Russia has been on the agenda with the ongoing war with Ukraine for months. As the winter approached, the continuation of the war and Putin's enactment of the annexation of four regions brought to mind the question of how long the struggle would last. Throughout history, one of the most important elements of Russia's success in wars was known as General Winter. Thanks to the cold and harsh weather conditions, Russia had often been advantageous against its enemies. Accustomed to the harsh climate, Russia often knew that its enemies would fail to combat the bitter winter. And he developed tactics for this. The British, on the other hand, named this harsh ally of Russia 'general winter'. Napoleon was just one of the commanders defeated by General Winter. His great defeat in the 1812 campaign was ridiculed in a humor magazine with the words General Winter beats Little Skinny. So what happened in this war that resulted in Russia's decisive victory? Napoleon gathered his army of approximately 680,000 men, mostly foreign nationals, and set out. The calendars were showing June 24, 1812 when he crossed the Niemen River. As the French army advanced, serious supply problems arose, worsened by the Russian army's policy of scorching. I wish it was limited to that. Winter was approaching, and the French soldiers would be shocked by the harsh cold that the Russian soldiers endure. They were not used to this situation at all, and as the cold increased, diseases and troubles began to increase. Still, Napoleon had no intention of stopping. He was obsessed with showing his teeth to Russia once. The Battle of Borodino, which took place on September 7, 1812, was the bloodiest battle seen during Napoleon's Russian campaign. Finally, Napoleon achieved his goal and entered Moscow on 14 September. But he was not at all enjoying his great victory as he had expected. Because in Moscow, where he entered with great hopes, he encountered a terrible sight. Everywhere was on fire. The Russians, who practiced tactics by withdrawing inward, not only confronted the French with harsh cold, but also plundered the place. In addition, Napoleon expected to be greeted by the delegation at the entrance of the city as a tradition of war, but this did not happen either. He was in great disappointment. Meanwhile, some Russian generals were releasing prisoners from prisons and wassuing orders for the bazaars and market places to be set on fire. In other words, they would not give the French peace in Moscow. Thousands of French soldiers who could not stand the harsh cold lost their lives. Thus, the general winter went down in history as the element that undertook the greatest task in protecting Russia from Napoleon's invasion. The French were not the only ones succumbing to Russia's winter. When we examine the past a little more, we see that even the Swedes accustomed to the cold climate succumbed to General Winter in the war in 1708. In this war, almost half of the soldiers and horses in the Swedish army froze to death. Alright what now? While the war between Ukraine and Russia has not been concluded for months, will history repeat itself with the approach of winter?
