Have you bought a new camera recently? What did you buy and what was the reason behind it?

Sold all my other gear and switched to Nikon and don’t regret it. 4 people in my wildife and car photographer meet ups switched as well.

As an aging hobbyist the “PF” lens has enabled me to extend my passion for nature/wildlife outings. My tripod is not along for the ride anymore (yes for landscape & astrophotography of course). I was a d500/d850/500mm PF shooter from the time of their respective releases - loved the setup! Sold the d850(my niece loves it!) to purchase a Z8 - primarily for the AF system. The AF is so good, I have more time to spend with composition & animal behavior at the moment. I am adapting all my F mount lens with no issues, although I am planning out an “attack” strategy on a couple Z lens. Yes something happened @ Nikon few years ago - almost seems like a different company. Their willingness to update the Z bodies with regular firmware updates is a real bonus!

D810, D500, Z9 with 500 mm f/5.6 PF. Find myself too close and unable to frame some larger wildlife appropriately, so may be either using 200 mm end of 70-200 mm f/2.8 with change from FX to DX or 1.4 TC. Haven’t purchased any Z glass yet but planning for the future.

As a (very) long Pentax user I recently switched to Nikon and bought the Z8! This camera is - with a wide margin - the absolutely best camera I have ever owned and used! I complemented this camera with the Nikkor 24-120mm S, the Nikkor 100-400mm S and the Viltrox 16mm. All these three lenses offer an absolutely superb optical and build quality and the results I get out of them are far beyond what I ever thought to be possible 😱! For sure the Z8 has a steep learning curve but - at least for me - that's the fun in using this camera and learning/trying all the new features 😊! As a "spoiled" Pentax-user I did not want to compromise on the haptic , the build quality and the weather sealing (on both - camera and lenses) so the switch from Pentax to the Nikon Z-system was my "natural choice" - and the absolutely right one😉!

It's great to see someone here in NZ reviewing gear in our conditions - tiny birds in the rugged bush. I made the painless swap from f-mount to the Z8 last year and the only problem I have with it is my daughter pinching it for her event videography and photography!

Awesome video dude and thank you. Great to see a fellow Kiwi carving it up on YT. I'd hate to think of what you paid for all of that gear in NZ, I live in Perth and that stuff is expensive enough here, I know back home it's even worse. You are a very brave man lauding Fuji. I stubbornly stuck to them over a decade, hoping for things to improve (FX system). My paid customers were suffering and so was my business. I actually now despise Fuji (after 12 different bodies and fifteen of their lenses). Eighteen months ago, I spent nearly 12K, and swapped over to two Z6ii bodies and 6 of their wonderful Z lenses. The difference was night and day. Even my clients noticed a difference and now rave about the quality of my images. Even the much maligned AFC of the Z6ii's are fine if you know your stuff and have your setting correct. I photograph all of the big public events here in Perth and they always involve people moving, dancing, flipping or whatever, and to me the AF is just fine. You are correct on the gorgeous 24-70 2.8 s lens - that is my go to and bread and butter lens. I look forward to some more lovely videos.

Good choice. The Z8 (not to mention Z9) is a winner. I haven't changed, however. Nikon shooter for over 4 decades.

Well said about using what works best for you. Like tools sometimes a combination of more than one is needed. I have been using the D850 and 500 PF for e few years now and it is easily the best system I have ever owned and my results with have shown that. But I am also using a Tamron 90mm f2.5 macro which I purchased in 1989 ($300.00) for one particular purpose for my business and it is still the sharpest lens I have ever owned and I have used many pro lenses. I will most likely upgrade to the Z8 and a 180-600mm in the near future but I'm not rushing to do so.

I know this video is a few months old, but curious to hear your thoughts on Fuji's new XF500mm f/5.6. Seems like a decent aperture for equivalent 700+mm focal length.

Most people griping that Fuji is not good for wildlife- they don’t know how to set the custom autofocus settings… is this their error? In part, yes, in part - no … Fuji might do better in making some better defaults for autofocus than they provide today, and say - maybe when you switch to bird autofocus- the custom mode switches along with it - so, having the option of coupling recognition mode with autofocus preset mode

I changed from H2S to Z8 as well lol. Autofocus on Z8 gave me too many issues and ruined my experience. I am still waiting for lens to come in for Z8

I also hardly see or hear of folks changing entire systems when it comes to expensive new gear...But I don't live in New Zealand...best of luck...retired to Bangkok. P.s. the Sony 200-600/5.6-6.3 is good enough for.me...cheers.

I have Nikon and PF lens are great but I have to say Canon does a better job at tracking it’s so why so many birders uses them. I’m not switching because of the PF lens but I am getting Canon as well.

I don't think that many people are shifting to Nikon Z at all, from what ive heard and seen It seems like nikon is having a hard time shaking the reputation of having Bad AF from the original Z cameras, The Z8/Z9 fixed that but those are pretty expensive and have a limited market. I feel like if you dont photograph wildlife/sports the Z5/Z6/Z7 are easily the best value cameras available but for some reason don't sell that well.. does seems like the ZF is selling well though and maybe the soon to be announced Z6iii will attract some more users..
