started to recognize the value of detaching photography from our phones. That's part of the reason film photography has made such a big comeback in recent years. Ironically, even though we didn't grow up with film, we get a similar sense of timeless nostalgia from it. Maybe that's why people say the GR cameras produce "film-like" images.

Nice video and overall agree but two things here. You have never tried an app like Halide or Pro Camera+? You get full manual control over your aperture, shutter speed, ISO etc...also RAW functions, which your 5 year old iPhone X does not support. iPhone camera has come a LONG way since the X. Then you also have incredible apps like NOMO, which simulates about 50 classic film cameras. Everything from Leica and Pentax to Olympus and Contax, each one gives its own unique looks and character. No dedicated camera can touch having 50 different cameras in your pocket. Both have their advantages.

Thanks for your tips. I have used many apps that give manual control and RAW support too, but it's not about that. I simply prefer a dedicated camera. I don't dispute iPhone's versatility and I don't expect everyone to like the same things I do. So please, use any camera that works for you😀

I much prefer using a camera to a mobile. For one thing, it has a strap, so can sling it around my neck or shoulder. My mobile does not, and finding a pocket to fit it into when using is often a nuisance. Men‘s pockets are bigger than women‘s, so it‘s a handbag, or backpack, or something else. My older hand also tires of holding a mobile, it’s not very ergonomic, it doesn‘t with a camera, because of the strap, or the grip. My camera also takes better pics than my old iPhone 7+, which I mainly use for communication. The Olympus camera is my passion, mobile a nuisance, but a necessity these days. I emphathise and understand. The point about phone cameras being more expensive is actually nuanced - the reason why phone cameras killed the compact point and shoot market is that phone cameras are heavily subsidised by useage (buy a phone, get a camera) and by the telecom carrier (offer a never never plan that cover 2 years for a phone camera that looks like it costs nothing more than paying for telephone calls and data)

Thanks for the video Matti. I love my GRIII/IIIx cameras but when I'm out and want to take street shots my ratio of iPhone: GRIII can sometimes be about the exact opposite of yours. Yesterday for example I was visiting the new Art Gallery northern building which has just opened in Sydney Australia. I used my iPhone exclusively because not only did I want to take some photos but I wanted to check things on my phone as I went around and I didn't want to have a phone in one hand and a camera in the other. Galleries also can impose limits on some bags and on some cameras (definitely no tripods!) but I did see others with larger cameras. I find the form factor and ergonomics of the iPhone fine for me and it performed brilliantly in the gallery including the dark subterranean tank gallery (a former naval fuel bunker) that was in virtual total darkness at times and I'm not sure the GR would have managed the challenging light conditions. I guess this proves that everyone has different needs! Thanks again.

Dont own one, but have shot with a GRIII. YES, it’s a fine camera punches well above its weight, size and EVEN it’s price IMO. My only reason for not buying one is its well-known reputation for a penchant for non remedial dust collecting on its sensor and frequent scroll wheel issues. I wish Ricoh would address those well-known issues…your video has only served to whet my appetite for a GR again despite my misgivings about those potential and very probable issues.
@petegleeson1 Жыл бұрын
I've had my GRiii now for over 2 years and it gets a lot of use. I always have a case that secures on my belt so when I am not shooting I put it away there. I have never had any issues with the dust, there is now tech in the camera to clear dust, but I suspect it might be mainly a problem for people who "throw the camera in a pocket". Pockets being full of lint and dust, tissues and whatever. I can't says that's true as I look after my camera my way and so far so good. I had one day when the battery ran down in use and for several hours every time I turned the camera on it was like basic set up. The next day the issue had gone. My OM-D 5 MKII on the other hand the articulating rear screen unarticulated (fell off) the week before I went on a workshop with it. Over a tun to repair it and I have as a result slightly lost faith in it. I guess some of it with all cameras is luck, how you treat them etc. The scroll wheel issue is in my humble opinion a myth. The wheel operates in a certain way but it is reliable and just works. If I could afford it I might get rid of all my MFT stuff and just have the GRiii and the Griiix. But I didn't know that the type of photography I would end up doing would rarely need all those lens options.

one more thing, phone cameras are developing in a way that is out of your hands -- with every new generation, every new update, you don't know what you're getting. For example, portrait photography has often become more tailored to the specific needs of the Chinese market (refer to Marques Brownlee'' recent video on how the newest iPhones remove all asymetrical shadows from people's faces). I want to be the boss of how my images look; I don't want to relinquish this to some committee based in California or in China. In terms of price, with the GR, you replace the battery when it gets weak. With a phone, you send it in and pay ?$80. A phone you need to replace every 3-6 years. A camera, hopefully not.

Excellent. You explained it all. BUT: as the devil's advocate, I must say that the GPS info of the iPhone images can be handy. Especially because my phone pictures are often taken randomly and I forget where they were taken.

Thanks. The GPS info would be great for every camera.

