I understand that they only made one actually, making a vehicle that hangs from the ceiling, rotates and moves is very difficult and hard to make safe for the guests. I remember watching the "making of" video of a dark ride attraction in the Netherlands that also uses hanging vehicles which turn around, it was so difficult for them to make it work properly and be safe at the same time that they almost had to cancel it. Luckily for them they also managed to do it, and that dark ride attraction also became their most popular attraction in the whole park. Hanging dark ride attractions seem to be a lot more fun, no?
@L1nkn1vy6 жыл бұрын
To expand on the ride capacity issue, Peter Pan only can have 2 people per car because the cars hang in the air. Snow White and Pinocchio can have 4 per but the track is on the ground. Some slow rides like Pooh have a max of 6 people per car. Haunted Mansion also has their conveyed loading area which is super fast to load people and have people exit.
@whossoul6 жыл бұрын
Yes, the load/unload time doesn't help it. If you pay attention, you will see that people will get on, ride through, and be back to the load station only after one or two other ships have left. When it takes barely less time to load a train that it does to get through the ride, then you are looking at a low guest turnover!

I worked this attraction at Disneyland in Anaheim. Never were we able to move 1000 per hour through the attraction. Loading is tough. Usually 2-3 per flying boat. No second seat. Any guest not paying attention starves the dispatch as they meander-into the seat. The seat is low and the safety bar was big. Starving the dispatch means the ride is able to release a boat into the ride but we are waiting for the guests to sit down. It’s also a more popular attraction than SnowWhite. The queue is very interactive. This is a great attraction.

Me and my family just got extremely lucky a couple days ago, we got off it’s a small world right when magic kingdom closed and we went over to Peter pans fligt ride and asked if they are still open and the ride attendant was about to say no and then I think it was his manager said “you guys will be our last riders” and it was so empty! This was really interesting, but it doesn't really explain why Peter Pan in Disney World is always crowded. The other rides in Fantasyland aren't like they are in Disneyland, so I'm not sure what would make it so crowded here other than it just being popular.
@michaelthebishop52906 жыл бұрын
Well I can tell you why it's so crowded at Disney World and I came here thinking it would be brought up because it's in the channel's name: FASTPASS. Really think about it. Peter Pan's Flight in Disney World is an omnimover ride. Therefore, it is constantly loading. Shouldn't the line be constantly moving?? Well, because Disney lets in about 80 fastpass riders for 20 standby line riders, that's why Peter Pan's Flight's line sucks. More anecdotes for proof: The Peoplemover in Tomorrowland does not have fastpass (fortunately, it likely never will as there's no place to hold a queue) and the line is never more than 10 minutes. In addition, Spaceship Earth at EPCOT used to not have fastpass and the line was never more than 10 minutes. Now that they've added fastpasses to Spaceship Earth, the line regularly hits 50 minutes. The moral of the story: omnimover rides SHOULD NOT have a fastpass line. The ride is constantly loading and therefore they should have ONE line that is constantly moving.
@Sunset5536 жыл бұрын
michaelthebishop Can you explain what being an omnimover ride has to do with long wait times? I’ve never heard the term omnimover.
@michaelthebishop52906 жыл бұрын
Omnimover is a ride system in which the vehicles are all connected and the ride never stops moving. Haunted Mansion, Peter Pan's Flight (at Walt Disney World), The Peoplemover, Spaceship Earth and Buzz Lightyear Space Ranger Spin are all omnimover rides. There's more but those are just some for the sake of demonstration. Since these rides never stop moving, it means that people are constantly being loaded onto the ride. This should mean that the line for the ride should constantly be moving since the people at the front of the line are constantly being loaded onto the ride. The reason the line is not always constantly moving is because the people who use fastpasses on these attractions are taking priority and at Disney, the ratio I typically hear is 80 fastpass liners to 20 standby liners. The cast member at the merge must wait for 80 people to go through the fastpass line until he takes 20 people from the standby queue. THAT is why Peter Pan's Flight has a long standby line. If the fastpasses were removed from Peter Pan's Flight, I could guarantee there would never be more than 30 minute wait. EVER. But Disney doesn't want that ;)
@michaelthebishop52906 жыл бұрын
Well allow me to check the apps right now for comparison (I understand I am checking at only one particular moment so this isn't the best demonstration but.. a demonstration no less) At 3:08 pm in Walt Disney World, Peter Pan's Flight has a wait time of 85 minutes At 12:08 pm in Disneyland, Peter Pan's Flight has a wait time of 35 minutes. Also keep in mind that the Disneyland version is not an omnimover ride. So at the loading dock, the ride vehicles come to a stop. And yes, this does make a very large difference.

