Thank you for giving us this info . So what should we do if we have a long gap or any of the red flags ? Is all our medical education going to go to waste ? Is it over for those of us with all these red flags ? Should we just give up our medical careers ? This is very disheartening!!

Certainly not, do not give up please. I think addressing red flags should be an individualized venture depending on what your specific red flags you have . For gap years, you can’t change the past, but you can do other things to strengthen your application like research publications etc. Also if you have a good explanation for those gap years and what you did during that time, some programs will be akin to move past that. How many different specialties you can apply to, can you apply to more than 1 just to get into something.

I applied to just one but you are allowed to apply to as many specialties as you can afford. Rule of thumb is, you should have LOR in the specialties you apply and a separate personal statement to upload during the application process.

Although some IMGs do match into surgery, here are some of the important factors that affect this process; the competitiveness of the specialty, Strong LOR from US clinical faculty. High Step exam scores, US clinical experience (Not just observerships) and the reputation of the international medical school.

Lokraj, sounds like you’re referring to observerships prior to entering residency. I will tell you those are not the best as far as residency applications, however, I suppose it’s better than not having any US clinical experience at all

Hey! Your step scores and your US Clinical experience are Huge factors that influence your residency application and a successful match. Just having good grades alone is not an automatic game changer. The goal is tho strengthen every area of your application profile. All the best

I’m afraid not. Residency is required for all specialties in medicine.
