It depends on your risk per trade, if you trade small lots a stop loss is not necessary because a huge swing in the opposite direction will not kill your account. If you trade large lots then you need one cause you can get wiped out.

Stops are to reduce risk if you are already taking too much risk. So yes you need it if you are going for get rich schemes and big money. Stops essentially guarantee a loss if your entry turn bad..However, If you reduce how much you are putting at risk and scale in instead your initial purchase can be wrong and you still dont lose money. Just scale in correctly with a system...Also stop open market trading, margining your account, taking overvalued stock and buying for breakouts etc etc. .

You can use a 2% stop loss on a single positon or average out with two 1% positions against those lovely "hunt" moves that happen all the time. You will have a big loss eventually but it's easier to overcome (emotionally).

I think that no stop loss strategy applies to stocks that have a habit of whipsawing like BMW, L'Oreal, Adidas. If you look at those stocks they just whipsaw in one day like 5 ATR upwards. In just 1 day.

Hi. I am very new to forex and just have some demo accounts. In my demo accounts I have never used stop loss and except 1 account with 3 thousands dollar others are all in profit. I just have an idea while watching your video. Assume that I open a long position on EUR/USD and margin is $50 and the total equity is $1000. I decide in for a stop loss level on a feasible level but DIDN'T TRIGGER it. I mean it is my stop loss level but I DID NOT GIVE ORDER for it. Well, here the question is that Should we open a short position a few pips under that decided level so that if it declines even under that level we can start getting profit while the long position is losing? Also, for a chance of reincrease we enter a stop loss level for the short position on a feasible level that supports upward trend again. I'm a newbee and I haven't implemented such a thing for now and I don't know the end consequences of such a strategy. I think that if the decrease last long and long position is losing profit the short position will continue getting profit and it will equalize the profit and loss and the account will not blow out if am not wrong. Here I don't know those. 1. Will be any extra margin will be used for the short position again? 2. Will be profit from short position added to equity so that there won't be a margin call? 3. It is not guaranteed that the short position will be triggered while decreasing is fast. There can't be a fluctuation on the level of short position and it cannot be triggered even the decrease is lasting. Again, I'm just a 2 weeks forex trader and I haven't tried such a thing yet. I just thought this while watching the video.

As I started the video I was thinking about things I was going to add as I don't use a stop loss, but you nailed it. To further stress what was said, smaller position sizes do wonders. Another great example is maybe you didnt get the entry just right, but are right on the call, a smaller position size will allow you to add another position to help you exit the trade break even or in profit. I rarely lose money on bad entries because of this, BUT it's important to be able to see the difference in a bad entry or a bad call or losses can definitely pile up. Glad I stumbled onto your channel!

A stop loss will not work for you on 9/10 (short-term) strategies. After years of tinkering Iv'e found the most effective stop is a hard equity stop. i.e. if your trades in total hit a negative equity level of XX% , close all trades. You can set the level to what you feel comfortable with, I personally use 20%. I know to the £100 (on a £10k account) how much I'm going to loose if my combined trades turn against me. I have 20% in reserve to top up and carry on. 100% agree on the small trades Nick. Greed will always, ALWAYS kill your account no matter how smart you think you are.

Also, how about putting in what I call a 'catastrophic' SL? One where if you are watching your trade, you can put in a 100 PIP SL which is not often hit but that 100 PIP SL would comprise...say, 15% of your account and base your lot size on that so you guard yourself against a huge institutional move but you avoid the 25, 40 PIP SL that gets hunted so often. It sort of gives your trade room to move and you can always exit the trade based on price action, etc. So the worst case scenario is you lose 15% of your account but you have executed a risk management trade.

frankly speaking, using daily charts for taking your position and exiting is more reliable. In my cases most of the stop losses are hit due to setting them on lower time frames. It's a good strategy by your dad holding position for 20 days. At least he wont get trapped in whipsaws. Very informative video !!

Trader Nick...What on earth are you talking about? Anytime you close a trade for a loss you've used a stop loss. You need to have an idea of when you want to take a loss and move on. If your stop is too tight mental or otherwise you will close your trade too early. This whole video you criticize stop losses and then you go on to list all the different ways that you and your Dad implement "dynamic" stop losses. Semantics.

I am no where as experience as some of the traders out there but personally I never use stop loss, but then I never open a contract/trade which is more than 5% of my account. Trading is relative, if you have $10,000 account, don't expect to make $1000 in day, you will be lucky if you made $200. My losses sometimes run into thousands but the reason I have no stop loss is I can afford to lose $2000 in a day because I have $80,000 in my bank account. Trading is not get rich quick scheme. It's 25% skill, 25% luck and 50% how much money you have in your bank. PS: If you have a small account, please always use stop losses to manage your risk otherwise you account will be wiped out and you will have no money left to trade

I’ve been learning to trade for about a year, finally staying green consistently. I’ve lost count the amount of times I’ve been stopped out(usually by just a few pips) and then it went in my direction, but not using a stop is a bit scary lol. Seeing as I sit and watch my trades anyways I may try smaller trades with mental stops. I started adapting by manually closing for small wins or losses if I see something that makes me think I’m wrong, then if it continues in my direction I enter again but still have a stop loss if it moves quick. Doing it that way has worked great for me, on my practice accounts I’ve made 5-10% in just a few days each time with a lot of smaller wins and just a few losses.

