Everyone I talk to jumps back a little when I tell them I got a pet snake. Then I show them a picture and they can't believe how CUTE it is and then ask me about dozen more questions. It's almost as if they've only seen hyped up monster versions of snakes in movies. 🙄

Funny, if I show my mum a pic of my Corn snakes, it doesn't really bother her, but I recently showed her a pic of my Royal Python and she went 'ugh, that looks like a proper snake'.....um, a proper snake? Yup, she said 'you know, like you see in the movies'. Movies have a lot to answer for.

It's funny, it took me ages to sort out why snakes and arachnids made me uneasy. I wasn't afraid of them in an illogical manner...I knew they were "more afraid of us" than we were of them, and I also knew that they never went out of their way to bite if given respect. But one day it hit me: I couldn't decipher them the same way I could dogs, other humans, cats...they were almost alien and that made them unpredictable...which made me jumpy, and so on. You hit the nail on the head. Now I am at the point where I see a snake in the woods and I'm more excited to be able to watch it a little bit than anything else.

The creeps is also the sibling of disgust. Where the creeps warn against possible attack, usually from animate life forms or things that look like they might be alive (hence fear of dolls), or situations where one might be wary of being attacks but can't sense an attacker, like when in a dark room, disgust warns against disease and usually applies to specific types of inanimate things, like a pile of goo usually in the green to red colour range, or specific features of animate creatures, like a weeping boil or a bad smell. Terror also falls into this group of emotions as the "danger! Now! Run!" emotion, which has much more of a rocket-boosted kick to it then typical fear. The purpose of emotions is a particular fascination of mine, as well as their evolutionary links to and from each other. Like, the creeps, disgust, and terror all evolved from basic fear, our all purpose "danger!" emotion but with their own specific applications. I'm relatively confident that way back when, fear evolved from the reflexive reaction to pain (or whatever equivalent), that pulling back from the source of harm that lifeforms display when hurt, as a pre-emptive, preventative emotion. And, pain was an inevitable evolution to simply help with the detecting and pulling back from harm. When looked at in that light, our emotions are completely inevitable as survival mechanisms due to the presence of, in this case, predatory bears, hidden dangers, and diseases that can kill you.

Just recently, I meet some new people in an online meet and I told them that I got pet snakes and bring out my BCI. They have many kinds of questions (mostly lean towards negatives) then a question asked "have you ever bitten". I show them my hand with one of my finger hidden from the camera perspective and told them "yeah, I need to amputate my finger" they just stare (kinda surprised). Then I revealed my hidden finger then they even more surprised (in a good way this time) and then I told them that non-venomous snake bite is more harmless than a needle to your hand and the situation feels more light from there and I can feel the more positive way of thinking of snakes from them.

Whenever someone who is afraid of snakes is at my house, I always make a point to hold my snake so they can see how harmless she is. I'll usually offer to let them touch her, describing her as feeling like a soft wallet. Even if they never over come their fear of snakes, I've been able to get people who hated all snakes to at least see that there are "good snakes".

This actually was an added difficulty during the pandemic for some people. With everyone wearing masks, it's gotten a lot more difficult to read someone's expression which for some, myself included, is already difficult to begin with. Not anti mask or anything, their benefits are obvious, but yeah that was a thing. On a side note, for me fear for other living things seems to also work strictly based on rationality and evidence about how dangerous a certain organism is or can be, seems to differ with most humans :p

For younger kids especially those on the spectrum object permanence is difficult and some small children actually thought that people's faces disappeared when they put on a mask so that's a terrifying thought. I also have difficulty judging people's feelings and expressions based on just their eyes as I'm not Neurotypical
@7LemonGwen3 жыл бұрын
@@sarahbeaulieu999 , 4-7 months old in humans is when object permanence is acquired. We couldn't really function without it. If kid's thought our faces were disappearing they'd be tackling us to find out where it went (think taking away their toy). For ppl with auditory processing disorder that use lip reading as a que or actually reading lips to increase their language comprehension masks have taken that aide away. I'd rather ask a stranger, "what" for the 6th time than have covid though (or even just Strep).

@@7LemonGwen not all children on the autism spectrum like I said are not always aware of object permanence as of yet. I am not talking about your average child I am talking about a child like mine with autism. I also have autism and I did not learn object permanence until quite a bit past 4 to 7 months neurotypical minds work differently than people on the spectrum. My mom was born partially deaf so yes the masks do suck for that when I was still working in a group home I also had one of my earrings tore out by our deaf client when he was trying to pull my mask down to see what I was saying.