You don't have to be sorry for people who shoot great photos on their phones. I like to use any camera as a tool. Even my smartphone camera takes nice raw-data photos thanks to lightroom. But it will never be the same. Afterwards I review my photo and try to develop it in lightroom. I use some lightroom presets and like to use profiles for great looking pictures. But every time when I use a smartphone I feel restricted. You got a plenty of noise in the sky and especially in the shadows. If you want nice structures from clouds, nice blue sky or colourfull shadows with real lokking skin tones, then every smartphone will be a huge disappointment. Even the new iPhone 14 pro can't compete my very old Pentax Q-S1. Both cameras got very small sensors. But the Pentax Q-S1 gives you better colours, better lens options and a more photo-realistic looking images. The iPhone 14 pro costs far ahead of 1200 $ and a used old dedicated camera far less the 300...400 $ with 2...3 lenses. In this case the smartphone is much more expensiv. And any dedicated old camera can blow the sh***t out of any smartphone camera. And a modern Ricoh GR3 plays cat and mouse with a smartphone

... as a follow up I just purchased the iii, but will be purchasing iiix before the end of the year. The camera can be taken with you anywhere with you and without bulk. The lens is just amazing! I have the 12pro and its fine, but all my important info is on there including my 2fa apps.I have too much to loose on my phone not to mention the GRs takes WAY BETTER pics than the phone anyways. thanks again love the channel.

Ricoh GR, X100, any of the fixed lens or zoom compacts are so much nicer in the hand and crucially, they have manual controls (PASM), DOF control, in many cases, viewfinders. I don’t know a single photographer or enthusiast who prefers a phone camera for actual photography. Heck, I’d rather shoot with the original Ricoh GR, the 10mp CCD 1/1.7” sensor version because it’s an actual camera. The APS-C GR? Forget it, images from that beauty utterly destroy my iPhone’s camera and it’s a pleasure to shoot with.

What if fake depth of field would become indistinguishable from real one? Same as special effect in movies or AI chat bot, hard to say what is real. And for some ppl it is undistinguishable even now.
@mattisulanto Жыл бұрын
It will come to that soon, of course, but we can still use and enjoy dedicated cameras if we like them. People shoot film and that doesn't make much sense either, but if you enjoy it, why not.

My iPhone has a 45 megapixel odd sensor but the results are nothing compared to even my TG-6 it’s just too computational, with a lot of artefacts. Not to mention the terrible ergonomics.
@gainde1137 Жыл бұрын
I just compared the Galaxy S23 to my Canon G7 Mark III. The smartphone has way better low light performance due to computational optimisation. Except of little better ergonomics I see no advantages of a compact camera anymore. 5 years ago it was different. Also with a mobile phone you are invisible for street photography. Will take some time until photography nostalgists will finally notice that smartphones are the way to go in 90% of cases.

I'm so happy to hear that a phone camera works for you. You almost never need a dedicated camera any more and I guess that is great.
@lore3334 Жыл бұрын
Its impossible to take better low light with a smaller sensor, the s23 has a pretty big sensor but still isnt 1 inch as the one in the g7 so it all depends on time of exposition. So your g7 should do better than the s23 if you fix the raw files since the Samsung has ai that does everything for you and also reduces noise via software.
@gainde1137 Жыл бұрын
@@lore3334 pysically it can't capture more light but with image stacking it can compensate that disadvantage. Sensor size is less important nowadays because of computational processing.
@lore3334 Жыл бұрын
@@gainde1137 image stacking isnt that great when there is movement (and there always is if you shot nature) and you can take burst shot photos on camera then go to lightroom and still them together (it put images together really well) and now lightroom had a new update where you can literally eliminate noise without reducing details and it works wonders

Huge difference between an iPhone 10 and a iPhone 14 pro.

I also think it would have been a better comparison to take an up to date model like iPhone 14 pro or even better android phones like Oppo find X6 Pro or Vivo X90 Pro+ - my guess would be that no one would see any difference

If the best phone camera equals the GR3, the GR3 is useless, and it is frankly insulting. So what is their offer really? "pay us the same amount you would pay for your phone, to get the same quality you would with your phone because we are lazy and this product is for idiots to burn cash". How lazy are the the guys from Ricoh? Well, if the sensor is nearly 1" in current flagship phones, and this is APS-C, it means it is 4 times larger sensor, and has about 4 times more space for glass. That means 4 times more light, more resolution, and if pair that with dedicated processor that needs to do no other task, it should destroy any phone at any price by a huge margin. What do we get for the money? Same quality. To put it in simple terms you pay 4 times more then the quality you get, or you get 4 times less quality then you should. Isn't this the dea? lose literally tons of features, versatility, convenience to gain quality? Except they did not delivered on the quality side, so you just lose. No wonder why camera manufacturers are in huge trouble, They did so little for so long, with very little innovation, and out of the blue they realized that very small unassuming cameras can match their "good cameras" AND it is in everybody's pocket. They are nearly a decade behind phones and it is too late. I bet in 5-10 years the processing will be good enough to shoot a weeding on your iPhone or Galaxy Note, and if you think that is a long time, my phone that I am looking to replace is 7 years, so that is 1-2 phone upgrades away.
