I love Skater XL. I started skating when I was 8 years old, and since I have autism, I have motor skill issues. Because of that, the technical movements of skateboarding are nearly impossible. I can't flip my board, and I can't ollie higher than like 3 inches. Skater XL lets me film parts and have my name on a skateboard, like I wanted in real life ever since I was like 12. It's a great feeling.

@@lilfridge5652 it means precise movements (like those needed in skateboarding) are a lot more difficult for him, some have it more severely than others so some can still manage but for others this can make things like skateboarding or even just basic tasks in some cases almost impossible

I grew up skating, stopped after high school but also grew up with tony hawk games and got very good at Skate 3. I am 31 now and still love the culture even though I don’t skate anymore. So playing the game in a realistic way for me is a blast! This game is not for everyone, in between husband and father duties it’s fun to jump on for 30 min and film a line and just fuck around. Casual skate fans will not like this game but I love it so far. Keep it up!

I feel like the issue most of us Skater XL diehards have is the fact that the release feels rushed. I don't know how these release dates work but I feel like this game would've benefited incredibly from them having time to AT LEAST implement the most requested features - Stats menu, board Utils, some sort of fisheye thing kind of like Babboo, multiplayer. I mean it's really hard to defend this game when they say that this is an incredibly realistic skateboarding game but vanilla settings make you feel like you're on the moon. Not only that; the fact that there has been no communication from the dev team surrounding these topics, besides saying multiplayer is being "considered" (No roadmap, them actively ignoring parts of comments talking about the stats menu) is almost insulting. Also I do find it kind of funny that most content creators that got the sneak peek first week were playing on vanilla settings saying "It's not thaaaaat bad" but almost immediately switched to modded as soon as they could. I love the game and I've played it for hundreds of hours (luckily I'm on PC) but I can understand how console players would be mad at paying $40 for a game that is quite frankly devoid of content and has had no further communication from the devs post release.

For me, the only computer I own is a MacBook and I just don't think it would be a good idea for me to run this game through bootcamp.(I may eventually break down and try it out) For now, playing on PS4 is my only option. I love the game and spend plenty of hours on it, but it is lacking. I would never recommend someone spend $40 on the the console version.

I hate it so much because they've shown they're willing to work with modders, specifically the map makers and the dude who made the replay editor. I can't see why they don't take in more people who have this stuff done, and just polish it up for release. So confusing and the lack of a roadmap, as you mentioned, is killing me. Communication is important, especially when you community is so active.

Yes, you can do things semi realistically on vanilla settings but there's a reason why literally every content creator and skater xl "video part maker (lol)" is using the stats mod with the gravity turned way up.

This game lacks the polish and completeness of fully fledged titles, and still feels like a tech demo, but it hits a niche spot for a lot of people that no other game has, even in its current seemingly limited form. I think you do at least need to be a fan of skateboarding, but most of my exposure to skateboarding came from playing tony hawk and skate 3 so I see no reason why you can't come from a game like skate 3 and understand and appreciate what Skater XL is in its own context.

They need to fix challenges for goofy on console. That is my biggest complaint. Literally the only goals of the game arent accessible to half the people who play. Glitches and little bugs are expected with a brand new game but that is pretty unacceptable. Love just cruising around practicing tho shit is so realistic.

The one thing that would this game, and other skateboarding games, to the next level would be to add some “weight” to the bails. The rag doll effects take away from the immersion of a skateboarding sim. Like I want to see myself get wheel bite and slam forwards from a poorly caught hardflip down a set. Or maybe slip out and watch the board go flying. Just my two cents but it really breaks the immersion for me.

As much as I love this game, I cannot justify scoring it highly in it's current state. You have to judge the game by it's vanilla 1.0 release. Mods are what saves this game and puts it very high ranking, but you can't give Easy Day credit for that. I don't need a story mode either. But there's gotta be something to work towards to unlock for engagement. The challenges are bad and don't even apply to Goofy skaters, lots of visual glitches, terrible floaty physics and mediocre animations ( board stops itself from flipping before skaters foot stops it), lacks challenge once you figure out the controls, lacks customization, there's tricks missing you could do in Skate 3 that are absent here like boneless, no comply, late flips, no multiplayer which would have been really boosted this games rating.

