Humans behaving exactly the same as animals, insects and bacteria blobs. I've mostly retired from listening to their 24/7 BS. They're SO up themselves they don't realise people have had enough. The concept doesn't occur to them. They DO think people want to listen to more lies from them. I've heard every lied you could image and I'm DONE with listening to people. Am into restoring/refurbishing vintage speakers (mainly Wharfedales) and all of them, once brought back to original factory specs., will walk all over this rubbish. The most recent ones I, restored are Dovedale 3's, Denton's, Melton's, Linton W30D's. All competent performers and very efficient so they don't need big amplifiers to drive them. I think, starting in the 1980's, speakers started to become so inefficient that if you didn't have 50 watts+, even these monitor style speakers would just not perform.

I totally agree with the comments below ⬇️, I am a Bang and Olufsen fanatic pretty much with their kit in every room and Tv 📺 too . 2 complete systems which are now out of production and the newer multi room stuff . This channel like Andrew Robinsons channel gives a very balanced view on HIFI and is based upon what is substantial knowledge of Calvin and his fair minded analysis which is not based on dislike through ignorance for a particular product. Bang and Olufsen is very good kit in anyones book ok it’s not generally up there with Wilson audio etc however the Beolabs 90 , 50 and 28 would give most systems a run for their money . B n O is built to last it looks and sounds great and thanks to this channel fir giving my preferred manufacturer a fair hearing like the recovering audiophile does across the pond 👍👍🇺🇸🇬🇧

Some 10 years ago i picked up a pair diy 3 way speakers with Philips drivers. Closed tweeter and mid range drivers plus a 8" woofer. X over was a messy diy project as well. They sounded dull even after i replaced the caps. After years of gathering dust I took them apart and mounted all drivers and X over in a 40 x 80 cm piece of plywood, open baffle style. Not 100% open baffle as both tweeter and mid were closed drivers. I hooked them up with a Akai AA 1020 and they blew me away. Great open sound and detailed bass. I use them for nearly a year now and they please me a lot. Those drivers were prisoners in that cabinet so it seems.

Here's my solution to the varying idiosyncracies of different speakers. I run a Pioneer VSX D711 amp to which is connected 4 sets of speakers on A+B outputs. There is Yamaha 2.1 column type, B&W bookshelf type, Wharfdale 6" midsize, and some unknown compact mini 2ways.. what one speaker doesn't deliver, one of the others does. The result is a lovely full range expansive sound, enhanced by running the amp with Loudness on. In another room I have a Quad 33/405 running Kef Concertos which doesn't sound as good as this multi-speaker set up

I've owned speakers designed by Rodin Marshall and heard a few more. In the smaller designs, such as Audiomaster MLS1 and MLS2 he went the sealed box route in search of a tightness in the sound. I think there were a lot of very boomy boxes about at the time, Wharfedale being typical, and he seemed to be going out of his way to make something more accurate. To me they sounded stifled, in much the same way as these 252s. When he went up in scale, for example, in the Audiomaster MLS4 and Monitor Audio R352, he had a bigger box and a port and it seems the sound has room to "breathe". Certainly the dynamics are in a different class. He probably did actually think about the designs just as much, but his priorities in the smaller designs, where more budget compromises had to be made, left them lacking. Very useful video, Kelvin, thanks.

I really liked this video. It doesn't seem petty or like complaining for the sake of being negative. It's just a great explanation of why some speakers - especially low cost or small ones just don't have what it takes to be really pleasing. I could do my own similar video with some things around my house that fall short for yet another reason - they're old and the low end tech just wasn't up to what we've grown to expect these days. I doubt anyone was ever really excited about these.

