The biggest issue I see is loneliness. Actors and Idols are shamed for dating and falling in love, they can lose their jobs. Then you got no friends or people you can trust when famous. Being at the top is very lonely. Yes, Korea has the most viscous haters and until the government puts a stop to it, it will stay out of control. Celebrities need to start suing the shit out of these people. I know some Idol entertainment companies do this and now others must. Haters are mentally ill people who feel they are untouchable, and they need to be held accountable. If you have trouble with people becoming famous or successful to the point you want to lash out, you need to seek therapy, that is not normal or healthy. It's like no one taught them how to get off their own behinds and work for what they want. If you wanted to be a famous Idol and you are at home online complaining it is your fault, you do not have the actual passion for it or drive. So shut up and go do something else.
@arizonagirl64743 сағат бұрын
Exactly right. I've also noticed that idols and actors/actresses can't really defend themselves. They are attacked and just have to deal with it while staying quiet. I can't imagine that. I've always said that the government needs to step in and tell these delusional people that they don't own these celebrities. The culture they have created in Korea is now biting them in the butt. It needs to be addressed.

We're living in a era where social media seems to dictate our mental health. We've become influencers and thus, also influenced. It's a double edge sword. What's happening in S. Korea isn't any different from any other country, just more pronounced and magnified. The obsessions on plastic surgery, wearing designer labels, making lots of money, having a title, being thin...etc. seems to be the main focus. It's such a sad picture.

Yes the social media craze coupled with the insane pecking order we have in Korea unlike the west, where as a celeb you can be forgiven or ignored for many things unless its insanely serious/criminal. But here? NOPE people will harraass and hate on you for the smallest things, turn everything and nothing into a controversy. Go back and try to dig up your past or the past of your family and friends in an attempt to cancel you, have crazy as stalkers aka saseangs constantly bothering you, some may even assault you ( this just happened to a member of the boyz) Then you add on mental health being a joke in Korea and not taken seriously ontop of the already anti social behavior thats "typical" in east asian countries so adding this isolation/lonliness no friends etc then the double whammy of being a celebrtity on top of it. You have less than 5% of this shit to deal with as a celeb in say the usa or another western country. So its no suprise that many of these Korean stars are dying 24/7 yet the same issue is nonexisent in the west. obviously we need some serious change as a society and culturally but unfortunately this shit will take generations to change in Korea and by that time it might be too damn late.

@@TAKIZAWAYAMASHITA first time I’m seeing a Korean admitting the mindset and behaviour of the people need to change. Cos any time I come across these issues, Koreans always give the excuse of “that’s just how it is” and “every country has its bad side” blah blah blah. And my reaction is, can’t you see how this is literally taking away your own citizens? aren’t there social groups and advocates that fight to stop these crazy social behaviours that leads to people unaliving themselves? Korea for sure has to rise up and citizens shouldn’t wait for government to do something. Social change actually starts from the grass roots, tackle the problem amongst yourselves and maybe change will happen even faster. How can your own people be unaliving themselves like chickens and you still havent risen up to fight this horror? Nah, Korea definitely has to also enact laws to handle these crazy antis and advocate for change fast, the survival of the country depends on how active it is to correct these harmful mindsets

To me, and no offence, South Korea is a country with a lot of cultural contradictions. They want to be westernized, but they are so glued and tied to their conservative cultural roots that they are actually suffocating them. They want to mimic the openness of western civilizations, but they are not willing to be open to their ideologies and values. I am not saying either one is right or wrong, but being so indecisive and wavering of their identity is a mental health killer. I don't live in Korea, but I have a Korean neighbor who avoided me like a plague, giving me a disgusted look when she was aware that I was dealing with mental health struggles. They are not willing to be truthful and accepting to and of themselves, and that destroys them.

I think the pressure on actors and idols is beyond belief in Korea. Grown men and women can’t date otherwise it becomes a “scandal” which can affect their job and earnings. Even when they go out there are people watching them and taking photos so everything they eat/drink/ say/ becomes a “scandal” . People come out of the woodwork and accuse them of terrible things, and even if there’s no proof they can lose their jobs. Even when they try to do something good they haters accuse them of terrible things. Like when Jimin from BTS was accused of encouraging gambling because he lent money to someone.

In fact, we were talking about this the high rates of suicide when I dropped her off at school this morning. I'm so sad for these people. I think extreme poverty may make some people more competitive. My dad's family were like this too and he emigrated to the UK from Mauritius in the late 60's and worked really hard for everything he achieved. He would hear his brothers talk bad about him and even rip him off. That must have made him sad as he was a very kind gentle soul and would help anyone out. Now I realise they were just jealous.This is a very low vibrational emotion and when that energy is thought of, it gets sent to you through the ether so you must always protect yourself from energy vampires. TY.

