It's always in solitude that enlightenment comes... Muhammad received the Quran in a cave, Jesus conquered the devil in the desert, Buddha under the Bodhi Tree.

Green Trent ??? Mohammed was a liar but he was definitely a real figure. The buddha also definitely existed, he was wrong, but not lying, he believed himself to be right.

Why do they have to bring the 4th century BC into this? Why can't they say. "it makes me more passionate in my commitments". Or something like that. Instead it's like, I study this because....monks were celebate and.....um....lots of people did it. It was totally common. IN THE 4TH CENTURY.
@whatabouttheearth6 жыл бұрын
Hotpocket Moutaindew because the title is "why STUDY asceticism", so their emphasizing studying, so therefore the history of asceticism. and not all people back then were ascetics, ascetics have almost always been people in a special practice that werent the majority.

We need to remember as Christians that we can deny ourselves food, comfort, or any other things. But we have to stay in a place of prayer and openness to what the Holy Ghost has to say or we're no different than Hindu or Buddhist monks who starve and live lives of extreme poverty and deprevation
@zachariah71146 жыл бұрын
Completely agree Paul, and it was mentioned a couple times in this video that early Christian ascetics devoted many hours to prayer and worship. I think you are ultimately right, we have to let the Holy Spirit guide us. And let us remember that while self-denial can be an amazing tool of spiritual growth, "it is by grace you have been saved through faith, and this not from yourselves; it is the gift of God, not by works, so that no one can boast." (Ephesians 2:8-9) I think healthy and proper practices of self-denial should then follow our salvation, not precede it.

"Asceticism is not necessary. A soul grows by the exercise of human virtues and the observance of human morals and by divine favour. The extreme asceticism of the saints was superstition. The monasticism of the Christian church was mistaken. St. Paul was responsible for much of this because in one of his epistles he praises those who do not marry..." ~ Baha'i Thought

Withdrawal from the physical accentuates the spiritual, not a physical withdrawal but loss of its importance. Physical is radically addictive, distractive, the flesh resists the spiritual

Self denial does not bring us closer to God! If we have to struggle with self denial, we have not been transformed or reborn as scripture says. Once we are born again, we lose our desire to indulge in sin. We need no law to forbid us from indulging in destructive behaviors. Our new nature becomes altruistic, rather than the worldly nature of seeking to satisfy the flesh and the ego.
@JewelRNelson3 жыл бұрын
I don’t believe we lose our desire to sin, that’s why we must deny our flesh daily. The flesh is constantly influencing us. Self denial is imperative when looking to be like Christ. As we deny our flesh and allow ourselves to be led by the Holy Spirit, we are empowered to choose the things of the Spirit. I do agree, self denial doesn’t bring us closer to God, alone it would be just works. I do believe the closer one get to God, self denial would be a result.

there's no self, it's an illusion , You don't exist let's presumably say that u were switched with another baby when u first came to this life right and the new family who took u in under their wing gave u a name and their last name and u grow and have kids and die without knowing it, now this's a proof of the no-self theory i came up with u'd never know who you would've become and you're dead there's no u, u r who u think u r and u r nothing, nothing affects me not time not people not place not even my ( self) that's made based on what happens during its stay people experiences encounters all illusion that's made by the mind, I'm an empty energy flowing infinitely all other things God life universe all put in a transparent bag and zipped up i see it from afar lol it's nothing My ultimate philosophy is there's no self we're like a sponge without an identity, absorbs everything and releases it continuously permanently infinitely that goes on with no essence, an unidentified entity meaningless non-existent, nameless and unknown sleep well after this lol