Not exactly cheap (around £350 to £400) but an extremely good value are the Dali Ikon6 (mk1) who are at least 10-14years old by now on the used market. They are efficient (91.5db/W/m) , so they match very well with my sansui au101 which has only 2x18W. These do everything pretty good but excell in the airiness of higher frequencies. The dome+ribbon tweeter delivers something magical. Laid-back character (gotta like it, which I do). Female vocals and Gregorian chant are a delight with these speakers, but also Pink Floyd's "Dark Side of the Moon" is a totally new experience. Previous experience: 4-way Philips 22AH468 (forward, kind of bright and not enough bass for me). IMF TLS80 (magnificent and very low bass and all around very good, but lacks the delightful extreme airiness from the Dali Ikon6). Magnat msp200 were ok overall but there's no magic (can't quite put a finger on it, it seems they only become nice on a high volume), the KEF103.2 is absolutely fine for classic music but no good for serious bass and seem quite hard to drive. Brand new Chinese clone of the LS3/5a: I have no comparison with the originals, but I love them for the near field and I consider them the ultimate computer speakers. Finally the Dali606, I have had these for 20years and they are quite good and very efficient and made me decide that the Dali Ikon6 would be a perfect match for my fantastic sounding but low-powered au101. And it was indeed spot -on. I still have a lot of trying and swapping around to do, as I have several excellent vintage Sansui amplifiers, a new 2x40W valve amplifier with a lovely sound which is currently hooked up to the IMF TLS80 (an unexpected match) and a new 2x110W Kinki ExM1 with impressive specs and very clean sound....but I prefer the sound of the lowly sansui au101 (fully re-capped mind you).

The big brother of Monitor Audio 252 - 352 with open port, I find it very enjoyable paired with a good valve amp. Easy to follow guitar bass, low bass is pleasant and surprisingly delivers under 50 Hz. Highs are lovely, not ultimate level of details but I can listen all day long. I wonder if you ever had the chance to listen to those. In my eyes another bargain, as they share good combination of kef drivers with vifa/seas even if they are a bit later - mid 80'.

I buy sell and refurb speakers so I have owned all these models. I agree about the Mission MX1: Boring, Mission's budget offerings from the 80s and 90s had more going for them. The MA R252 is a good buy if you want a decent size speaker with real wood finish. The simple crossover is a hallmark of Robin Marshall's designs but to really work well you need a highly engineered mid/bass driver like that used in the Epos ES14. The dark horse is the Rogers LS2a (mine were LS2s with the Vifa/SEAS polydome tweeter). Nothing special with the standard crossover, but re-capped or bypassed with modern polypropylene film caps, they are SENSATIONAL. I used them as my small room demo speakers for a while until a regular customer of mine prised them out of my hands. I A/Bed them against LS3/5as, and I have to say I preferred the LS2 (only after recap). Capacitors are the best upgrade you can do.

unfortunately a huge problem of many speakers is a sad fact that the parts used on the inside are not always that good, that goes for some expensive ones as well, which is why i always pick em up used.I do my best to do some sort of modification which is not always easy but not impossiable. id like to pass on if one is so inclined-to unscrew the woffer remove most if not all of the white foam crap on the inside of your speakers. It really opens up the midrange.I did just that on my boston Acoustic bookshelfs cs 2s an it sounds much better preety cool cosidering costs under $100.20.00 new . a pair no you cant get them in the uk or us any more for that matter. Its worth bearing in mind that the majority of speakers from canada an the us generally have deeper bass than ones from the uk or europe.