Not quit, they should move out or find work abroad and spend less time in Korea. But I think the biggest issue they have with that is the lack of fluency in English and they’re insecure about that. Because if I was a celeb in Korea, I see nothing that will stop me from leaving that country. If I was an idol, I’d look for how a company abroad will sign me, same way if I was an actor too. Enrolling in classes to learn English is easy, plus one doesn’t have to be fluent in English before they move to the west for opportunities.

Thank you for speaking out about this! One of my newest favorite K-pop group has been severely impacted by haters. The group is RIIZE and because of haters, member Seunghan was placed on an indefinite hiatus for over 10 months. Then once SM announced he would return to active status, the haters lashed out with a vengeance even sending 100's of condolence funeral wreaths to SM demanding his permanent removal. Less than 48 hours later, SM announced that due to the backlash (and against the members and SM's decision that the group should continue with all 7 members), Seunghan would actually be leaving RIIZE and RIIZE would continue as 6 members now. It so sad since this young man didn't do anything criminal, nor anything which hurt or potentially hurt others. Right now, I thank every day that there is no announcement of his departure from this world. I hope that the OT7 boycott against SM becomes successful and he gets a chance to return to the group. Haters just can't be allowed to win, let alone have a big company like SM condone unwarranted hateful and irrational behavior by them and make business decisions based on it. I also know there is a disconnect between my family here in the US (from Korea) and our family in Korea, because of what each values. Materialism is a serious issue in both countries, but it's the level at which people compare and judge each other because of it that is the difference. Really, it's a problem in the Korean community, domestic and abroad, but domestic does seem quite worse.

Those jealous and envious people need to find God and believe in Jesus as their Lord and Savior. Never covet what others have, love your neighbors as yourself, treat others as you want to be treated. Pray and be kind to everyone. Pray for your enemies and those that try to hurt you. I'm not perfect. Life is difficult. But life is also precious and can be beautiful if you look for the beauty. Many people believe in reincarnation and think they have four lives to live. No, you have ONE LIFE, ONE CHANCE, ONE OPPORTUNITY to live correctly. Although we cannot be perfect, we can be kind. I'm so sad he's Song Jae Lim is gone. He was so beautiful and deserved to be alive and happy. I hope South Korean learns to stop hatefull comments and protect their people. I hope they get a suicide phone number for people to call. Song probably needed a hug or a kind word to save him. I'm sad I wasn't able to help him but in his honor I will try to be even kinder and watchful of other's pain in case I can be of help. If anyone reading this is having a difficult time, please 🙏 make it to tomorrow. Always, make it to tomorrow. Reach out to as many people as you have to without shame. Ask for help. Tell people how you feel and what thoughts you are having. Remember that thoughts can be good or bad. Feelings and thoughts are not the same. Try to separate your feelings from your thoughts and try to make a rational decision and understand that even if you think no one cares--we do. You matter and you are needed in this world. The pain you feel may ve the same pain another is feeling. You can use your pain and your experiences to help others and kindness heals. In your most difficult time, show kindness and don't give up. Don't leave. We need you here. Otherwise, the world will be too dark. Be the light in this world.

May his soul rest in peace. It's so sad that such things happen. I've read that such suicides often do happen because of people being harrassed by haters (and that also in this case it could have been like this). I think that how actors, singers or other celebrities are treated in the SK much differs from how it is in many other countries. Even if everywhere there are some gossip portals or magazines, which some do read just for fun, no one is obsessed with private lives of these people so much to pay much attention to it, not so much to hunt someone down with hate, to dictate them how they should live. We separate someone as an actor or singer from their private lives. And everyone has the right to do with their lives what they want - unless they commit crimes or other really harmful acts, for which they are sentenced and punished legally, not just by haters. It's hard to imagine that for instance a bunch of some Internet trolls or haters may destroy someone's life just like that, and that it's not so rare, and that no one really tries to do sth about it. It wouldn't be possible however if the rest of the society would oppose to such hate and truly condemn it. We don't really have such things as celebrities being dictated so much how they should live their private life or for instance having to announce publicly that they intend to officially meet or live with someone, we don't have something like "going public with a relationship" (that I've read that celebrities in SK do), we don't idolize celebrities like it probably is in SK. And for sure everyone deserves to have appropriate, effectively enforced, protection against harrassment in Internet, protection of privacy, of private data, of reputation and good name and against defamation.