I wonder WHY traders or trader wannabes use moronic leverage on $100 accounts because they want to get rich quick! Trading isnt a get rich quick scheme. It should be treated as another income stream. With strategies that have an edge coupled with sensible position sizing and risk management, stops will not be run over that frequently. My advice is never get into a trade without stop loss unless you want to babysit the trade or use a percentage of your account balance as stops. BTW, been trading successfully for 13yrs. Nice video Nick.

No brokers offer guaranteed stop loss orders. A stop loss order is an order to buy or sell. If there is no liquidity where you've set your stop, you get filled at the next available price. Which, could be miles away in some instances! That's not the broker, that's just how markets work.

Great video. I've been using bracket orders with a profit and stop loss preset. Statistically, half of my winning trades are winners bc I move my stop loss further out as price approaches it. I have a very solid entry strategy and am starting to enter trades with no target or stop loss. My success rate has gone through the roof! I manage risk with position size and am willing to lose 100% of the money that I put in that trade. I don't fear down swings.

@yassinetalbi5884

Yes in theory, but if you're in negative , it could take forever for the price to come back to break-even or profit because you were in the wrong direction. On the other hand, you're account will probably be eaten out by fees and swaps (important to mention).

I don’t use stop losses, I only trade the FTSE 100, my observations watching the FTSE for several years, is that it is cyclical, and there is usually a trading range, If I take out a buy or sell position, for example £1.00 per point, I make sure I have enough capital for 1000 points, as I already know that it may go in the red by 100 or 200 points, before going back in the green, I am prepared to hold for several weeks.

I have seen and you too can see the spead open 20 or more pips and hit your stops....the time to see this is zero time MT4 time ....scalpers need to use stops ...but 4h and daily chart trading .. you will do better without stops ... but you must .. look at the down side ....How much draw down can you take .. and say the draw down was a few weeks...lot sizing too big ...maybe..

The whole point about stop losses is to be patient enough to pick better entries. Like at 02:38 why are you buying on that red candle? If you waited to buy that bull hammer candle with the same stop, you'd have a winning trade.

I came to look for videos because i am thinking that stop loss is a freaking way to get you. Is like the market is after your stop loss and then when it hits it goes back to reverse. Thank god I found people that are doing good without stop loss.

Is there an authority to whom report companies who breach data protection and they somehow got my phone number, my email without me giving it to them, also they harrassed me by phone, by email several times after I expressed no interest in them on the phone. This company is the UFX company. I put them in spam, blocked their phone number. I have seen others complaining about them.

Nick, like you, I have done both - used and not used stop loss. Lately, I have been having the problem where the stop loss is not "triggered." I lost everything I gained from yesterday because the stop loss did not trigger (wasn't at my desk). I didn't trade today as I was upset. I needed a head adjustment. Tomorrow I'm getting back in the game, but will not be using the stop loss. This means I will need to be more hands-on which is something I wanted to not do.

I develop trading algorythm that use mean reversion. And I noticed that it effectively increase the winning rates. But the major downside of not adding stop loss is that you sometimes have position that stay open for tens if not hundreds hours (despite using a 15 minutes timeframe). Because as the position is not stopped it get too far in the unexpected direction . You have the choice, either to wait very long time for the price to reverse and hit take profit (or never...) or cut the loss and lose big. And when you get 1 one loss, it cancel all the previous profit. :(

hope you can answer my question..I dont trade on Margin im a mid to long term xrp holder but I plan to sell my Xrp at $4.00 price point on Coinbase pro. Should I set a limit price of $4.00 or do I need to be concerned with stop limit which is im assuming is more suitable for day trading .btw My average price is .35 cent for 1 Xrp....i know those leverage traders on Bitmex got screwed...is there any risk in my limit sell? I want to execute automaticslly at the right time obviously..should i be concerned. What do u recommend?

Your stop order is an order to the market. The broker simply passed that order to the market, and you get filled at the next available price. For every buyer there is a seller

If you've done your homework properly, you shouldn't need to use stops, your trade need a wide berth to play out, so it's more a case of recognising how many pips a trade retraces before going in your favour rather than it going against you because your entry is totally wrong. Stops are deliberately hunted and I've lost nearly every trade using them versus not using them and nearly winning all my trades. More emphasis should be put of risk size and margin.

@@harrykrish9977 Boris wants a no deal. aka total disaster. the GBP will take a beating if he wins. expecting it to go back to 1.20 USD and fast. that is over 1000 pip hit. On the other hand. If Tony wins then the UK will have a better chance of making a deal that makes sense. Not saying it will be perfect....he has to honor the referendum and leave or have another one and honor the result. but basically a Tony win will be looked at as a big positive and the GBP will probably go up 200 or so pips fairly quickly. either way the trader wins here. IF your broker lets you trade on election night you are dealing with and ECN broker... not a market maker. we are all going to find out if our broker is worth keeping. i don't do business with market maker brokers... at all.

Can someone answer this. Ok let’s say I do a stop loss only after I profit let’s say 20% and then put a stop loss at 8% below that but then do a market buy limit at 5-10% below that just to get a lower buy point again discount. And hope it bounces off there. Is that a good strategy. ?