michaelthebishop Exactamundo. This video starts off with the title Why is Peter Pan so Crowded and then it ends almost 15 mins later with tag “So that’s the story of Peter Pan’s Flight”. Well, which one is it? The only SINGLE reason is the FastPass system and this video completely missed that point, instead opting to go over an in-depth (and interesting) story about the DL version of this ride. Good effort, though.

For those visiting Disneyland in Anaheim: if you want to ride Peter Pan's Flight without a huge line, there are two ways I can think of, but both take a lot of effort and still involve waiting. First, you can try and get to the ride as soon as Disneyland opens, which involves arriving AT LEAST 30-45 min prior to park opening. Try this method on a day that Disneyland does not offer Magic Morning (1-hr early entry for Disney Resort Hotel guests and 3+ Day ticket holders), otherwise the line will likely be full right at rope drop. Second method is to hang around the Fantasyland area around the time the fireworks are scheduled to start. All those rides are shut down during the fireworks and reopen as soon as they get the all clear from the fire marshall. Before and during the fireworks, a line begins to form for those who want to ride Peter Pan as soon as it reopens. If you see this line starting to form, join it! Just note that sometimes, it can take 45 min to an hour after the fireworks to reopen, but that's a risk you may have to take. Long story short, if you want to ride this thing you're just about guaranteed a long wait. It's up to you whether you spend that time in the ride queue, outside the park gates, or waiting for the attraction to reopen after the firworks.
@pebblemistofriverclan6976 жыл бұрын
coolness06 Wow, rides shut down during the fireworks in Disneyland!? That's weird! They don't in Disney World. In fact the best time to get on a ride is during the parades and fireworks because most guests go to watch, usually leaving wait times for rides significantly shorter.

The ride is not free from scary things. There is a huge Skull Rock, we see Tiger Lilly tied up, Wendy is about to walk the plank and plunge into shark infested waters, Captain Hook is there and he is not friendly either, plus he is shooting cannons at your ship as you gleefully fly over Neverland. I am not sure if I buy that theory that the other dark rides are scary but NOT Peter Pan. But I do like this terrific and entertaining video all about such a classic Disney attraction.

Peter Pan's Flight's ridiculous wait times are mostly due to the fastpass system being implemented onto an omnimover ride. While everything stated in the video is correct, the biggest factor in the long lines (at least for the Walt Disney World version) was completely omitted.
@whossoul6 жыл бұрын
I can believe that! Disneyland not to recently added a fastpass to the Matterhorn Bobsleds, and adding a fastpass just made things worse! It was a ride that never needed a fastpass. The line usually was between 15-30 minutes. It was extremely rare to see it reach 45. However, they added a fastpass to it, and now standby is typically 30+ minutes, getting to 45 frequently, and sometimes more than that, which never happened before fastpasses. They can be great for some rides, but for rides that don't need them, they just create a problem instead of fixing a nonexistent one.
@iLuvvYuuMjxXxLia6 жыл бұрын
michaelthebishop well at Disneyworld they don’t have Pinocchio or Snow Whites Scary adventure so they aren’t really battling other old dark rides. Little mermaid and haunted mansion have a conveyer belt so they are a lot faster. I think what keeps Peter Pan is so busy is the fact that there’s no height or age restrictions so it’s okay for everybody to board and it’s family friendly, like the video says. Also, it flies!
@michaelthebishop52906 жыл бұрын
Nothing you said made any coherent sense... First, It's A Small World is right across the way. And even when Snow White was open at Disney World, Peter Pan still had a long ass wait. I hope you do realize that omnimover ride system is the same thing as what you called "a conveyer belt." Peter Pan is undoubtedly popular but the primary reason Peter Pan's Flight has a long line at Walt Disney World is the fastpass plus system.

I hate fast passes so much. All they do is fuck with the casual experience and I gotta treat getting to the parks as a damn strategy game in order to do anything that day. As a Disney vet, this strategy still holds. When it opens go straight to Fantasyland. We tackled Dumbo and then Peter Pan, because you have about 30 minutes before everything fills up. I always guessed it was crowded because of the overhead feature of the ride. The other four are grounded. And the most popular after Peter Pan is Alice which has a few parts outside on supports. Good to know about those renovations.