"Friends and Family wish you well, just not better than them" - a very common reflection of asian societies. I have a feeling this is caused from inequality?
@jongmul1965Күн бұрын
Good afternoonnn!! Yeah! It´s very sad! But actually Reaching this point often stems from numerous social pressures, especially for Korean idols. Constant pressures-financial demands, the strict control of managers dictating what they can and cannot do-alienate idols from reality and their surroundings. These relentless expectations distance them from genuine relationships, leading to depression. For Korean society, suicide has thus become a more critical issue than any other illness.

I have so much respect for 이승기 . He must have had a really hard time when everyone seemed to have an opinion about his in-laws and on top of that he was being gaslighted and abused for most of his career by people he trusted. You have to be very strong to go for the love of your life and keep going in life. Could have gone differently with him.

It's more likely that this poor actor was a victim of sexual assault and abuse. This equals chronic mental torturing. On the outside everything looks fine, but mentally it's a vulcano. The entertainment industry is an unhealthy toxic environment full of predators of all kinds. For instance Harvey Weinstein in the US who's now in prison. Johnny Kitagawa in Japan, who was a founder of talent agency for boy bands who 'allegedly' assaulted and abused several hundred teenagers for decades. It wouldn't surprise me if the Korean authorities will do everything in their power to silence the unfortunate suicide. Don't stick with rumors. Who started it? A crazy fan is just a scapegoat. The entertainment industry is worth billions. A sex scandal would ruin many things. Take care. (sen/15-11-2024/Belgium/Europe).

And for the actors and idols, it’s the whole system in the industry that makes them become victims. The Korean entertianment industry is so controlling that they give fans the power to dictate to the stars how to act inorder to fulfil the fantasies of the fans. It’s like the stars are forced to cape for the fans continuous love and support so they have to act how the fans want or else….. Give these celebs autonomy and change the system. Let them date and live normal lives and take away the power to dictate from the fans. If they can’t support an idol or actor until they feel like they have to project their fantasies onto them then they should stop being fans. Artists&Actors will never lack supporters for their work and the fans don’t have to have control over them for them to succeed.

Stems from a very competitive environment, where people are just aiming to win over others. This is in all developed cities I guess.

It is sad the frequency of these acts. The citizens and the government should do something to prevent this and yes celebrities and money bring a lot of opportunities but also a lot of opportunistic people.

You said there are some people who don't want to see other people become successful? Well, that's what we call "crab mentality" in the Philippines. We have a bunch of people like that here, too. They will do anything to pull you down so they can go up. Just like crabs right?

I think the REAL reason isn't people borrowing money or being envious. Even with the "famous phrases", that's not a valid reason for a person to take their own lives. None of these celebrities took their own lives out of jealousy. The problem is the excessive bullying of Korean "fans", the boundary violations and sense of entitlement they have to the celebrities lives both publicly and privately. Parasocial relationships that are forced by the entertainment agencies lead the general public to misinterpreting their place in the celebrities lives. It's not even haters, "fans" of celebrities expect them to live lives beyond reproach based on the "fans" expectations rather than letting them be human beings with human flaws

The culture of hate, insecurity, jealousy and materialism has to stop in South Korea. The government should regulate and hold accountable those who bully the celebrities to the point that they will self exit. Its so toxic. Rest in peace Song Jae-rim

Thank You For explaining and revealing why the Korean society is in so much pressure. So much pressure that even having children has become a problem. I think when one's life becomes too much about the self always comparing one's self to others. Always needing to be more than others. Too materialistic and too worldly even your own success is not enough. The pressure to keep and elevate one self becomes unending. Criticisms from people becomes unbearable. Money and Fame does not bring joy in life. One becomes isolated and lonely. These celebrities are too alone despite being surrounded by people. They are not able to trust people. This also happens in Japan. Very sad Lord have mercy on us.

It's so sad , its as if the fans become so fixed on these movie , music stars they they believe that they can tell the actor what they can or can't do . The fans become overwhelming and make the actors lives a living hell😢. It seems to be an Asian / Korean/ Chinese problem, where they want to be westernised but the strict rules from their own culture overpowers everything .

I feel like there is too much pressure put on kpop and kdrama. They get to the point where they dont have any privacy, any life outside of work, any off days. They seem to go from enjoyment of their work to dreading work. Once you take someones passion and make it miserable its no longer going to be their best work. Then you add stalkers, bullies, social media, society and family pressure, jealousy. I wouldnt want that for anyone. It truely is hearbreaking. Bless his soul❤ qnd all the other young souls that have been lost.😢
