What I really like about cardboard cutouts is that their scare factor is twofold. First is how you react to them in the early game, when you didn't expect anything, and then get spooked by the first appearance. Then you probably laugh or groan, and soon get used to them. But afterwards, in the later game, when you actually met real monsters, you become so tense, so on edge, that those innocent stumps and jellies start scaring you again. To the point where I saw some streamers yell, then rage at the stupid stump that scared them.

About specimen 10, I personally found it terrying but for not the usual reason. I found the cat-dos entry of the worm/eel thing before I found the one about the actual specimen 10, and since it of course said it's a worm like thing and that it is completely harmless. When I eventually did find his lair I was of course very tense, but when the worm came out the vent I felt relief funnily enough. I thought "Oh, I know this thing! It's harmless, the game is trying to scare me." But then it stops and the actual visceral thing comes out, completely destroying the relief I had found a second ago. So while it is not by favorite specimen, It gave me one of the most original scares I've ever had.

Fun fact! Originally the note that has the *inserts obscure horror reference that no one gets and misinterprets as instructions somehow* was actually about avoiding picking up other notes to prevent summoning the "tall man", a reference to the Slenderman game. However, players took this as a hint that a specimen would attack you if you picked up the notes, so they had to change it.
@thevenator3955 Жыл бұрын
So wait the instructions said “if you pick up notes something will attack you” and the devs *didn’t* expect players to therefore not pick up notes? I mean obviously it’s a slenderman reference (I find it pretty doubtful that slenderman was an “obscure reference no one got”, wasn’t that game hugely popular, like one of the first “viral” horror games of the internet?), but I would just assume that means this game added an enemy inspired by that one, not that the reference meant nothing at all.

@@thevenator3955 Haven't really played the game, but I doubt the note was a straight up "Avoid picking up other notes or the tall man will attack you." Heyo other dev here, loved the video so much! Def wanna point out some funny / interesting things. -I've never heard the "Fog Maze" reference to Lost Woods from Ocarina of Time as "Simon Says", interesting. -In studio, we call Spec 3 our "stupid dog" It's based off Resident Evil -Spec 4, I still need to fix the flashlight ;__; She's based off games like Corpse Party and the movie Ju-on. -Spec 5 also has a funny lil Star Wars reference in there. -You talking about people interpreting things incorrect must be infuriating: It can be sometimes where people don't realize the "walking sim" part of it is giving you a false sense of security like you said at the beginning of the game. We purposely leave some things ambiguous though because we believe the human mind on its own can make things a lot more scary than we could. -Spec 6 is the one majority of people die to and consistently. He's had a lot of changes, initially he was like a Weeping Angel and didn't move at all when you looked at him, but then we saw people cheesing that mechanic to heal. So we changed it to it's current iteration which is that when he laughs, that's his indication that he's dropping down, you move slightly forward and turn around when you hear the laugh to avoid getting hit, then you turn around again and keep moving forward until you hear the laugh again. If you stare at him, he'll just get mad and zoop back up and fall back down and hit you again. We've tried balancing him but speeding him up isn't the most wise as we've seen countless players have so many issues since it's the first spec that changes the whole, just run forward gimmick. -Spec 7: We wanna give it a Death Scene but we don't wanna rush it or force an idea. We wanna make something we will think fits the spec the best. It's also based off NES Godzilla / Gygas from Earthbound. We're also trying to figure out recahse ideas for Endless Mode. -Spec 11 is odd because he's from an OG Akuma Kira Little Big Planet map. -Chase themes all have a 50% chance to play so that you never know when and if you're being chased unless you find out the hard way. -Spec 12: Akuma Kira and I were obsessed with Too Many Cooks, an Adult Swim short, so the design of the old man is based on that. -Spec 13 is currently in a revamp state, half of it is currently live, with her chase, her area and slightly her design. All the specs are getting updates to their 3D models to have more detail, better animations, etc -Eagerly waiting for the Dollhouse DLC video and see what you think and how you interpret it! Yeah, I found PakPak's Chad vs Virgin meme comparison very absurd considering one of the standards given was that Specimen 8 "only kills violent people" and Specimen 11/Food Demon "kills a lot of people to compensate for low self-confidence." It might be because of the visual medium (also PakPak is making a joke) but I would be more afraid of the specimen WITHOUT discernment for its victims. At least, that's how I would measure "Chadness" of an inexplicable horror. Also, depending on one's belief systems, having your soul wiped from existence by Beef Demon could be leagues scarier than being trapped inside the rib cage of a furry god. The thing with Specimen 7, and this was pointed out to me before, is that it’s so slow, realistically the only way to die to it is to either be stupid or give up entirely. Something I noticed is that all the specimens (besides 1) seem to have gone through or witnessed some sort of tragedy. Gel's note makes him sound like he's in constant pain. Subject 5 is trapped in the facility and constantly hungry. The archetype Ringu's based off of is a woman who's been brutalized and comes back for revenge. Bab's a little mysterious but any theory about her usually points back to her being a punishment for the cult. Ben's puppets were thrown in the river and he subsequently drowned. Wall of Flesh is the physical manifestation of the protagonist's mental health. I never played Lost in Vivo but my guess is that Deer Lord is a protector for deer against humans. The host for Parasite has been forced to give up their free will entirely. Food Demon is a physical manifestation of working in food service, probably. A massacre occurred in the Mansion and the Old Man was possessed by it. The Siren is, "An ancient water dwelling creature believed to be a lost soul who died tragically during the Deluge," according to CAT-DOS. And finally, Taker is a survivor from Unit 731 who was flayed alive. Along with the entire Dollhouse and Karamari Hospital lore, the entire mansion's built off of tragedy. And every death screen has this undertone of giving into suffering or giving into mob mentality, instead of fighting for yourself. By fighting through the mansion, you fought through a bleak world and by escaping during the ending of Dollhouse, it's like you fought to find something to live for, in a way. Or maybe I'm looking way too much into the funny cardboard game.

Regarding Specimen 3's disproportionately cool kill sequence: Akuma Kira has said in interviews that the quality of the game's content is mostly dependent on how far into development he made it rather than any active decision to make some parts more stand-out than others. To put into perspective, Specimen 3 was one of the first things added to the game while its kill sequence was one of the most recent, only being added to the game shortly before the release of the Doll House DLC.

As far as I remember it didn't have the patrolling pattern you described. Also, having played Amnesia thus having a direct point of comparison, it felt like a poor imitation of the water monster from it. The Amnesia one forced you to stay in water by forcing you to interact with things away from the safety of high ground to progress which the siren lacked.

I though that this could be cooler than what we got and would make the deer gods and food demons death screen different from each other.
