Why Sasuke Does Not Have Plot Armor

Many people complain that Sasuke has plot armor. That he wins fights he shouldn't. Sasuke vs Deidara, Sasuke vs Killer Bee, Sasuke vs Itachi, Sasuke vs Danzo, Sasuke vs Raikage, Sasuke vs 5 Kage, and even Sasuke vs Naruto in part 1. However, this is not the case.
Sasuke deserves all the wins he gets in the series. Kishimoto wrote his fights in a very clever way, setting up how he would eventually beat his opponents. In this video we will explore that aspect of the Naruto series and analyze Sasuke's fights.

I thought it was dumb that he chose to fight to the death for no real reason other than spite. "Oh, your the guy who killed Orochimaru? I hated that guy! How dare you kill him before me! And oh, you're Itachi's brother? Fuck Itachi, he humiliated me, and I hate you even more, so now I'm gonna kill you!" Sasuke even told him he didn't want to fight, so that was a pretty cringe hill for Deidara to die on. It would have made much more sense if they were getting in each other's way somehow, with Sasuke looking for Itachi and Deidara looking for Jinchuriki to take capture. But nah, Deidara settles for "I don't like your face and I'll nuke myself just get rid of it." 💀

Plot armor is when a character gets saved by the plot. Like when sasuke was fighting deidara and deidara used his C0 which destroys everything within a kilometer range to a molecular level but yet sasuke was able to survive it by spawning a snake and hiding in it even though he 1st-was stated to not have any chakra left and spawning manda who didn't even like him would take quite a bunch of chakra and 2nd-hiding in a snake shouldn't save you from an explosion that destroys everything to a molecular level

@@user-fr7vq7xh2i I’m aware of many of the different interpretations of plot armor. Yet, not everyone fully agrees on exactly what plot armor is. You could argue Hashirama beating Madara from fooling him with ome Wood-Clone was just Plot Armor. Point is, most people have a very subjective definition of the concept and it becomes a debate anyway.

The Sasuke vs Deidara fight is actually an amazing fight. What I didn’t like are the fights where he has the Susano'o. Nothing is more boring than when a character has an almost impenetrable shield. Imagine Sasuke vs Danzo without the Susano'o. We had moments of it that were extremely badass, but the rest was just Sasuke safe in his Susano'o.

My own definition of plot armor is whenever the author goes to illogical EXTREMES to make a character victorious in a fight. Like Naruto’s dead parents returning from whatever realm their souls reside in to help him against pain and kurama. I’m completely aware that every fight is pre determined by plot, but whenever the conclusion of the fight doesn’t make any sense I call bullshit/plot armor.

@@oxy2986yeah the problem with that is minato’s consciousness would have to be split in that moment for him to be able to rescue Naruto. Since it had previously been established that users of the reaper death seal are fated to battle eternally in the belly of the reaper. So how is minato’s consciousness inside the belly of the reaper and inside of Naruto simultaneously? Or that the minato that appeared before Naruto was some sort of sentient chakra construct that was able to converse with Naruto, re seal kurama, pop Naruto back into sage mode ect. I’m not sure all of it makes zero sense. Kishimoto just pulling whatever the hell he can out of his ass to make minato appear, and put Naruto in a position to defeat pain. Besides hagaromo, NO ONE in the series has ever crossed in between life and death using “chakra” Truly one of the worst written fights in the series, but most of Naruto’s fight are always poorly written. Like his fight with neji. Kishimoto really has a hard time coming up with a way for Naruto to win since he’s such a screw up.

