An artist that is so overlooked by alot of people is Oscar Martin. He drew Tom and Jerry since 1986, drew stories for The Lion King and Woody Woodpecker too and is still drawing his own comic series SOLO today. You think with the portfolio he has under his belt he would be famous on social media... No he has only around 2000 followers and an avg of 100 likes

except for his portfolio is all he needs when he needs a new job. his follower count doesn't matter. social media artists mostly have value in social media, but the pros like this guy have more value in their respective fields. if you have two people - a jelly art style 18 year old girl with 500k followers and an old fart who worked with Disney, Pixar, and all other mini branches they may have with only 300 followers, who would you hire? sure the 18 year old has a lot of followers, but that's not going to get her a livable career, just a few dollars here and there from monetization and commissions (but with the lack of experience, she might be losing money from those instead of making). the old fart will be making an actual salary. this is why social media doesn't matter when it comes to art. your ART matters when it comes to art.

However, most art galleries are completely overrun with applicants and in-person networking is hard for illustration artists. That's where social media kicks in. It's an easy way to network with other like-minded artists. "Social media growth" takes it a step further and treats your art like business. You pay for ads, follow algorithm trends, and create a variety of content based on a calendar across multiple apps. The problem is that life is fickle, at most resulting a fan-base that'll buy whatever you produce for a couple years, but the grind that it took to get there is never worth it. Instead, people should just create regardless of what anyone thinks.

People forget how important interacting and networking is. You can’t just post and call it a day. Post on multiple platforms that all link to each other, follow a lot of accounts, share things that inspire you, comment and interact with other creators (even if they don’t respond!!) share other creators to your story. Even if you don’t pop off instantly if you stick to improving yourself and posting it will eventually happen. Sometimes all it takes is 1 popular person to share you :)

I'm sorry, but this advice is just as troubling as the one criticised in this video. Many people can't open art accounts on MULTIPLE platforms and engage with others in EVERY SINGLE ONE OF THEM, because it takes so much of their time, time that most artist use to actually, you know... do their art, and also focus on other important stuff in their personal life. I agree with a commenter above: your advice is like office politics. Artists shouldn't be obligated to have half of their life hyperfocused on engaging with every single other artist on every other platform just for fear that their engagement will drop a mile just because they missed commenting on ONE artist's work that day. So thank you, but no thank you.

Ok so maybe you get big online cause you draw pretty anime girls? What’s that for if it’s not what you like? All so you can eventually draw what you want and have all those people unfollow lol. There’s plenty of successful artists making REALLY weird things and maybe they grow slowly but the people who stick around are way more dedicated and the artist will be able to thrive longer. Unfortunately, if you want growth you need to play the game of economics as these two things are very much intertwined. You need: 1. something to offer to the people 2. a lot of knowledge of the "market" you want to participate in 3. a ton of luck Many people underestimate the latter in particular. Even those who have success don't always acknowledge it having had such a huge impact (i.e. survivorship bias). For all these great artists with a ton of skill and a lot of followers there are so many equally skilled artists who never managed to get their fair share. Being at the right place at the right time really can make the difference; especially in a market that's as competitive as art.

luck really isn't a factor when it comes to social media if you understand the algorithms and what kind of content gets engagement. It only seems like luck when you don't know what you're doing and you by chance post something that people like without understanding why.

@@chickenmadness1732 Luck is a heavy factor, you might not call it luck, divine providence or karma if you're religious, but it's all the same. Some people get to succeed where others fail, often the one that succeeds isn't even the one that understood things the best. Luck is THE deciding factor, from your ability to even practice art, your living situation allowing you to even pursue it in the first place, to whether or not your comment gets seen by people. If you have 100 applicants apply for a single position, only 1 gets the job, no matter how hard the other 99 applicants worked. In most cases 90 of them won't even get looked at, they'll have their applications discarded as a suitable candidate is pulled from the top 10 applications in the stack, so even if you are statistically the best person for the job, you got skipped because of something outside of your control. No amount of understanding the algorithm will solve the problem that the algorithm might choose a cat video over your "perfectly understood" post.