I remember when I first did an Ollie in real life, one of my biggest achievements in life, though I stopped doing tricks and started cruising. Now with Skater XL I can somewhat revisit my past with things I was never able to do but I can now in a video game. I was trying to do a line of tricks in the game but I bailed a lot. Though with doing the challenges it gave me some insight on how to do a lot of tricks that I never thought I would be able to do. After practicing for a while, I started to learn what the difference was with BS and FS, grinds, flip tricks, etc. I absolutely love this game, it was a pain at first but now I’m able to skate around and create lines in my head like, “I should try to do a kick flip to a manual then end it out with a Backside 360 Tail grab”. It’s so satisfying landing the tricks you want to do after many attempts.

But the game does need a little more stuff in the console community like maybe a few more maps would be good and multiplayer In the future I would be fine with that tbh. There are also a lot of 'glitches' they can't really prevent when a game is so physics based. But obviously players shouldn't fall through the floor or something silly like that, which sometimes can happen. I don't really got why they went for a 1.0 release now, but I think they felt the level content justified it. I think people have a point when they say the game feels empty. But I also think the game is more like a virtual playground for skateboarding and less of an arcade game. People expecting a Tony Hawk Pro skater experience were gravely misinformed.

Actually, the reason why people hate or started hating the game is because EasyDayStudios sold their game and have gone quiet with little hope for having anything as "complete" as the PC version. The studio has never cared so why not allow the people who made the game, "the modding community", the ability to help us console players out. At least one extra map in these past two months would've sufficed. But nothing.. not even a reply!?!?

I personally think you can only truly enjoy skaterXL if u have a legit interest in skateboarding or skateboard yourself. A casual player wouldn't enjoy it half as much as us. I got this on the ps4 and love it, the satisfaction of landing a trick/line is dope. I do agree fully that they need more content. better customization (the hair for black people is fucking awful haha) and more maps! Im slowly getting bored of the current maps. But overall this game has so much potential. Not sure how it will hold up when skate 4 eventually releases tho.

Kai Taylor please explain how. I played both plenty and thought I would like session more before playing SXL but it literally has less you can do. In SXL you can decide which side to pop out, decide which foot to catch with, have actual control of flipping tricks differently, multiple ways to do the same trick, better 180 mechanics, etc. Session isn’t as far ahead so I don’t fault it, SXL is just currently more fun

as someone who has been skating for nearly 16 years, I absolutely love this game! I can see where the bad reviews are coming from tho. like you said, if you're not really a skater then the game can feel kind of "shit". don't go into it expecting skate 4. but as a skater, trying a line over and over again because you didn't like the kickflip you did or the smith was kind of sketch and then finally landing it perfectly feels amazing. and then spending even more hours filming it to look as realistic as possible is so much fun for me. ( I play with mods btw. but I still enjoy it vanilla as well. )

Playing since Beta I was so confused when 1.0 didn't have official multiplayer and the physics went completely out the window. It seems like SXL is one of those games where the Devs make the base but the community modders make the actual game. If SXL didn't have such a great modding community the game would be absolute ass.

Skater xl is super fun!! I've been enjoying it for many hours and i have been playing on the maps that come with the game. It's a hard game but it feels super satisfying.