I always thought a better way to handle the Kabuto fight would have been to have Itachi force him into ending the Edo Tensei out of desperation, allowing Itachi to properly pass the torch to his brother to finish the fight. The two brothers battle Kabuto together, driving him back and setting up for the kill. Kabuto calls their bluff, reminding them that they can't kill him or no one will be able to undo the Edo Tensai, but Itachi counters that Kabuto isn't going to end it whether he's alive or not, so the next best thing they can do is kill him to ensure no further reanimations can be created, and using the Sword of Totsuka, he can hunt the remaining reanimations to seal them away in time. Kabuto is driven to the brink of defeat. Knowing that he cannot defeat the two of them together and that his death is imminent, he realizes that the only way to win is to end the Edo Tensai to get rid of Itachi so that he only has to deal with Sasuke alone. In a final desperate move he releases the Edo Tensei, as Itachi had planned all along. In the final moments while Itachi is vanishing, he gives final words of encouragement to his brother and tells him that he is leaving the rest to him. Sasuke and Kabuto then engage in a final 1v1. Kabuto is stronger, but tired and weakened from the combined onslaught earlier making it a more even fight. Eventually, after a major struggle, Sasuke is able to capitalize and win the fight. Now this throws a wrench into the later episodes involving Kabuto, but the story would have been written differently with this series of events taken into account.

It wouldn't be hard tom make his amaterasu and complete susanoo abilities be enough to handle Kabuto. Especially since Kabuto could simply have been made weaker. Also, ever since Sasuke debuted an eagle summoning out of his arse in the fight against Danzou, it might be ok to have him reveal some new abillitie or jutso.

That'll never happen because there is nothing to defend there, the Anime pulled that entire fight out of its ass, including Maka suddenly also being a spirit weapon. The Anime already started deviating from the Manga by the time Arachne woke up and then just made shit up to the point it no longer had anything to do with the source material. I highly recommend reading the Manga so I'm not gonna spoil everything, but suffice it to say the manga's story not only makes more sense, it also is significantly longer. My friend and I run a "worse than Elfenlied" list in terms of Anime adaptations, and Soul Eater has a solid third place after Claymore (2nd) and Rosario + Vampire (1st)

People really criticize the Bee fight because it features teamwork. Like, what? For real? Teamwork is, like, the whole thing. It's one of the core components of the series that was set up as important within the first five chapters of the manga. It's so important in this universe that the academy puts people in teams immediately upon graduation, and being able to work together and support each other, even reluctantly, is the entire reason Kakashi passed Team 7 when he failed all the others prospective Genin he was given. This isn't Dragonball Z where everyone segregates themselves into their little 1v1's. It's even stated during the Chunin Exams that ninja fighting 1v1 basically doesn't happen, and that bears out in almost every other fight in the series, which you'll note that nobody criticizes for involving teamwork. If someone somehow managed to get as far as the Team Taka vs Killer Bee fight without understanding that core theme of the series, then I just don't even know what to say to that. That's impressive, but not in a way anyone should be proud of. (Edit: The DBZ thing is an exaggeration as teamwork does happen there, though a lot of the times it isn't used very effectively because, if we're being honest, the overall battle IQ in that series is substantially lower than in other Shonen. I only mentioned it because a lot of people go into other Shonen expecting DBZ and are mad when that's not what they get.)

First Sasuke cut off Bee's tentacle and then had to focus on removing the flames from Karin's body. That's when Bee changed places with his tentacle. How would Bee escape if Sasuke hadn't done that? You have to answer that, not me. It also makes sense thematically as it explains why Sasuke didn't save Karin against Danzo.

Most of Sasuke's fights aren't his wins though. His opponents either give Sasuke the W by killing themselves or Sasuke wins because his team helped him. Especially during the 5 kage summit arc, Obito was literally hovering over Sasuke to save him if he ever was about to die.

Deidara blowing himself up as a last resort while he was on the ground beaten against an opponent who didn't want to kill him, doesn't invalidate Sasuke's win. Tobi said Danzo was on the verge of death when Sasuke pierced him through his chest. Then he pierced through the heart when he took Karin hostage. At best he killed himself seconds before his inevitable death but even that's wrong. Tobi said the seal was set to activate when he dies.