I see so many artists complain about how meme arts get more traction than fully rendered art (understandable and hella relatable for sure) but also please be honest with yourselves, which one are you more likely to retweet- a photorealistic art of a frog, or a funny lil forg? Equating your art’s value with how many likes it gets is such a slippery slope and i hope especially newer artists dont fall for it

You can't imagine how much you motivate me to keep doing art and figuring out ways to make it fun and less serious, it's so overwhelming sometimes to hear big artists say you have to draw 6 hours a day every day and not pay attention to your "inspiration and wants", you just MUST draw a lot to to get good and somehow not get a crazy burnout the first month. I talked to artists who are in a constant state of burnout for years and push themselves to draw because they need money to survive, it's so sad to hear and so demoralizing as well, you don't want to get there, sounds like 0 fun and pure suffering. Hey, just thought I would chime in and give you more artists who go "Practice is importaint, but your health is more importaint." Drawfee, it's a chennel of 4 artist friends, and they teach drawing classes once a month on their patron streams (Which the vod becomes free a month later) and most of their advice is followed by saying don't worry too much, just do your best and try to have fun with it. one of the artist even had a "How to practice" class and his tip was basically "Pick as many days in the week as you want, it can be 1, 3, 7, doesn't matter, and try to draw for 5 mins on those days, if after 5 mins you still aren't feeling up to it, stop, go do something else, you don't need to push yourself." and all of them have backgrounds consistally burning themselves out, but they learned that they didn't have to do that (One of them is still learning, the others 'bully' her into taking breaks, and activitly cheer her on when she takes a break without being told to, she gets a timd "That's better I guess" when she takes a break from her main work, but still spends 16+ hours a day working on a passion project, because, she likes doing it, but she keeps giving herself wrist injuries because she works too much.)... Sorry about the ramble, they are my comfort youtubers, and I tend to get over excited.

I'd say the biggest issue is finding what that "value" or "appeal" is. I tend to hop all over the place with my art: different topics, techniques and I tend to have a super bad posting schedule and my engagement is abysmall, so I really don't know if there's any "appeal" online in my works. That's just something I thought of watching this video. When you're really small on social media, it really feels like you're just throwing your works into a bottomless pit. Not that I'm planning on not posting (or fixing my schedule for that matter), just that I think the "appeal" is more visible in hindsight, when you actually get big or big-ish.

6:50 honestly, sometimes the fundamentals aren't really a factor. It really just does come down to A. the social media platforms are kinda shit nowadays and B. certain niches aren't as popular as others. Thanks for this video! I find it very useful. I post a lot of fanart, because it’s what I love to draw, and sometimes it’s scary to go beyond that, or to mix it all. I keep doing it becasue I TRULLY love what I do, but sharing online lately feels like screaming to a void. It used to be fun, now feels like and obligation. I used to have a "business" selling my art (I didn't have the proper paper work to call it as such, but I don't know what else to call it). I would follow all of the tips that experts told me to market my art and it didn't work, so I was miserable. Looking back, I see now that even I wouldn't wanna follow me. I was boring. But ever since I've stopped trying to sell myself and just posted whatever I want, I've been getting more attention. I post silly memes, comics, with an occasional rendered piece. It hasn't translated into money, as of yet. But I am having a lot more fun. So, I agree with you about it needing it to appeal to other people, but don't forget it should appeal to you, as well. I've not got a lot of followers on my socials, at some point I just wanted to be seen. I've just given up at this point and decided to have fun with my self and my art. I post like every week, month, every dang blue moon. Hell sometimes I'll go a year without posting. I'm just slipping what I sketch and draw at this point onto my account with no care. It's really helped me just floating along and not worrying about the numbers. I'm just now getting myself where I want to be on understanding what I wanted my art to be like. I will say one thing that's helped me is following the advice that tells you to study what you want to draw, that and try to help your memory. It's like studying for a class - if you want to learn math? Your gonna do the equations so you know how to do the equations. It's the same for art.