Firstly, thanks stereo review x for going to the trouble of making the videos - they are really enjoyable! Like you, I have been dipping my toe into analytical hifi for 40 years. Initially, it was necessary to buy magazines for information on 'the best' products and you ended up with very conservative systems - and there was paranoia when you did not entirely agree with the reviews. Maybe you bought second hand - and you just took a huge punt... Frequently buying somebody's slightly jaundiced piece of ki and spending weeks trying to decide - is it me - or is there something wrong with this stuff? KZbin is great - but, clearly, we can't really hear the setups that people upload - so we have word of mouth - but at least way more bandwidth... I admit, there was a point where I completely gave up on hifi- as it was becoming an expensive obsession - and I really had to buy some furniture for my home and buy food. I think audiophiles come in a cocktail of guises... If you are a person who wants to buy something to impress others - good luck if that is where you derive your enjoyment from... If the music is secondary to the equipment - and you are listening to the output of equipment to be critical - again, best of luck and I hope you get a lot of enjoyment from your choice of direction. If you are a musical purist - you like particular genres - it is all about the music - plainly, also good for you. Maybe... many of us are a combination of the last two? And this can frequently lead us to start listening to genres of music - and then loving them, courtesy of our experimenting... So - the idea that you are going to achieve reality in your living room, in that it sounds like the artiste/s is/are in front of you... Maybe this is more feasible with certain musical genres? And, let's face it, you can go to disappointing concerts... So reality is multi-faceted. I suspect... that everything we listen to with regard to equipment is 'coloured' - and we actively like a particular colour. The stereo review x look at a tube amplifier may support this? The immediate difference between tubes and solid-state is really alluring to many of us - and maybe especially if we do not really want to hear the 'heavier' end of the music spectrum. So, there is no definitive 'best' you like a colour and you listen to a particular genre - or genres, of music - and the combination of equipment serves that genre in the right colour for you. I tend to work on the premise 'rubbish in - rubbish out'. Therefore, feel that unless the recording is good it must be an uphill struggle to make it truly enjoyable listening. In the past, I have felt that the more esoteric the hifi I owned, the worse a bad recording sounded on it... There are bad hifis - but no best hifis. The perpetual law of diminishing returns means the hunt is, sadly, inexhaustible, and be cautious because it can be insanely expensive. So somewhere in there is the right hifi for you - and when you find it, I suggest you try to live with it and enjoy it - and not indulge in the 'if only I had/did... as there can only be dissatisfaction. ' However, if the chase is what you enjoy, again, good luck and enjoy it!

What's your opion on Mission 700 leading edge speakers from the 1980s? Got a pair for £50 seem to be fine just need the speaker covers redoing on the edges. Got a black ash pair so look like retro modern style and look even better on stands. Sound wise mids are outstanding, highs not totally clean but they aren't one of the more expensive missions and bass seems fine. Seem to excel with live music. I put them on a Panasonic ux100 from argos because the original speakers are just trash. Original speakers were 4ohm the leading edge are 8 ohm. Will I be damaging the leading edge speakers on it? The hifi itself provided punchy bass rather than rumbling bass but seems to have above average mids which is another reason for finding some better speakers. The full system is rated at 350 watts which sounds a bit ambitious, not too much power for the missions? I'm no audiophile as you can probably tell but I do enjoy listening to music and the punchy bass is a refreshing change at such a low price point. The hifi is still available today in argos if you need to look at the specs. Can you think of any speakers I can get for similar money that are better or have I got a bargain?

I have just had mine sorted out, new caps etc and they are great for double bass etc but not so great for compressed rock music. Dub is also amazing, floor shaking and you can feel it in your chest.

Yes, it is interesting how different models of speaker from the same manufacturer can have such different characteristics. Like you pointed out with the Rogers LS2A vs LS3/5A I have found with Mission speakers. I have a pair of Mission 770s which I would describe as "Lively, punchy and detailled" - quite unlike your review of some different Missions here. By the way, what amp/amps did you use for trying these speakers out ?

Those MIssions are perfectly fine, I have a pair ad they sound pretty good with a 40W amp in a room not particularly large and well positioned As I already said, for whatever the reason, most likely an excess of gear to listen to, the reviewer is completely lost.

