Why should YOU buy a single speed mountain bike?
The single speed mountain bike has always held a special place in my heart. Today, it is time that I try and convince everyone else that this is one of the most fun versions of mountain biking you can do. I do all of this atop my brand new Niner Air 9 that has been converted to single speed using a shimano alfine

What single speed steed do you have and what gearing do you typically run?

Redline Monocog - rigid front fork. Gearing varied depending on event and terrain/climbing. Sold it years ago. Being a single speed with no suspension, it really helped improve my skills and conditioning.

I got a trek SS 69er rigid and a voodoo nzumbi with a marzocchi. Usually 32/16

Niner eccentric bb still not available? Thus running your tensioner. I run 32x19 and 34x21 on my 2 SS's around here for a middle ground gear to work on all the trails reasonably. Thou tempted to blaze mountain creek to go 32x18.

Ragley TD:1 usually running 30x15 gearing since most of my local trails are fairly flat.

I ride fixed gear rigid MTB this winter. Never been happier. 30x18, studded tires, Surly Corner bar. That's what I call a perfect winter beater

Me too. I went on a 20-miler yesterday and it beat the life out of me. But, honestly, I loved it and I adore my bike. Growing up, I was always quite poor and couldn't afford a half-decent bike. So. it's nice to have one now. It is also rigid which adds to the rawness of the ride IMHO.

If you want to be SS curious, you can typically use your clutch RD and adjust your limits to have it on your SS cog. I converted my blur with my Shimano XT RD and will see yas Sunday ;)

You forgot this winter riding bonus . . . below 10 degrees I have had the cable freeze in my housing (especially if you have to ride a long way to the trail) making it impossible to shift. So . . . with no derailleur this isn't a problem : )

Good racing with you Sunday! Your gearing selection comments rang home... 34:18 was a wee bit to high (avg cadence was 63 at race 1)

Good comments. I've been riding a Niner single speed for many years now. Curious, doesn't your particular Niner accept the Niner BioCentric adjustable front bracket? If so, toss the Singleator tensioner and just run a chain + front&rear cogs. Simple and more efficient/lighter. You probably have your reasons for the choice.

Single speed rocks. I run a 531 full rigid 80's mountain bike with a 32/16 x26 off road and a 42/16 for road use. 90mm of chain and two quick links and I'm good to go. I might try 32/19 for trail centre riding.

I live in a city surrounded by Olympic mountains, to get to my place even when I go for cruise ride around the town I have to go up the steep, long climb. SS just wouldn't work for my surroundings, unless I want to carry a backpack full of spare cogs and chain rings and tools, or if I'm prepared to walk 80% of time 😁

So I have been riding SS for a while now. On an old Bianchi GUSS 26er. It's been fantastic. However I'm looking for a new SS and it seems hard to find a "pure" one. I would really like to avoid a singulator kit. Does that mean I NEED to find a slotted frame?

You could also use any frame that can accept an eccentric bottom bracket. The frame I'm currently on from niner can but when I ordered my bike they were sold out of the BBs hence why I'm running the singulator. I will def be switching sometime in the future though.

I don’t even ride MTB, but I do ride Singlespeed Best decision I ever made The occasional time I take my geared bike out for a ride with people, or deliberately looking for little ‘street races’ to have with people When I gear up to the hardest gear,52/11, I just leave people behind Riding one medium gear everywhere IMO, makes you a stronger cyclist, And for some of the reasons you mentioned here as well, I personally feel more from the road, maybe it’s the stiffness of the frame, or the geometry of a track bike or something But I know when it’s time to pounce, I can feel every advantage the road has to offer I don’t quite get that from geared bikes Like there’s too much ‘noise’ and I don’t mean sound

That's a efficient way to destroy your knees. To prevent further knees issues, you'll need to stop your favorite hobby. No riding, no weared parts, that's brillant.
Filling my bike frame with foam made it better-kind of. Don’t do it.