This was very good advice. As an artist you have to sell yourself and your art. Why should anyone care what you’re showing them. I’m trying to grow on here with my cartoons and it’s been hard figuring out how to go about it my own way without copying everyone who’s already made it because why would anyone want to see another theodd1sout or Jaiden? But the algorithm needs to be fed so it makes being an artist on here a lot harder specially if you work full time. We should want to be growing as artists and let the money or fame follow after. O I'm early yay edit after actually watching the video: I like to think that, if you can get your art to somewhere you personally like, self-expression wise and fundamental wise, then more people will like it as opposed to following all these complicated tips to "grow". best place to post art is pintrest low key, you post it there and let it cook the algorithm won't fuck you over if you repost and it doesn't need to be recent to enter the algorithm posts from months ago will slowly exponentially build up and pop off

TBH this is 100% correct, especially how one shot wonder posts aren't great, memes and humor can kinda make up for drawing skill(my case lol) but are still part of value, and that tips and tricks are just multipliers.

I understand what you are saying, and I agree, but these tips can be useful. They're marketing tools to help people starting out their accounts, ofc your main focus should always be the quality of your art, having fun and improving your skills, but if you already have some of that and still no one sees your stuff, these things do help to get that snowball rolling. I'm saying this as an artist and marketing graduate ahah, I've seen amazing professional artist with like 100 followers because no one can find them online. Sometimes you just don't have the luck or support base to start out and that's when you should give these a try to increase your chances of being seen!

Out of all the standard "how to grow on social media as an artist" tipps, the worst one was "have a consistent style and only ever do one thing". I wanna try and do way too many things instead of restricting myself to only one. Like maybe I'm gonna become somewhat consistent once I find that thing I vibe with the most, but even then it wont mean I won't post the occasional blender render or illustrator poster. It's just straight up an awful tipp, actually preventing artistic growth.

(Well I cared at first, then I realized I shouldn't be caring.) I'm drawing for myself and not for others. I don't do that. If people want to see my art, I send them a private link to view all my artworks. It takes forever for people to like your page, so I thought, 'I don't care.' If people want to see my portfolio, I let them use a private link; that's also an option, and your work won't get stolen or traced by other artists.

This might possibly be the best "how to get big" videos ever, cause you succulent explain that you need a solid niche, but consistency is..... not quite as important. lol In fact, I think i proved this to myself because i stopped posting on a different account for like a year and then came back with a banger song + video which did really well....... then i posted a couple more songs that weren't as good and did not nearly as well. Actually, you basically could be summed up as saying "quality, not quantity"

I’ve noticed that some of the most art that blowing up a few one of the following three 1) they get overwhelmed and disappear. 2) they become a art reel farm( if you check their page you’ll almost never find a picture of their drawing it’s just transition reel after reel 💀) 3) they actually just Genshin Artist or a fandom Artist that’s has a stable community and are very involved.

The fundamentals really are important... I'm not quite there yet and creating a new piece is so tiresome because drawing a character rough take so much effort and corrections. I won't start a social media account until I can clear a self-imposed bar for consistency.

I know how you feel, thinking your art isn't good enough to share yet or your rate of output isn't high enough. However I would encourage you to *start sharing now anyway* and post at your own pace. The thing is you're always gonna be growing and improving if you keep drawing consistently. So you might as well start now so you'd have a good baseline to grow off of when you do feel your art has improved. Yes it will feel uncomfortable and you might not see instant gratification for a while. But that's all the more reason to start sooner and get past that phase. I'm telling you this because I did the same thing and really regret not posting sooner and ignoring my friends telling me the same advice. I feel even my art would be a little better had I not waited. Now I'm seeing others IMRL doing the same thing and they either give up early or never even start. So don't end up like that.
