Wonderful video! But I also have a couple of points to add on -- I believe, apart from the ethical theories talked about -- and taking them into consideration as well -- the 'goodness' and 'rightness' of an action is really contextual and temporal. An action right today maybe considered wrong tomorrow and a virtue considered wrong yesterday, might be considered good today. For example, courage in women to stand up against the atrocities. Earlier -- even today -- an example of a 'good girl' or a 'good woman' was someone who accepted everything as it is, without questioning it; but today, in a lot of parts of the world, being submissive is considered cowardly, rather than right. At a personal level as well, there come minute differences, depending upon the way we are socialized, the sum of experiences that made us and our ideas, in the criteria of determining what is 'right' and 'good', just like happiness. And sometimes, there is a dilemma of choosing between the right action and the good outcome. Is the outcome good enough that the action is war or killing lakhs of people? Or is the action right enough even if it leads to disastrous outcomes? And that again would depend upon the really personal definitions and criteria we have set for good and right.
@ethics1014 ай бұрын
True, the idea of right and good is context driven, and the sense of right and good differs among individuals. But our sense of right and good broadly adheres to social contours and basic universal values. I must thank you for bringing this up, as I consciously avoided talking about context, & subjectivity as I wanted to keep the scope limited to basics. The question of dilemma between right and good is something I will be taking it up in later episodes as case studies. Do keep sharing your perspectives… and thanks again for adding value to the discussion.

In larger connotation you are right, metaphysical ethics are highly variable and subjective in nature. The right and good here is weighted in degree of acceptance. Suppose a mosquito is been ready to consume your blood , you killed the mosquito. From mosquito side , she was doing her underline work to bite and survive which deontology in approach . You killed that mosquito to protect yourself from vector borne disease and by killing you saved greatest no. Also. This action is Good work in nature from utilitarian perspective. In a nutshell the assing role define an action right or good. 🙏🙏🙏🙏

I think Right action can in most cases lead to good outcomes, in the long run (if not immediately) whereas its not necessary that good outcomes through any means will be long lived. Since Consequentialist also talk about long term good, we should focus on the former. I don't know if it makes sense here but the line "Mehnat kar, fal ki chinta naa kar" sort of reflects this. Moreover, actions in the former case will be treated as an end in itself and not means which is more important.

Hi, what are suggesting is means and ends issues. And, that’s something I will be taking it up in a different episode. Meanwhile, the purpose of discussing right and good is to ensure that we understand the difference and not use it interchangeably. Further, understanding right and good is the stepping stone for comprehending ends and means dilemmas. Thanks for sharing your thoughts…do keep writing in

excellent content sir. i have a popular case where there is a person A in a village. he is becoming a problem to everyone because he is rich powerful and thinks he can say whatever he wants to the villagers and get away with it. person B, a member of the village is a spectator to this event who does not appreciate what person A is doing. should he use immoral means like threatening person A to ensure he doesn't trouble other villagers or should he talk politely with person A (which wont lead to any change in the current situation)? assuming there is no police administering the village, whatever action needs to be taken, must be taken by the villagers. the first option is about a 'good' outcome of the villagers getting freed from person A and the second option deals with the 'right' way of doing things. what would be your take on this sir?
@ethics1013 ай бұрын
You have made the right vs good sound simplistic…wondering where did you get this “popular case.” Even if you want to choose good outcomes, using immoral means may provide immediate relief what about long term…good outcomes needs to have a long term perspective as well. This is where right means are preferred as it ensures sustainable outcomes. Anyway, this is the subject of another episode
@probharat-b6q3 ай бұрын
@@ethics101 the case is from my neighborhood haha. but like i said, the 'right' way will not lead to any change in the situation as person A will just not budge. pressuring him would likely solve the problem. so should we choose the 'right' way and suffer or the 'immoral' but effective way [the possible fallout may be him trying to assert counter pressure on us, which will only unite us even more against person A]. its a tough conundrum.