I want to address at least the Deidara fight and the Killer Bee fight, because I do think there is some valid criticism to those two in particular. The Deidara fight doesn’t get iffy until the moment with Manda, and I think the real issue is how many hurdles had to be overcome in such a short amount of time. He had to summon him, put him under genjutsu, get eaten by him, and then undo the summon, none of which are truly instant, even if they can get done quickly. It makes it difficult to fully “suspend belief” in that moment, so in turn it makes it feel plot armor-y even though Sasuke very obviously had the upper hand throughout the fight. The Bee fight is great other than the point you brought up with Jugo. I don’t think this was THAT bad, but the fact that this ability is never seen before or after, again, makes it FEEL like plot armor, even if there is an okay explanation for it. I agree with the other two fights discussed in the video though. Sasuke’s wins are not that egregious overall.

on the deidara bit first off we don't know how long it took deidara's explosion to go off clearly there was a lot of time before the blast went off so its not out of the realm of impossibility for sasuke to summon to escape. Secondly he didn't escape the blast fully manda died because he was hit by the explosion but before it could damage them even more sasuke used the reverse summon to teleport himself and what was left of manda out of the explosion that's why when sasuke was summoned back he looked tired while Manda was burned up and died

Tbh, only fight Sasuke had plot armor in is against Deidara at the end because there's no way he summoned a snake, hopped in his mouth, and then summoned it away, all when Deidara's bomb was going off. Naruto has more plot armor than Sasuke because he was beating people he wasn't even on the lvl of. At least Sasuke won against people close to his lvl

The battle began with him summoning a snake in a blink of an eye to shield himself from sudden explosions. Earlier he not only got in between Suigetsu & Jugo right before they collided but summoned snakes to wrap around them (chapter 351 pages 10-12).

Honestly the fight with B is the only one that I find contrived because of Jugo’s healing. That power wasn’t set up beforehand, Sasuke lost his curse mark along with Orochimaru’s influence so the compatibility thing doesn’t lead to anything interesting after the fact, and the power never comes back in the rest of the manga when it could’ve been used for a self sacrifice moment in the 4th war arc. It just feels like an ass pull rather than something with a good payoff.

my only issue with the deidara fight is the time between the C0 and sasuke performing the summoning technique (which takes a good second) force manda under a genjutsu, get inside Manda's mouth and then perform a reverse summoning all before the C0 could obliterate him or manda in literal fractions of a second as that explosion was massive and would have enveloped him before he could even finish the summon let alone hop inside of manda by the time the genjutsu was placed- i agree he was the clear winner but how he got out of the c0 was contrived not by how he did it, but by how much time he had to do ALL of the necessary steps to pull that off

Sounds like typical substitution speed. The user replaces themselves with an object and transforms into it so quickly the opponent(s) don't notice. Take Kakashi at the bell test for example when he swapped with Naruto's clone. Later a log against the Demon Mist brothers. Your comment is based on real world logic. Not in story feats. Even Haku displayed this speed *without the mirriors.* Sasuke surpassed his mirror speed that same arc. Chapter 18, Haku went from sitting in a chair in front of Gato's guards, to in between them having redirected their swords in a blink of an eye. As Dygo said, Sasuke's summoning speed was shown in the beginning of the fight. Also when he got in between Suigetsu and Jugo's attacks a second before they hit each other. Summoning snakes to wrap around their bodies. Sasuke summoned Manda offscreen as the bomb was loading (manga panel zoomed in showing more light eclipsing from it). Then we just saw the aftermath.

