Why Scary Girl Does Not Work (Total Drama Island 2023)

With the introduction of a new season I was very excited to have new and refreshing characters. However one character in particular was very disappointing.

I think Scary Girl does work. This season is supposed to capture younger Gen Z stereotypes/culture. I think of Scary Girl herself as the embodiment of Gen Z's very morbid sense of humor hence why she's popular and resonates with a lot of viewers.

I agree with you sort of. Scary Girl is an embodiment of a more dreadful character who separates herself from the cast (for obvious reasons.) My problem is she does NOT do anything with that. Like she speaks more than she does. Still great observation though! A character who actually worked with a morbid sense of humor would be Noah.

Because they obviously need to focus most of the attention on characters that carry out the season long plots and story. So characters like her kinda get put on the back burner a bit until the plot needs them or it's time to eliminate them. Especially since they're trying to fit 16 characters into 13 episodes.

As the seasons went on, the level of bizarre has always risen, with mutant monsters, the artificial island and the characters... over the top. Scary Girl is absolutely over the top, but in my opinion it works, she's basically Izzy disguised as Harley Queen, they share the same characteristics. the only difference between the two is the fact that despite everything Izzy had rare moments of "normal" interaction with the other campers. But.. maybe in the future with the new season Scary Girl will have a chance to be explored better.

I never really liked Izzy either but she was a decent comic relief character and was there to break up more tense moments and she also had tiny bits of development. Scary Girl feels like a one trick pony whos trick wasn't even that good to begin with. I honestly just see her as fan bait.

My main issue was that she stayed the creepy girl during her entire time on the show I was hoping she would get some development towards the latter half of the season because keeping as a scary girl for that long would get old quickly but instead they eliminated her before it got too old hopefully she lasts longer and gets some development next season still liked her

That would ruin the point of her character. I mean, she's literally called "Scary Girl" instead of using her name Lauren. She's a joke character akin to Izzy where she's not meant to make it far, she just exists to break up the tension and realism.

Not to mention she had her own character design unique to her. Scary Girl is fan bait meant to capitalize off the same off attention Gwen got in the early seasons.

Honestly I have the longer view in mind you know how scary girl started developing a crush on Damien towards the end of her run on the show I hope they explore that more in season 2 And tones down her crazy a little bit she doesn't become sane but her insane and most wacky antics are toned down a bit she becomes a little more down-to-earth and focused on winning while still being an absolute nut case at the same time I think they wrote her as crazy as she was now to sort of built her up later and she is hilarious since at least with her there's no fart and she does feel lightning rod for how I feel about the world right And her one liners are for the most part hilarious

I ship Priya with Damien. But Scary Girl might have a crush on him - the way she acts, it seems like that's the kind of way she would treat someone if she had a crush. She seems attracted to the way Damien reacts when he's scared.

Hi! I just wanna start this off with I respect your opinion and viewpoint on her, here's just my take on why I think she works fantastically! In a cast like this, you're going to need a character to break up the realism a bit. And, they do that by adding someone so off the wall it's jarring. Scary Girl is meant to be the odd character out and she's not meant to fit in with the cast! Much like somebody like Izzy or Dakotazoid. They're very outlandish in their casts and that's why people enjoy them so much! Characters like Izzy and Scary Girl are mainly meant for the comedy aspects of the game, they're never designed to make final 4, 3, 2, 1 etc, they're mainly here to balance out the realist characters early on to make the episodes feel more relaxed and funny! Much like Axel in a sense. I completely see your point of her being the odd character, but unlike a season such as all stars or pahkitew, she's not meant to be taken seriously like mal or scarlett, and that's why she works! She's a joke character and the writers know it. Whilst in early episodes we have the important plotlines going on, like Bowie, Millie & Priya, Chase & Emma etc, characters like Scary Girl are there to fill the comedy void so the serious storys can breathe, and then when the show needs to get 100% serious they boot these characters who aren't as prominent in the overarching storys of the season, for example Izzy in TDI, Dakotazoid in ROTI, and the vegans in RR. They're designed to go slightly early and i think we should look it from the perspective of, yes, this character isn't supposed to fit in!

Honestly best response I've seen so far. And yeah like Izzy she was never suppose to make it far. But... Like I said she's SUPPOSE to be a standout character but many of her fellow campers have the same skill set she does. Making her feel a lot less special and a cheap attempt to make a fan favorite character by copying previous designs. In fact many characters this season felt like lazy merges of previous characters. Axel (Eva/Shawn), Caleb (Justin), I even saw some compelling parallels of Ripper to Duncan. That being said she fails as a stand out character like Izzy cause she's not that special compared to everyone else. There was no one like Izzy in the original but in the new season there are many people who share Scary Girls abilities. Also she was not very funny a lot of what she said was really corny like talking about Damian screaming.

