Thanks for the video. My query is regarding stocks and shares ISA investment in simple funds from a simple bank/building society (eg - Natwest, HSBC) platform based on risk levels (eg-, 1 to 5) Vs ISA investment choosing standard platforms like aj bell, ii, etc. Which one is better if you just want to invest in funds please (not individual company stocks). What are your thoughts on ethical investing? Do you think the things you talk about in the video apply here too? Is it possible to invest and avoid things like tobacco, fossil fuels etc and still make decent returns?

Hi Nick. I think simplicity over complexity applies just as well to ethical investing. Comparing the FTSE Global All Cap Choice Index (no vice, fossil fuels, arms manufacturing etc) with the FTSE Global All Cap Index performance is comparable. As of 30th September the ‘Choice Index’ had annual returns of 7.1% over 3 years and 12.6% over 5 years, whereas the traditional All Cap Index had annual returns of 8.0% over 3 years and 12.4% over 5 years. Over the last 5 years there has been no significant difference between the two different investing strategies. It isn’t difficult to find funds that benchmark to ‘ethical’ indices and they often have ‘ESG’ in their title.

When you talk about investment, would you mainly invest into an ISA account? I mean for your monthly investments in your funds.

There are MANY tax wrappers, Pension, ISA, LISA, JISA, JSIPP, VCT, EIS …… The correct combination depends on your individual circumstances and goals. Once you understand the pros and cons of each tax wrapper you can then allocate accordingly. We’ve got other videos and podcasts that outline the pros and cons. Hope that helps?