That would have been plausible but the exact process was told to us right after it happened he 1 did the hand signs and summoned Manda seen with hand signs and just placing your hand down summoning does take a good second on its own) then used his sharingan to place Manda under genjutsu, then he had to get inside of mandas mouth and then perform ANOTHER summoning to get out of the blast, which again while the travel is instant the actions leading up to the summoning jutsu are not, it's not like it's his rinnegan ability or flying raijin where the set up is instantaneous as well he had to do perfom 2 summoning jutsu's, a genjutsu and physically climb into mandas mouth all in the fraction of a second it took the C0 to consume the area from just a few feet away- im not doubting whether he could but the amount of time he had to do ALL of that is a bit much- if we took that feat at face value and not think about it the entire powerscale for Shippuden would need to be redone as everyone would need to be significantly faster than they are to not just have sasuke blitzing everyone like he's the flash

Plot armor is a thing. its just people really overblow what is the character survival in a hard situation vs itachi pulling out a jutsu for one moment. Deidara is probably one of the best fights in terms of stragety for Sasuke and we hear his want of info to find itachi. Sharingan can only replicate moves that the user is physically capable of performing. So being able to copy Lee in his prelim match shows the gap wasn't as big as people believe. Kakashi had Sasuke replicate those moves until his body got used to them. Sharingan can share memories so he could have even shown him the match. Furthermore, we learned in the Land of Waves that chakra control can enhance speed when Sasuke focused chakra into his feet to evade Haku. Lee not being able to use chakra never took advantage. Whereas Sasuke's control grew so much that he mastered Chidori. Likewise Naruto with Rasengan.

For what it's worth, Izanagi and Izanami are siblings in Shintō mythology. Susanoo, Amaterasu, and Tsukuyomi are also deities in Japanese mythology. Given this relationship between the inspirations and origins of the 3 Mangekyou skills Itachi has, wouldn't it make sense for Izanagi to have a counterpart, purely from a mythological inspiration standpoint. Because much of Naruto takes inspiration from many places, it would be peculiar if Izanagi did not have his sister Izanami represented in a skill. The way I've always interpreted it is that Sasuke doesn't see the actual bombs. Instead he sees Deidara's charka in his body and assumes they are bombs. He also kinda confirms this with the genjustu he tries to trick Deidara with (although Deidara saw through it).

Most of Sasuke's Shippuden fights feel underwhelming and unimpressive because his motivations are trivial. Bad boy for the sake of being a bad boy. This is not a rebel without a cause, this is an edgy teenager who doesn't listen to anyone and thinks his world is the only one that exists. His character is annoying and irrational, and there's nothing redeeming about him as a human being when he spends the entire second act basically being a villain and treating everyone like shit. Yet, he's a redeemed charater at the end? Like Kabuto and Orochimaru, huh? Whatever, man. Why does he have to get saved by literally everyone every time he's one screen instead of just winning an actual battle on his own merit? It's all terrible storytelling and his character is lame and constantly feels as if he achieves NOTHING on his own. What's the bigger plot behind his getting rescued constantly? When Naruto got cornered in the Pein fight, we had an important Hinata moment. When Sasuke gets one-shot by B three times we... idk, get to see that Suigetsu is cool? What does this do for the relationship with other characters? What's the point? To make sure Sasuke makes it to the end to get stupid god powers? Unimpactful, I'd say. Sasuke's fights suck because there's no emotional value or significance to them. His lame emo band teams are too new for the audience to care about them and they end up feeling like accessories to Sasuke rather than actual characters. He was not compelling as an anti-villain; that's the whole problem. He would've been more interesting as an antihero but Kishimoto decided Naruto was becoming the Sharingan Show and he never got to dye his hair and wear eyeliner as a kid, I guess.

The only bullshit plot armor of Sasuke I can think of was the end of the Sasuke and Deidara battle. There was no way Sasuke could summon Manda, use a genjutsu, on him, hide in his stomach, and then reverse summon him to survive the giant explosion. Yes, you do give decently good reasons but, I'm sorry, it's jumping the shark more than anything else Sasuke has done in the series. Nice on paper, bad execution. There could've been a better way to escape, maybe have Orochimaru summon a white snake to reverse summon him by biting into Sasuke and doing it instead, hinting that Orochimaru might not be fully gone, hinting at his resurfacing at the end of the Sasuke vs Itachi battle. Or maybe have Obito save him using Kamui, hinting that Tobi was more than it seemed and showing he had an interest in Sasuke over Deidara.