Well not sure what Wharfedale is you mean but if it’s Melton Linton I would definitely say no Glendale possibly if it has the blue Tweeter tweeter with the grey cloth over it is totally awful Well not sure what Wharfedale is you mean but if it’s Melton Linton I would definitely say no Glendale possibly if it has the blue Tweeter tweeter with the grey cloth over it is totally awful. I've seen these Sony SS G4D speakers going 2nd hand occasionally and they look like a really promising design (3 Way, Large 10 bass woofer, Dome midrange, soft dome tweeter, bass reflex front ported, heavy 20kg each) Have you ever had any experience with them? I've love to know your thoughts on them!?

I don’t know them in detail but the Japanese very rarely worked hard on their speaker designs mostly they made it look impressive you know at least with a lot of drivers you are going to get a big sound but I’m going to doubt it’s serious hi-fi let’s say that

@@stereoreviewx Thanks very much for the reply, really appreciated. I think the Wharfedale LINTON Heritage Speakers could be an interesting listen. They are a new speaker but have the old design aesthetics of a classic circa 1975 three way speaker and pedestrian looks. Yet, using some more modern materials, with the all important (IMO) soft fabric dome tweeter. I think it would make an interesting video to see if they have managed to capture the sound as well as the looks in your opinion. Thanks again, your passion for hifi is infectious! :-)

those Sonys don't have a dome midrange, just a 3" cone midrange with a large dust cap. 1KHz crossover point from the 10" to the 3"...

I've had 3x sets of LS3/5A through my hifi-shop - they were designed for "near field" desktop monitoring primarily for the BBC and other broadcast studio-- now they are collector value only - and £900 is prestige pricing driven by collectors market...Any one buying for hifi in the home is going to be real disappointed. They're not recommended as a hifi speaker. They don't have the large wavefront., which provides extended dynamics for the "far field".

Re the missions. I had a big chat with a manager at richer sounds many years back. Julian richer bought up most British brands like mission and then rebadged a load of crap from China. He has a scam going with the owner of what hifi. They bring out some missions, usually the first production batch has ok crossovers and drivers then after 2 or 3 months they swap for cheaper crappy drivers. The owner of what hifi gives them a 5 star review for a big cut of the profit. Fun fact Julian Richer bought the owner of What hifi a Ferrari. Very sad what happened to our great British hifi brands and that these guys have been scamming the public for decades now.

When you said that some reviewers don’t give you all the facts . It’s simple why NO more free stuff if you start telling the truth IE: the bad and the good points about products it’s all about the free swag when people review NEW products and it can and does stain the reviews

Regarding the Monitor Audio speaker, sure you can add better crossover components, add cross bracing and internal damping panels because I have done just that. It's now really quite a nice sounding speaker. However, it's no longer a budget speaker. Budget speaker are ALWAYS a compromise, they have to be simply because they are built to a price, hence budget speakers. Regarding the Rogers and the Mission, I agree they really are crap, nothing you can do with either. As you quite rightly said, the Rogers is not to be confused with the LS35A. Chalk and cheese!!

I honestly wonder how some speakers get a 5 stars review. I still remember my first setup. I had a pair of Tannoy 621 SEs and a Marantz PM66se. The amp was ok actually but the speakers which received 5 stars from a well known publication. No idea why because they weren't very good. No treble and no bass and the midrange was dull as dish water too. I think that much of what you read and hear by some reviews is more marketing than the truth. There is a lot of money in HiFi and the business model it to try and convince you that the latest component is now much better than what you currently have. They bring out a new model which is basically the same as the old one. Kef just did it recently with the LS50 (which are genuinely really good btw). There is now the LS50 Meta. I listened to Kef's description of it on their website. I laughed out loud because there is no way that a little plastic maze behind the speaker changes much. But Kef is selling it like some sort of revolution. I am sure there a people out there now selling their LS50s to buy the ls50 Metas..

Polypropylene cones must be the worst "wet-dream" of audio industry back in the 1980's. I owned a rather expensive Polk Audio columns back them and in perspective they were junk in terms of sound, but "high-tech" at the time. The lighter the cone the better, while polypropylene cones were heavy. Those Polks could not do good bass nor midrange.