I used to be a Fantadyland RO CM at Disneyland and Peter Pan's Flight was always a fun stop on our rotation of the east side dark rides. This was 15 years ago'ish so it was in between the previous update and the latest. The CM that opened the ride every morning would rearange the blocks in the nursery to spell out something Peter Pan related so it was a new experience every day. We also were the test facility for the "new" Tokyo Disneyland's Peter Pan's Flight Guest movement system. Instead of the pirate ships tat flew you from scene to scene the Guest (in groups of 4s) were encased in a body harness that pivoted to give the illusion that they were flying along w/ Peter, Tink and the Darling children. It was great, it was fun but i guess apparently scrubbed as it never made it to the ride. Those were fun times working there.

It's the flying motion. It just feels great. Plus, the use of Tinkerbell in the fireworks just makes you WANT to go on the ride again. Last time I was in Disney World, I had some sort of list which ride I went on the most during the week. Peter Pan ended up on the top, followed by Splash Mountain. Granted, Splash mountain would have won against it if not for the long waiting times there if you don't (like me) are there when the park opens and go a few rounds before it becomes crowded. But Peter Pan is pretty high up on my favourite rides, and I am apparently not the only one feeling that way.

I think the answer is simple. People dream about flying! Dumbo always has a ridiculous line for the same reason. WDW even added a second Dumbo ride to remedy this problem. The idea of flying and visiting an island where you don’t have to succumb to old age is wildly appealing to most everyone.

Touring Plans observed Peter Pan’s Flight in Disneyland takes 11 min per 100 riders. That’s 545 riders per hour where Pinocchio’s Daring Journey has a capacity of 8 mins per 100 riders (750/hr). That would account for the 45 min wait for Pan when it’s 15 min wait Pinocchio. The dispatch intervals are about the same but the vehicles hold 1 row instead of 2. I enjoyed the video!

I always heard that the guests that Peter Pan can handle per hour was down in the 500 range, not 800-1,000. I know it's not officially released information from Disney, so there is no way to know for sure. But 800-1,000 seems way too high, especially when you compare it to Haunted Mansion. The Doom Buggies and pirate ships hold the same number of people (2-3). There is no way that Haunted Mansions continuously moving belt only loads/unloads 2.5x faster compared to Peter Pans slow moving load that frequently can only load 1 or 2 ships before another arrives. If you have ever been terribly bored in that eternal Peter Pan line and started to watch the progress of people, seeing who goes through, how many other people have loaded before they return....it's a snails pace. Yes it's the best dark ride ever, but I think that has very little to do with its long wait time, I think it almost all boils down to guest capacity.

Some feedback: You guys are doing great! This whole video is engaging and well-written, with great visuals. I clicked on it even though I didn't even know what Peter Pan's Flight was because you had a great thumbnail and title, too. As for critiques, I think a clearer microphone with less echo would make the whole thing a little more polished, and the sound effects such as the one at 9:56 could be a bit more subtle so as not to distract from the narration. But overall you guys put together a really informative and engaging video, and I really liked it. I have always loved Peter Pan since I read the book as a child. But oddly I never got on well with the Disney movie. It would either make me angry or I'd be terrified. Yet the ride at Disneyworld which was the one I was going on was one of my favorite rides in the park, because it contained all the basic magic of the story without the things in the movie that didn't go over. That and you're riding in a flying ship, how can you not love that.

Good question lol! We rope drop it because I don’t want to use a fast pass for it and I refuse to wait a long time for it. Pooh is 2nd. This is while everyone else is headed to the mine train.

This has ALWAYS been my favorite ride and I have been going to Disneyland for over 50 years! Yes, much like Peter, I don't want to EVER grow up! Throughout the changes that have been completed on the ride, I think the thing I miss most is the fog and clouds as you are flying over London. I understand the reason these were taken out, ie; people spitting their gum onto the clouds or throwing trash in them to see it suspended in the air, but I still miss it. Removing that took away some of the magical element and reality of flying OVER London! Thanks for the excellent video! #fastpassfactsgiveaway

Mr toads wild ride is packed too! Peter pan is a mini thrill ride, especially when it dips down you feel like you're going to fall out!