I used to hate watching skater xl videos from my favourite skate gaming channels, i only ever liked skate 3, but since getting skater xl and watching more videos of it, ive really gotten into the realism of it, i love giving myself a line to try do and then finally nailing, it is always so satisfying

It’s because these youtubers made the game look so good before console release. But they all use mods to make the game look amazing. Without mods, this game is more Arcady than Skate. And the soundtrack is trash. Definitely not worth $40 on consoles. It’s a $15 game

So far my goals are: 1) ollie / nollie without the board shifting in a pop-shuv it motion cause of the slight angle on the thumb sticks. Hell, even if I dont release the thumb sticks my skater will just randomly jump cause of the slight movement lol And 2) being able to twist my body right before doing a 360 without doing a big spin lol Thumb sticks are sensitive as hell but the game is still enjoyable haha

I put a piece of black tape under my joy sticks to show where the exact middle is and where pulling straight down goes without having that pop shuv from happening. Also good little help is to put a tiny elastic ( like super tiny one kids use to make bracelets or put in their dolls hair) and put them around your joystick right under the grips. It makes it feel soooooo much smoother and gets rid of the clicking noise on your controller. Found it was too limiting to use on a PlayStation controller but Xbox one it works perfectly. It’s made such a difference in the feel of the game and how smooth it plays. Seriously recommend doing this to your controller, it might not be optimal for all games but for this the cushioning feels great with the pop system and not hearing that incessant clicking of the joysticks hitting the rim around its casing makes my soul soooo happy. @night_speeds

I think something simple they can implement would be to be able to name replays because I can't always tell which is which by the thumbnails. I could name one "back nose on table" or something like that.

Skater XL has done so much right. The game play is challenging and engaging. The satisfaction you get from learning a trick or getting your own style down for a trick is amazing. I bought the game because I love skateboarding however I was not sure if I would enjoy the mechanics of it. Doing the challenges really helped speed up my progress in learning how to play, along with watching you tubers opening my eyes to styles I could try. This game is great and has amazing potential.

I quit skating 15 years ago but have been gaming my whole life. When I saw the original trailer for the PC early access launch, I was caught up in the nostalgia and that feeling of skate culture that I haven't been a part of since my teens. I got the early access on day one and have been playing this game on rotation since. Now, I'm pretty caught up with modern skate culture through content like yours and many others on youtube. I'll be buying my first skateboard in over 15 years as soon as money isn't so tight. I want to dial my kickflips in again. That said, I can totally see how this game wouldn't get on with people have no history with skating, so I actually think the IGN review is fair. Thanks for the good stuff!

Nightspeeds u speaking out of my mind. Got it on pc since start and enjoy it playing with mods and community maps, but I also like it to play the vanilla game on ps4 with my friends. Tried to explain the game to my non-skate friends. At the beginning it was hard for them to understand what u have to do but when they kinda understood it they liked it. A good way for the people’s who don’t skate is to try out all the challenge’s from SkaterXL. When u finish all of them and maybe also try it out to get it as clean as possible or with nice style u will see it will make more fun.

Honestly, it really doesn't take much effort to learn how it plays. I've done my first 360 hardflip 180 out literally the first day. The learning curve actually is not nearly as steep as people that gave bad reviews suggest. That's the annoying part, people claim this game is hard, when really the controls are just technical in nature. The only legit criticism against getting Skater XL is how it is pretty lightweight on content in terms of a set of challenges, no story line or 'main campaign', no NPC skaters or pedestrians or moving cars, empty world etc. A lot of the fun is what you get out of it yourself, which is why he says it feels more like a tech demo. It's definitely has enough content to not be a tech demo. But I'd never suggest getting this for console for missing out on all the MODS for sure. On PC it is easily a 8/10 game, maybe 7/10 if you're not into skateboarding as much, but still unlike anything out there (except Session, but that's so unfinished, it's not ready yet).

I actually think the early access price was more accurate for what the game is in 1.0 release. But yeah there are certainly more console games that are not worth full triple A cost lol. So if you are used to that, it might be different.

I love the game as I'm 31 years old and currently unable to skate in real life. I used to skate back in 90s and 00s. now I can get similar satisfaction of landing tricks and lines in the game as I did back then in real life. Knowing skateboarding and how to skateboard is somewhat required to get the most out of this game. If I think about the game without the control scheme, it would leave me cold. But the realism and simulator like nature of it is what makes it great. I see it more like a sim than a "game" basically.