I respect that completely, i think scary girls stand out factor isn't meant to necessarily be her skill set or gameplay, more so her comedy, which was meant to be as corny as possible and it's truly just subjective depending on what you find entertaining. Personally, i think a lot of this cast can be considered down to earth characters! Even someone like ripper has his funny moments. Scary Girl is the one they put heavy emphasis on. My theory about her is she's a character created to kinda poke fun at pahkitew and those characters, her name literally being 'Scary Girl' and her outfit, voice and duologue being very one note, but I'd argue that really works in her favor! Also, yes whilst characters are merges of previous characters i specifically agree with what you said about axel. Though, i actually disagree with what you say about scary girl not standing out against the other bold personalities, because yes whilst we had our overtly obvious stereotypes with axel ripper and caleb, they're not stereotypes which are necessarily unrealistic, because axel rarely even talks about zombies it's just survival. I think that, for me, if I looked at every character, scary girl would be the standout from a design and voice perspective because she's so so so turned up to 100% and on full speed it works amazingly! For me at least, whilst characters like axel and ripper had their down moments and moments of actual character, scary girl was always.. Just that, a scary girl. And that's why I believe she does stand out!

As we watched the show we could tell Gwen was a normal girl who kinda felt like an outcast and wanted to make friends and pretty nice and smart, up until they ruined her character a bit in world tour and all of all stars. When I comparing her to Gwen I did it in a writing standpoint. I was referring to how soon fans instantly picked up on Gwen after seeing the first season. I think the writers of the show just wanted another "Gwen" and so made another goth look alike. But they did not want to be too obvious so they just meshed her with Izzy. You are totally right I do not think Scary Girl and Gwen and similar, I was saying the writers just lazily threw together a goth looking character cause they needed promotion material.

Crimson actually made me laugh a few times and was a better character all around without being given absurd abilities to make up for a lack of personality. I compare Lauren and Gwen together not because their personalities are similar but because the producers of the show used Lauren as a promotion piece. They knew she would draw eyes to her for her stand out design.

This is why I love the old TD writing, everyone was genuine. I can give my interpretation to why Scary Girl is like this but it's never talked about on-screen, she just acts confusingly weird. You can't even measure if she's a good TD competitor. I'm actually satisfied with her being eliminated to Ripper, who feels like a real person.

Sorry for late response. So S1-S3 were the most popular and seen as the best era of total drama. During that time there were absolutely unrealistic things happening in the show but everything was mostly grounded. IE characters weren't doing completely out of pocket things like Lindsey lifting boulders. So certain characters just coming out of no where with special unseen abilities to me at least is just lack of foreword thinking and cheap writing. NOW, lol Lauren is meant to have special abilities, my problem with her is that every other girl in the show has abilities similar to hers. I showed clips in the video to back my claims. She does not feel unique or different if everyone around her also sports her same over the top skill set.

I honestly loved her a lot, and I agree that it would've probably have gotten old, but I would've honestly preferred ripper being voted off instead of her in that skull challenge. Her idea of ramming the ship and ending in a tie made me think she would've had a bigger role as another smart character but I guess one of the writers had a fart fetish

I only have one problem with Lauren as a character, but it’s a pretty big one. I think she’s exactly what most of us expected her to be. The over-the-top, zany freakshow who only lasts a few episodes before they get booted because the story is taking a more serious direction, and she just wouldn’t fit. While that’s all fine and good, I think most of us were just really hoping the writers would’ve subverted our expectations and actually attempt to give depth to her character archetype, but that didn’t end up happening. So while Lauren isn’t a bad character, she could’ve been a lot more than what she was.

I liked Lauren well enough and thought she was funny but I was glad that she got eliminated early because she really only was the one joke and it'd have gotten old if she lasted any longer. I am very glad to see someone with a similar opinion. Throughout the season, I really felt like Scary Girl was a one-trick pony. And that her whole character is "She is called Scary Girl and her personality is that she is a scary girl". I can understand people who simply see her as a fun, secondary comic relief. But her kind of humour is just not for me.

Very good and spot on analysis. Scary Girl remains my favorite of the 4th generation cast simply because I share her love of the macabre. I do wish she wasn’t a wild card to her team and placed a higher priority on the competition over indulging herself on her sadism. Pahkitew Island was my least favorite season for multiple reasons, the biggest one being how gimmicky and one-note most of the contestants were. It was like the antithesis to Island (2007) as nearly all of the 1st generation were extremely relatable. I understand my favoritism for Scary Girl would make me come off as hypocritical, but like I mentioned earlier, I love horror-based gimmicks. That’s my one singular exception.😂 Hopefully, Scary Girl undergoes some character growth in the upcoming season. I’d like for her to have strong bonds with Priya and Damien. Plus, she is one skilled badass!