I've always thought it was simply the ideal midpoint for a full park tour. We always used to start left through Adventure & Frontier Lands... & others starting in Tomorrowland also probably end up at Peter Pan around the same time behind the castle.

It honestly was never that bad before the 60th renovation. It's only been since then that the lines are so long, it used to be walk on certain days and most nights. But as people want to see the revamped version of an old favorite, the line backs up. Especially with the limited loading issues, but you can't have two rows for that ride because it would ruin the view for those in back. Also, Alice got her fantastic upgrade before Peter ever did, and it was because of how successful that was and how people did end up supporting it, that they touched Peter. Alice had the same massive lines issue when it first reopened as well, and it still remains longer to this day, though it has improved some.

Does anybody else remember after the '80s refurbishment, going on Snow White and seeing the Witch with no apple? Turns up, it was originally just attached like a finial, and guests kept stealing it. LOL Heard that from a friend who worked there, so it might be another Disney urban legend, but I had an annual pass at the time and went most weekends and I DO remember that half the time the apple wasn't there.

I usually have to go to the Disneyland in Paris since it is much closer but it is amazing there. However, it is very crowded like you said. Sometimes the Fast Pass lanes take longer than the ordinary lanes! We have Adventure Land at Disneyland Paris so Skull Rock and the ship are in a completely different area. It's right next to the Pirate's of the Carribbean ride too.

Fun fact: I have a stuffed animal horse I have had since I was 4. I named it Peter Pan. It was my favorite movie at the time and is still one of my favorites because it reminds me that even though I am now 20, there is still a little part of me that will never grow up.

This was one of my favorite rides along with "it's a small world". I visited Disneyland in the late 70's.

The video mentions the silent film version of Peter Pan being an influence on the disney movie. More than you might expect in a round about way.J.M. Barrie disliked the silent film version because they made title cards for every line in the play. He felt that it should have been adapted for the screen so he wrote a "Silent Film Scenario" of Peter Pan where the story was almost entirely visual. His version had only two title cards!!! In his version he provided much more back story and a lot more detail about the fairy folk. When Disney went to make the animated movie of Peter Pan he purchased the rights to the play and J.M. Barrie's silent film scenario.

CORRECTION: December 27, 1904 is NOT when the novel of PETER PAN debuted, but instead was when the play premiered. The novel wouldn't be published until 1911. In a rare literary instance, the play came before the book. #fastpassfactsgiveaway

Flying through the stars is my favorite part. I know that they're stringed lights, but it's still a wonderful effect. ✨

Basically, it's a combination of low hourly ride capacity (nothing the Imagineers can do about that due to space limitations), being based on an IP that's still as popular now as it was in the 50's and being the most unique out of all the Fantasyland dark rides.

I go to Disney World at least once a year and I make sure to get a fast pass for this ride. I was met to go in June for a conference for children’s book writers and illustrators that takes place inside of Disney World. (I’m both a writer and an illustrator.) However thanks to covid 19 the conference was canceled. However I did go there is January before the virus went worldwide. Yet my favorite Disney World ride is the Haunted Mansion.

Really interesting and thorough! I have to wonder if Disney has ever considered spending the money to make a parallel track for the ride to alleviate the long lines?

The only issue with the perspective in the rides are when you see the ship's shadow which is theory should be small but because you are close to the ground it is big.

Great, informative video. When sci-fi writer and Disney friend Ray Bradbury returned from opening day at Disneyland, he sent a telegram to Disney: "I never thought I'd fly over London in a pirate ship. Thank you."

😭 When the video started to play the Soarin’ Over California soundtrack, I got tears in my eyes because I miss Soarin’ (the California version). I wish they had never changed it to Soarin’ over the World. Don’t get me wrong, the new version is still good but I just moved from California to South Carolina and I am hoping that they change it back because then every time I went on it, it would be a taste of my old home 😢

Thanks for the info! I just returned from my WDW trip and I always ask this question. I will say that the Disneyland version is superb compared to the one at the Magic Kingdom. WDW needs to update that ride a bit.

Even Peter Pan's Flight is a bit much for me with Captain Hook pleading for help as he's balancing upon rows of Tick Tock Croc's sharp teeth! Plus being up in the air makes me feel super uncomfortable! I wanted to grab on to the mast to feel secure. I stick to Small World instead! No threats at all! The Winnie the pooh ride is my second favorite.
