As a retired 28 year LEO for a very large Western sheriff’s department, if I know that my family or I are in imminent danger, the very first weapon I will retrieve is a 12-gauge pump shotgun loaded with buckshot. Nothing has the close range brutality and lethality of a shotgun.

I disagree. A shotgun can be, is a, has been for years, a very effective tool for home protection. Recoil is not that bad, especially in semi autos and if using a double barrel, pump, ect, a good recoil pad along with reduced recoil ammo, recoil is not much. Can also use a 20 gauge if a 12 is too much. A shotgun doesn't need a lifetime of training to be effective with it. An hour here and there once a week or every few days, the user will be effective enough to protect themselves in their home. I haven't seen or heard of not one self defence case in response to a home invasion in which the shotgun failed. If so, please provide some sources. Sure a shotgun isn't for everybody, but can't the same be said about every firearm? Not to mention, a shotgun offers more versatility to the user that fits their criteria for their situation, more so than any pistol, AR-15, PCC, ect, ever could. As far as lethality goes, ain't nobody taking a load of buckshot to the chest and walking away or even making it to the next room unless they had armor on. I don't care what firearm a person prefers to have or use, but becoming familiar with it and knowing how to use it is personal responsibility that should be done as a responsible gun owner, seems like common sense to me. Lastly, Paul Harrell demonstrated why shotguns don't suck for home defense, and out of all the gun tubers on here that said otherwise, he was the only to prove so with demonstration, data, experience, and common sense knowledge.

One thing that really helped me manage 12 gauge recoil was learning to properly shoulder the gun, i shoot my AR a lot and i like to put the stock in my shoulder pocket a bit high up because it doesnt have hardly any recoil and it allows me to not have to bend my neck so far down. When i first shot my 12 gauge the same way it kicked the piss out of me and i wondered how you can manage the recoil, then i found youre supposed to put the stock on your peck muscle and once i started shouldering the gun on my peck instead of my shoulder the recoil became so much easier to absorb.

And their arms are shorter than mine and weaker so they short stroke the pump shotgun often. So I chose the 9mm pcc as the family gun for home defense and fun plinking as well as hunting. We each have our own pistols. I travel a lot for work at least one week per month out of state living out of hotels. So they home without me and I’m glad they have the pcc and their pistols

Besides, if flash is a worry and losing night vision, keep the non aiming eye closed while firing, you still have night vision, the military has taught this for decades. For a first choice I would agree for elderly/smaller people a standard 16" AR would be a good choice. A pistol is IMO not a good choice for a first time shooter either. Much harder to shoot than a long gun, going to likely take multiple shots on target to stop the threat too. Long guns are easier to point shoot, and #1 buckshot is one of the highest 1 shot man stoppers we can get. That said it ALL comes down to training. If you don't train with a pistol or a long gun both aren't going to do you any favors.

I can see your point but at 2am when I can't find my glasses I'll take a three inch wide pattern of fifteen pellets roughly the size of a 9mm per trigger pull versus my handgun with night sights. Back in 1978 a man came to our front door with a 38 spl intent on doing us harm. He was drunk and at the wrong house. Momma let both barrels from an Ithaca SxS 10ga (buckshot) through the door at him at about three feet from the muzzle. She missed him by a few inches but he ran so fast that he ran past his car and had to run back to it in order to get away. He didn't know that it was both barrels and he wasn't waiting for the "other barrel". My dad bought me my first shotgun that day. Every single person in both my direct and extended family knows how to use a shotgun. It's the obvious choice for any of us.

You're right about a few things but wrong on so many more things. 1. they make smaller shotguns that work better for people that can't handle the recoil of the 12ga, like 20ga. 2. At 15 yards, blast radius from my mossberg 590a1 is only about 2-3 inches, not torso sized. at 100 yards it may be torso sized. at 50 yards, I can make a 3-5 inch hole with double aught buck. 3. most pistols only create a single wound channel and only stand a 20% chance of creating a fatal injury. a rifle may require 4-5 single shots to stop an attacker. but a shotgun gives you 9-12 9mm wound channels in a single shot, more likely stopping or fatality wounding your attacker. this gives the defender, with the shotgun, the absolute 1 shot stop, while also giving you the advantage of creating more damage in a single trigger pull, than any other weapon!