I think that the main reason why her character actually works is that she is the only crazy one character in the season. The reason why pakithew island's cast didn't work wasn't only because they were crazy and dumb but because most of them were like that. There was more crazy and weird characters than normal ones. Scary girl on the other hand seems unique because she is the most quirky of all of them. Also I think that her yandere personality is entrtaining and enjoyable to watch enough to fit into universe without cringing audience like pakithew did. She was crazy because that was her purpose instead of max and leonard which I don't even know why they existed and what purpose they had

Tbh I feel like the season was just way too short to justify me making judgements on a characters so soon. Like with TDI there was literally double the episodes than this season and the large cast definitely helped give more screen time to certain characters. I feel like if this season had a larger player count and there was more time for other characters to stand out/interact with each other, we would definitely feel different about a lot of them including scary girl. I enjoyed her being funny every now and then but I can't really say if I dislike or like her y'know? She just never really had moments that helped to contribute or build onto her character. I just hope they flesh out some of the characters in the next season tbh. A few of them could definitely use it. Great video, though!

Longer seasons and bigger casts should def be readded. The bigger casts allow multiple story lines to go on at once. There of course will always be cannon fodder characters but that just leaves other more important characters time to develop. For example in season one there was Gwen/Trent, Duncan/Courtney, HeatherVLeshawna, Geoff/Bridgette, Heather alliance, etc, etc going on all at once whilst the main plot of the show was going on. Def miss that most about bigger seasons.

Another reason about why i disliked her its because of how she always seems to act so maniatic but not in any kind of friendly way, Izzy was crazy yeah but she was friendly and a compulsive liar, scary girl on the other hand is just supposed to like spooky things and put on a rage mode like a little child about the more dumb comments people made about her, i dont think her character is all bad but i think if she didnt care about what her teammates thought about her and showed more than what she told, i think she could have been pretty good atleast better than ripper

I have to disagree. I think scary girl works. She wouldnt have worked in a case like pahkitew where a lot of character are very weird, but i think she is a nice adition to que cast. And for what i heard and seen in reaction videos, many people enjoyed her, as well. That being said, her gimmick would have been boring if it was pushed for much long without development, so i think she was adequately booted. But still i get the hype behind her and think she is good, even if she is a bit overratted.

People enjoy her cause she has a cool design and people just like chaotic characters. But in a show like this what purpose does she serve ? Slight comedy sure cause she creeps the contestants out and we don’t know what to expect but she won’t go any far if she’s not actually playing the game. Izzy worked because yes she was intense but she made relationships with the campers, played the game and actually a strategic moves to get further in the game. Lauren is just “I like hearing people scream. this is fun hehehe”

Not finalist material, but for a character that is a early boot she did her job, made a impression on people and was able to take some laughts. I think she did her job masterfully. Also, she is able to stategize, like in the boat episode where she said to ram the ship to cause a tie. So i think she just does things her way. And it works! For me it works, at least.

Most people have not seen the show yet unfortunately, once the show becomes more widely available for everyone I think some people will start changing their minds on her. That being said you said she did good for being voted out so early and I would heavily disagree. The writers needed her to get voted early or else she would grow stale real fast.

She works really well for me. Every character is quite normal and realistic. You need that switch up in a show to keep the comedy. It's good that she didn't last super long because then it would not work. If she stayed longer she should have had more development so right now I think she is REALLY good for this season. A sterotype character is also good for a show. Plus it works with the humour of this generation

She lost the challenges for her team twice, displays no interesting abilities unique only to her, and just seems to be a gimmick. Also people gave Mal tons of criticism for being too on the nose and scary girl is basically him but less intelligent. We shouldn't play favorites in my opinion between characters.

Is Scary Girl a bad character? well... no! For 2 reasons: -Every character in any story is created with a purpose, a role. Lauren's role is to be a gimmick and does she succeed? Since most people find it funny, the answer is yes - Many people say that Lauren would fit better into the cast of Pahkitew. This is true, but for this very reason she would end up being one of the many caricatures of that cast, whereas in the reboot cast she is the only exaggerated character, and this makes her unique compared to the others. I know that TD is a series based on adolescent stereotypes, but it is also true that since the first cast there has always been one character who is more exaggerated than all the others... in that case Izzy! It's not as exaggerated as Scary Girl, but in terms of character concepts they're the same. so it doesn't even conflict with the original TD formula. It wasn't like creating a semi-believable world where at a certain point the islands become radioactive, there are mutant monsters or mechanical islands. In conclusion Scary Girl is an excellent, fun character consistent with the world of TD

With Izzy in my opinion she was funny, because yes, she wasn’t saying, but it was more so for comic relief also, even though she wasn’t seen, it was clearly in mind she wouldn’t cross. With scary girl, I don’t know if it’s just me, but I got the impression that she needs to be watched like a hawk because of how she acts. I could be wrong though.

Scary girl is a love letter to anime culture as a whole, unanimously. Its not a subjective take. She was curated to be as likeable as possible by anybody who has genuinely been around anime culture Youre entitled to your own opinion, but i think this girl is one of the best and funniest characters that TDI has ever created. However, here is some perspective from my side Every tdi character is a parody of an archetype in popular media, and lauren fills hers better than anybody in the two reboot seasons.
