Why Risk It??? SpaceX's Ramping Up Upgrades The Chopsticks For Catching Starship Flight 5...
SpaceX once amazed the world by successfully landing a rocket booster. But now, they are facing an even bolder challenge-catching a giant rocket falling from the sky.
In Starship Flight 5, to catch the Super Heavy, the key factor is not only how the rocket lands but also the synchronized movement of the giant catching arms-part of Mechazilla.
Therefore, as a new milestone approaches, SpaceX is speeding up upgrades to these arms.
What have they done so far? Are there any challenges awaiting SpaceX in Flight 5?
All will be in today’s episode of Alpha Tech:
Why Risk It??? SpaceX's Ramping Up Upgrades The Chopsticks For Catching Starship Flight 5...

And now, let's continue!
With what has been revealed over time, we all know that SpaceX is determined to catch the Starship booster-Super Heavy-during the upcoming launch, even though some skeptics doubt this move, knowing it carries certain risks. However, to pioneer or break old conventions, one must not be afraid! SpaceX is remarkable in its belief in the long-term and vast potential that catching the rocket can bring.
Why Risk It??? SpaceX's Ramping Up Upgrades The Chopsticks For Catching Starship Flight 5...
The process of catching the rocket is entirely handled by a tower that CEO Elon Musk calls "Mechazilla." This tower is equipped with various functions to support the entire operation. Mechazilla's simplest part is a third arm that is vertically fixed in place but can swing left and right. This swing arm contains plumbing and an umbilical device that connects to Starship’s upper stage, supplying propellant, gas, power, and connectivity.
But more importantly, there is an essential component-a pair of giant, far more complex arms called Chopsticks. Giant hinges connect the pair of arms to a carriage that grabs onto three of the tower’s four legs with a dozen skate-like appendages. These skates are outfitted with wheels, allowing the carriage to roll up and down tracks built into the tower’s legs.

They should do a small scale test with a modified Falcon 9 to show it's possible before going with Starship. Probably would alleviate a lot of anxiety from administrators and FAA.

I just wish Elon would test the chopsticks with a modified Falcon 9 first.

I think they just want to really examine the booster and tower and spot issues now before they proceed without legs

yes! since the tower capture story is not simple, it is undeniable that SpaceX spent a lot of time considering this part.

The comparison between the Falcon 9 landing technique and Super Heavy’s catch method really highlights how far SpaceX is pushing innovation. The Chopsticks are a fascinating step forward!

The only way SpaceX will know if they can catch a booster is to risk it. Now that they have the second tower. I'm sure they will try soon. Excitement guarrenteed!

The capture has not been verified yet, but the tower has risen, and it is a thought: it must be successful.

I wish SpaceX all luck in the world to make a successful catch but I still would not risk my only launch complex. I would wait till had a couple but not my call. I would like to put in my vote to make Elon head of the FAA!

what guarantees the orientation of the landing pins which need to be precise? Why not have more pins in case orientation is not perfect?

How many engines will be lit during the catch? It's not like All of them will be blasting the pad...

Why not try it on a drone ship or a mock tower on land first?

One thing about Elon and his engineers, the think outside the box all the time. As Walt Disney Imagineer once said; "If you can dream it , you can do it"

The notarion of falcon nine using a suicide burn on landing is completely erroneous. True, the approach profile is carefully optimized, but this very multidimensional trajectory in phase plane is stabilized, meaning that each of the six degrees of freedom is controlled by measuring both the position and the rate,( velocity ) and using LQR feedback any deviation of the velocity from the nominal is corrected by thrust magnitude and vectoring of the engines, and also the attitude using the gridfins. That makes it possible to reach the required landing position and attitude at zero velocity with a small uncertainty.

Why not build separate "catch" towers closeby? They would be easier and quicker to build, because they would not need any of the launch hardware, only lift and catch mechanisms. Risking a pad used for launching will be very costly if it destroys/damages the pad.

Could Starship lose one of its three Raptor vacuum engines and still make it to orbit?

The question should be? When will starship complete an orbit of the earth? Say one revolution. But 10 would be a better proof of concept.

No its a massive flying missle that should land on legs or glide in on wheels to land/ ZXSquashing cylander to a mflatterned shape having wheels and extending flattened winglets it should glide down to runway. safer for area passengers to exit. SN does not need to land like a pencil hopeing a huge winch does not get jammed with dust wear power problems. it only needs the shape to get to space. moon landing needs a high upper rocket motor set up low landing exit door way for people hauglage. Meccano in space changes outside ful;e pod engines to rocket akin to Kubricks 20001 moon taxi Buck rogers pencil ships are for si fi books films not reality catching flies with chop sticks is a film Musk saw and believes it real

If spacex did not Record in vídeo, like every other companhia, spacex would be in a clear Algo if spacex did not reuse his booster it also would be in a clear, but spacex raise qualidy control by filming everyting e recovering its bossters . Now every onther companhia are trying tô the same