I have never understood this. 1) I'm not counting on a sound. Only idiots are depending on a sound. Why are we responding to obvious idiots? 2) Again, why are we responding to idiots. But the point stands that a 3" pie plate is much much larger than a what 1/4in projectile? I don't have to have the best aim to use it. 3) Ammo type is going to depend on what your property looks like and what you want to do. I live in an apartment, it is NOT acceptable to penetrate 3-15 sheetrock walls as a rifle or pistol would. I will stick with paul harrell and his heavy birdshot for power without over penetrating. Are you seriously saying bird shot WITHIN 30 ft (no more than 10 in my case) is going to be ineffective? Exactly what do you think you will be fighting for home defense? SWAT? A 3" pie of bird shot at 30FT is going to be devastating to damn near anything. Just the kinetic energy in that little area is going to be traumatizing. No, and I know you know this. Bird shot meant for 1 PELLET of that shot to take down a small bird, or turkey...wtv. 4) well if we are just talking idiots not knowing how to operate their tool, then that goes for anything with anyone. I watched someone load their 9mm to capacity with all the rounds facing backward in the mag...seriously...again with the idiots. And I'm sure no one ever has failed to insert their AR mag properly...smdh... 5) you say "big fireball" and "loud concussion" as if that's a bad thing. I want literally everyone in the neighborhood to know that someone is breaking into my place. Also, that's why I have the flashlight attached. 6) No, I'm not reloading. Firstly because the KSG has 15 rnds...Secondly because if I'm reloading, something is terribly wrong and it's rifle time. Seriously, what is with the shotgun hatefest in youtube? Why aren't we talking about, "Hey, let's say you only have a shotgun for home defense, for whatever reason. Here are some great ways to maximize it!"

If I toss out 5-8 12GA rounds (depending on weapon & if one is racked to start) and the person either isn't hit or is still coming at me I am the victim of a mob hit, not a home invasion.

I respectfully do not agree with this... shotguns are thee best home defense weapons. And 12 gauge isnt the only gauge out ther...the only thing i agree with is the spread. Not alot of spread but doesnt mean shotguns arent easy to aim... but no handgun nor rifle cant compete with lets say a 00buck which are about 9. 30cal lead balls flying around 1300 fps...

I'm going to have to disagree with this one, it's an amazing home defence option as long as you learn to handle it, as you should with ANY home defense weapon. It might not be a great choice for the 92 year old lady who can barely lift it but it's one of the best home defence options out there.

Myth 1: Applies to any gun and has nothing to do with a problem with a shotgun specifically Myth 2: Again an ideology that has nothing to do with the shotgun itself and is overcome with education Myth 3: Can be dealt with buy purchasing a semi auto shotgun, which is recommended. As racking under stress can induce malfunctions Reason 1: Use a 20 GA and birdshot for lighter recoil. Birdshot should be used anyways to prevent over penetration. Reason 2: Most defensive shootings last 2 or 3 shots. A 7 round holding shotgun is plenty. Buy a shotgun for home defense people. With the right round, birdshot, you don't risk over penetrating and killing you child, wife, or neighbor like has happened plenty times with pistol or AR rounds.

A hunting rifle for average people who are not obsessed with safe weapons is an all-in-one, for example the Mossberg maverick 88 home defense with 2 barrels, an 18 and a half inch and a 28 vented, a all included without breaking the bank and being able to think about something else, smoke detector, fire extinguisher, radio in the event of an electrical outage lots of life things etc..., I live in the countryside, each has its own situation in the city in new- York its other things, everyone adapts to their environment, ready-made recipes do not exist.

Working the action will tell Intruders your location and that is foolish.