First of all a definition of Plot Armor provided by TV Tropes rather then the one DygoKnight invents to setup his strawman argument: "Plot Armor is when a main character's life and health are safeguarded by the fact that he's the one person (or one of several) who can't be removed from the story. Therefore, whenever Bob is in a situation where he could be killed (or at the least very seriously injured), he comes out unharmed with no logical, In-Universe explanation." Now Tvtropes provided example of why Sasuke meets this criteria: "Sasuke Uchiha has a tendency to get into fights that are beyond his ability to win, only to suddenly demonstrate a new power that had never been seen or even hinted at before, or for another villain to bail him out at the last second. And then there was the time in which Sasuke evaded certain death from an explosion by a combination of two moves that each had immense chakra requirements, despite the reason that he was in danger in the first place being that he had already used up almost all his chakra, and did so in an implausibly short amount of time." That last example is in reference to Sasuke's fight with Deidara which is easily one of the biggest asspulls in all of manga/anime. Sasuke is explicitly stated to have no chakra, then proceeds to summon a kaiju and brainwashes said kaiju to evade an explosion at it's epicenter that's big enough to kill the kaiju by hiding in it's mouth in seconds. The flaw in Dygo's argument is that he tries to use his own definition of what Plot Armor is. He argues every character has plot armor because all characters live as long as the author wants but that misses the point of the criticism. All because the author provides an explanation for how a character wins a fight does not mean that they won the fight in a way that is satisfactory to the reader. It does not mean that the fight was won in a way that maintains suspension of disbelief. The plot armor critique is that Sasuke's victories feel contrived because he seldom wins due to training or even suffers a phyriic victory like Naruto does. Naruto right up until the last story arc either had to go out of his way to learn a new ability, use a clever tactic he invented on the spot or went tailed beast which at the very least runs to risk of him releasing the kyubi. Sasuke just gets a new power up, sometimes coming out of nowhere. This is actually lampshaded in universe when Sasuke summons a Hawk in one fight and Obito openly wonder when the hell he made a contract with such a summon. Dygo's argument is not even consistent. How can Sasuke deserve a win if he only won because the author dictated it? To say Sasuke deserved to win implies an attitude that he did something in-universe to deserve that win. That it's not just a plot contrivance by the author. To say Sasuke deserves anything in the setting it to acknowledge the possibility of a scenerio where he did not deserve the win.

Furthermore, when he was confirmed to be out he not only remained standing, but easily jumped dozens of feat to the top of the pillar for Kirin. How? He never shocked himself. Lightning can cause paralysis (chapter 308 page 9). And his speed feats are consistent. Like the beginnjng of the fight where he summoned a snake to shield himself from an ambush in a blink of an eye and when he not only got inbetween Suigetsu and Jugo right before they hit each other, but summoned two snakes to wrap around them (chapter 351 pages 10-12). Meanwhile Sage Mode is introduced long after Jiraiya (unlike MS with Itachi) with Naruto getting it just 30 chapters later, and Baryon Mode had no build up. Not dying is something people tend to find very good, so they prepare accordingly to avoid death.