@iRatio spent so many hours on true skate. It takes a long time to get good at but is so satisfying when you can nail runs. Don't forget to turn it onto hard mode or you pop 10 ft in the air!

in terms of content id really like to see them add some map specific "gaps" like in tony hawk where you do something over or on a famous or cool spot and it pops up with recognition that it was a special location. and while i dont think a "story" is important in a skating game.. i do think some kinda career mode where you do certain things to unlock sponsorships and items, clothing etc etc. they could also enhance the character creation a lot.

I'm struggling to learn the switch stance, i get the reasoning behind it, but my head doesn't work quick enough to hold up and flick down for a switch trick when you're facing the same way. Theres a couple of annoying bugs, like the skaters foot gets stuck while pushing, lag in the map, but maybe this is just console. Hopefully they keep updating the game and improving it. I dont have hours to spend learning it for days on end like i used to, so it'll be a slow learning curve for me

What I personally enjoy most about playing Skater XL is doing tricks I'm able to do in real life, or tricks I could see myself doing in the future. For instance, I do a lot of front crooks in the game, which is also my favorite grind trick in real life. Then when I wanna throw in some grabs or 360s, I usually switch to Evan Smith, as those kind of tricks feel much more satisfying skating as him. It's honestly to the point where I even push mongo when riding switch as Tiago Lemos. My point is, which you also said in the video, that having some kind of experience with skateboarding will make it a lot more enjoyable and rewarding, because the game at that point is about a lot more than spinning and flipping your board as much as possible. Because YES, the game lacks in content, but as a skater myself the skateboarding in this game, is enough to keep me hooked.

I don't skateboard irl, im 40. Ive been on a skateboard sure, but I was a mountain bike type of fella growing up. Been playing skate games since skate or die on nes, only because i didn't have a commadore 64 (that had that super old school skate game). I understand a lot of the physics that go into flip tricks etc but was still a bit hard to put into my head like second nature. I got skater xl back in 2018 and when 1.0 dropped, the challenges changed everything for me. Doing all the challenge in all the levels. Was fun to see the most difficult ones were at the courthouse. Doing the challenges are fun. I hope we start seeing custom challenges on custom maps too. Once I got good from doing the challenges, I was doing solid lines all over the place and not bailing as much anymore... very rewarding.

I love the game, I love the practice it takes to master it, and I love the feeling when you finally make a trick the way you want it. I don't skate, I used to try, but never had a place to practice due to living out in the country, but I love watching and studying street skateboarding and this game gives me the opportunity to actually practice skating in a real life scenario with real life physics. However I have mentioned to my friends that this game probably wouldn't be for them bc most gamers these days have to be flooded with game content to stay interested, and the beauty of this game is that you make the content, you have to see the maps as a skater would and the possibilities are endless. I have to say thank you bc without Nightspeeds idk if I would've ever known this game existed

I get their perspective, and look I only skated for 4-5 years (2009-2014), but this game is clearly the closest video games have ever gotten to delivering a true skateboarding simulator. With that said, as a console player with roughly 10-15 hours played so far in then vanilla version, it can get lonely and frankly a little boring. Don't get me wrong, i'll jump on and spend half an hour at a spot trying to land a switch hardflip switch nosegrind. But ultimately, I do think the Easy Days guys need to be more open with what we should expect from our purchase. I spent $70 Australian on this game that, let's be real, was not READY for a full release.

Today I returned after a very long pause. I bought the game at the very beginning of the beta phase 2019. Compared to the old beta community maps (some of them were truly beautiful) the current maps including the official ones can’t keep up. Everything looks out of proportion with lesser details. This is no rant! I love SkaterXL and the potential is immense. I was just wondering what happened? Did they change the engine? Maybe someone here can explain.

the fact that you need to download mods to enjoy a 40$ game is why i cant reccomend this game to anyone, i skate IRL and i can hostly say the spots in the dev made maps are boring, way to much unused space, there no item dropper so you can even DIY spots , alot fo the time i exeperience way to many bugs , my board gets stuck on nothing half the time. If you're expecting the community mods to make your game fun , then thats just lazy.