Its a lousy choice for newbies who dont train and dont know the difference between a mag and a clip. I also might add if you need more rounds use mini shells, buy an adapter if you need. Last if you pull the trigger 7-8 time into the threat the jury 'may' not like that, however with buckshot you only pulled the trigger once.

People with small frames, people who are recoil sensitive, people that live in apartments maybe not so much. For people that are not recoil sensitive, live in a home style that would benefit from the system, and are willing to learn the weapon? I think you're going to be *very* hard pressed to find a better tool. 9 to 15 pellets of 00 buck is heap big "you're entering the forever box now" medicine.

I disagree I use a 870, the recoil is nothing with a BlackHawk Knoxx Specops Stock which mitigates recoil, flash at night is not an issue as I have a very bright light and if it is dark I’ll be using the light, I have a Velcro side saddle with six shells on the side of the gun and the stock has a five shell holder. Practice is vital as is patterning your gun with the ammo. I also had my barrel done by Vang Comp and at house distances it shoots buckshot like a slug. There just is no greater firepower for a homeowner and no gun that actually has stopping / knockdown power but a shotgun.

I don't necessarily agree that shotguns are terrible for home defense because at the end of the day, everyone's circumstances are different, therefore everyone usually has to pick the right tool for their circumstances, with a shotgun being one of them. Inside a house in the hands of someone that's proficient with a shotgun, it is excellent. However, I do agree with a majority of the video that the shotgun (especially the pump shotgun) is overhyped and oftentimes have myths and tall tales making the shotgun into something it is not; it is not a guaranteed one shot stop 100% of the time, it is not something you can forgo the principles of aiming and still hit a target because of shot spread, racking the pump is just as likely to advertise to the bad guy where you are and that you are one shell less than what you had before instead of deter them, and its not so simple and reliable that you can hand it to anybody with little to no experience and expect them to perform well right out of the gate (though that really applies to any firearm). Newbies short stroking the pump on a shotgun is one of the most common mistakes I've seen, right up there next to riding the slide forward on a pistol, failing to fully cycle a lever on a lever action, or riding the bolt/charging handle forward on a semi-auto rifle or shotgun, because many newbies don't understand that you don't need to baby a firearm; putting some force into operating it isn't going to break it, regardless of what type it is.

A lot what you mentioned is true. However, that’s why you go to a range and shoot a shotgun. You must be trained and prepared on how to use it. Many people buy a shotgun for home defense and never fire it in their entire life. Not good in a home invasion scenario. The first shot could be the only one you get off. You must make it count.

Mossberg 590 A1 SPX nine 2 3/4" rounds. One 00 Buck blast equivalent to 4-8 9mm rounds. Bird shot is lethal under 20 feet...will explode a skull. Plus birdshot will not penetrate drywall whereas virtuallly anything else will go through multiple layers of drywall. There is a reason police breach a house with shotguns. Nothing is more lethal at close range. I think biggest issue is maneuverability inside a house, but if you are statyionary, set up behind cover, would be ideal