The issue for me has always been that Sasuke got so many of the “wins” aka survivals handed to him. Yeah, characters get saved, but do they get saved as much as Sasuke? And narratively most other characters get saved because they’re trying to help or protect people by fighting a stronger opponent, so they’re actually deserving of being saved, unlike Sasuke who gets into all these situations because he’s attacking people for himself. “No, he does it for his clan” oh yeah; you mean the clans that’s dead? So yeah, he does it all for himself. And it’s not even for more important to him like Itachi, because Itachi literally didn’t want him to do stuff like this, and he does it anyway. As for Deidara, he won that fight, I’d argue Manda should have been gone along with Sasuke in the explosion that “destroys everything in a 10 kilometer radius” even if they only got a portion of it, but to be fair I can’t remember if that’s just a Deidara statement or corroborated elsewhere, so it gets a pass. Sasuke didn’t win his fight with be in terms of battle or objective, Sasuke wanted B and got his ass kicked 3 times in a row, B wanted to be left alone, but he also wanted a chance to leave the village, which he got by leaving a clone to get captured by Sasuke. And of course Karin’s healing of Sasuke makes sense, healing is her thing, you know who’s thing it isn’t, God dam Jugo. It’s a 100% last minute change made to save Sasuke. And yes, the fight was used to show Sasuke connection to team 4 and his new team, but arguing “Sasuke could have just dodged the attack” dosent mean he didn’t get saved by a change to the narrative, aka plot armor. It’s like saying “Madara could have just dodged Zetsu” it dosent matter what COULD have happened, Sasuke could have also stayed in the village and gotten stronger, but did he do that? All that matters is that it happened, and it got resolved through convenience and unplanned changes to the narrative, that’s plot armor if ever it existed. And yeah, Sasuke being tested by Obito, that was his plan, and while him surviving the kages isn’t really plot armor, it is convenient that he stupid decision to attack the Kage didn’t result in his immediate and deserved death. “But Obito told him to” don’t make me bring WW2 war crimes into this, you know that’s argument is completely bogus. If you tell an a give teenager to go fight someone, and they do it, yeah you propagated the fight, but it’s not like it’s not also the angsty teens fault, he had the ability to say no, he wanted to do it, so he did it. But Sasuke did actually win his fight with Donzo legitimately too, just like Deidara.

Sasuke has the most fights. Even more than Naruto so naturally he's going to face more challenges than others. Zabuza made a statement saying shinobi live on the edge of life and death. So even in the setting Sasuke's survival isn't unusual in his field. "Others are deserving to be saved", your personal barometer is irrelevant. Point is Sasuke formed a team to recieve help and wow, they actually helped instead of standing around doing nothing. Bee tried and failed to kill them several times with moves he didn't know they would survive. Then ran away low on stamina stating Sasuke was probably the toughest opponent he ever fought. Painting this as Bee just used them to go on vacation is disingenuous. Even more with him stating the tentacle trick was something he thought off in the spur of the moment (chapter 419 page 14 & 17). "Jugo's heal was a last minute change" - How do you know? Cause his every ability wasn't said beforehand? Kishimoto could just not have Sasuke be hit. You guys speak as if he's forced to do things then scrambles for ways to get out the situation & ignore how Sasuke's nerfed. Lost the Curse Mark, didn't copy over 1000 jutsu like Kakashi, nor gain EMS right after Itachi died. Obviously so he wouldn't be too strong. "His attack on the Kage" - He was only after Danzo. They attacked him after Obito and Zetsu ruined his plan to remain hidden and confront Danzo on the way back to Konoha. They infiltrated to identify him so Karin could track his chakra.

Trying to disprove the concept of plot armor makes me think you're just dumb or baiting. Plot armor is when a character who's abilities give them almost no chance of victory against the abilities of their opponent wins. That's the whole point. Often this means the stronger character will break character just to lose, like they were geniuses in every fight before this and now they lose to a simple trick.

But Trying to erase the Term Plot Armour is not a good way to try and convince us. Now, there are fights that are definitely plot armour for Sasuke, Killer Bee for example, Killer Bee put him down twice during this fight, if anyone else had their trachea crushed with the Lariat would mean their death. He was stabbed in eight different places in his neck. But he walked out of this. That is the very definition of plot armour because he should not have survived that and he appears special when compared to other characters.

I agree with most of the video, however I think izanami makes all sense, it's an evolution of tsukuyomi and it works like it's brother in the sense that it deactivates the eye that used it and although the process of it being executed and what happens in that weird dream world are scuffed I don't think its irrealistic for Itachi to have this type of jutsu
