Bengaluru has a high potential for generating electricity through rooftop solar but much of it remains untapped. The uncertainty associated with rooftop solar and its payoffs deters people from investing in rooftop solar. Additionally, poor policy support is holding back the city’s ambitions.
Growing research on the financial returns from investing in rooftop solar and early adopters exhibiting some amount of cost savings shows some hope for tapping the potential of rooftop solar in Bengaluru.

The biggest problem is no subsidy in KA. In Gujarat they are giving 40% subsidy and this has boost drastically.

There is subsidy given by central govt. It is 14k per kw up to 3kw and 7k per kw afterwards up to 10kw

F'ing BESCOM / KEB babus have to be fired with no pention or any retirement benefits. I know a friend whose father works in BESCOM and I know all about their income sources. His family's total income is 1/3rd of mine. While I've struggled to just buy one apartment in Bengaluru, his father has bought atleast 8 residential sites in Bengaluru & my friend complains that his father is the least performer in wealth accumulation in his office. Do I have to say more???

Actually all big IT companies can easily do it, they have huge campuses with massive rooftops in Bangalore, but sadly they don’t seem interested.

On one hand the Central Government wants to boost Solar Panel installations. But on the other GST is increased by almost 3 Times. Secondly, Cheaper and More efficient Solar Panels from China are slapped with 40% duties. This makes them very expensive. High initial investment is the BIGGEST hurdle in adoption of Solar power. The Third hurdle is local bureaucracy in the Energy Distribution.

@@desaipriyank1 subsidy is a scam. They are giving subsidy on low tech indian panels only not on latest technology. In fact without GST people can invest on latest technology at the same price point. Latest tech panels generate more energy and last more than 25 years. Government subsidised panels performance drops significantly after 10 years and generation too is low. So please dont fall pray to the subsidy nonsense. Look at the overall picture. Instead of subsidy government should remove GST on solar equipment & the market will automatically buy the best tech available at competitive price

It should be made compulsary for new upcoming residential apartments to install on grid solar roof tops atleast of a low capacity that will distribute the cost. They dont need to bother about subsidy or GST. In anyway it will be low on initial budget and cost effective in long term. Capacity can be increased gradually.

It seems frequent Central Government has been changing the rules and regulation on Solar subsidy. Only 4 or 5 years they have to revise the Rules and regulations of the Solar power at national level to encourage to utilize Solar power in the Metro and big Cities in India.

The main problem is that many people think having a rooftop solar is a luxury and fancy thing which only the rich go for. People need to be educated on this aspect. Having a solar rooftop is the most basic necessity in this generation.

Many are keen to take the plunge, but worried about BESCOM's redtape. Unless there is demonstration of political will by simplifying the process in Bengaluru, average citizen will not go for solar.

Concentrating solar thermal is a much better option if Bengaluru wants to harness solar energy. Just build a plant and connect it to the existing power grid. China could build the plant if the industrial capability of Bengaluru is insufficient.