I agree with all your reasons, and have one more. The insanely loud sound a shotgun would make if you fired it inside of a house. There is no way I would fire a shotgun inside the house, even with hearing protection. It would likely blow your eardrums out. If you survive, you will be deaf for the rest of your life. And if someone has invaded your home, and is inside, you certainly don't want to be wearing hearing protection. In a situation like that you need your hearing more than ever. But there are also issues with rifles. If you live in the city, on a city street, or if you have family members in other rooms throughout the house, the last thing you want is an AR/AK, or any high powered rifle. They are also loud, and that bullet traveling at 3000+ feet per second is going top go through walls in your house, and could wind up hitting someone in the house across the street. And a .22 rifle is kind of pointless, due to it's size. Very hard to maneuver inside a house at night. My choice is a 9mm semi auto handgun, with hollow point ammo. In my case, a Glock 19, with a 33 round magazine. I am NOT a Glock fan. I bought it because at the time, it was the only thing available you could get a 33 round magazine for. I keep it laying on a nightstand beside the bed, with another loaded 33 round magazine next to it. 9mm hollow points are about the least likely round out there to wind up going somewhere you don't want it to. And you have 33 of them, so if you do miss, or there is more than one invader, you should still have enough ammo. If not (and I don't think that's likely) you can drop the mag, and shove in the other one you stuck in your pocket when you picked up the gun really fast, even in the dark. I also have a light on it, but you need to use that only when you need it. When you need to see your target, not to give away your position. Once you have turned on the light, you just lost your night vision, so you better hope it stays on. I would put a suppressor on it, but don't want to deal with the unconstitutional ATF. I recommend one if you don't have that issue.
@KH-rt3ef
@KH-rt3ef 2 жыл бұрын
9mm hollow points will probably penetrate several walls, unless they’re brick or stone. Dr. David Allen Grossman interviewed several LE officers and combat veterans for a couple books he’s written, and something weird happens pretty often when we’re stressed and we knowingly discharge a gun: the sound of the shot is muted, as if anticipating the sound under enough stress causes the ear to mechanically protect itself. Hearing is not the only sense that gets protected or is enhanced during a fight, and especially not one where grave injury is at stake. Many hunters for years have fired unprotected from enclosures, and retain their hearing… Personally I would only want a suppressor on a firearm that meets certain size criteria for spacing’s sake in this application; the muzzle should remain oriented in an advantageous angle, ideally all the time while room clearing. Suppressors add barrel length, which can take away from that ability.

still, ~ 6 .36 caliber led balls flying your way without body armour is a very bad combination. 12 GA buckshot in a 18" pump shotgun, or even in a 14" setup is a very capable setup for home defense. talking about recoil, there's enough solutions for that, like porting the barrel. sure, if you live in a very open area, where your home defense includes beyond 25 yard situations, I would choose a "rifle" too. especially if you run around in a 15k nvg setup, you sure can afford something more then a 500 USD pump shotgun for home defense...

A 12 gauge was my first home defense weapon. But very quickly I discovered it was entirely too long and unwieldy inside a home. Sure, it can still be used as a home defense weapon by all means, but it's not the best. I went and picked up a pistol with a light as my primary home defense weapon. The light weight, higher capacity, quick reloads, easy maneuverability, easy storage, easier for my wife to control and shoot accurately are huge wins over a shotgun that she shoots once and says, "never again!"

My Mossberg came with an 18.5 inch slugster barrel. I'm small, the stock has been cut down to fit me. It's very easy to maneuver in my home. On a separate note, I know of two people that have been shot with birdshot and have nothing to show but scars. Any firearm that you keep for home defense should be handled and used every now and then. Things like "recoil" will not be a factor when your life is in danger, much like I don't hear my rifles when I hunt. This isn't a very good video. For every "con" mentioned there is an option to dispell that concern. I keep more than one tool at my disposal in my bedroom, I consider my shotgun my most lethal option for the scenarios most likely to present themselves in my home/neighborhood. One must consider that there are different threats that require different tools. A random robbery or home invasion is different than when there is a period of civil disobedience like we saw during the summer of love. It's a shame we have to consider these things but this is where we are now. I hope to never have to use any of my self defense tools but I can't imagine going to sleep at night knowing I have nothing, that someone can enter my home and harm me or my loved ones while I just sit there. Having a tool and knowing how to use it is more important than which tool you choose, there are a lot of self defense options, the important thing is to know how to use that tool if God forbid you have to, and to be willing to use it if that time comes.

@@gitarmac excellent points and I can't disagree with any of them. I was just thinking of my wife and how she can handle and shoot my pistol much better than my shotgun. The shotgun is by far, a 100x better of a tool than a pistol, but mine is a 20" barrel with a 14.5" long length of pull that is frankly almost too long for me, let alone my wife. Since I wrote my comment I purchased a weapon light and the Magpul forend with M-lok mounting points, and a nice red dot. I still need to get a shorter Magpul stock to reduce the lop to 12.5". But I will keep my pistol available for my wife as she is more comfortable with that.

@@nickyj3571 I thought about that, but why buy another shotgun that is only good for home defense and nothing else when I already have one better suited for that and hunting.
