I wish this video had a bit more "nuts and bolts" data, such as oil capacity difference, what the difference in depth, etc. I have a 2010 Forester with an EJ253, and I'm looking for more oil capacity and a pan that doesn't hang down as much (impact risk). Also, I would think the two baffles in the older style pan would more effectively reduce oil slosh during hard cornering and such, and give the oil more time for bubbles to work out as it returns to the pan. It is true that the old pan doesn't have clearance for the newer equal length exhaust (I suspect this was Subaru's biggest reason for narrowing the pan bottom). However, I ditched my equal length exhaust because it wrapped fairly tightly around the oil filter and made replacing it a royal pain. On a side note, I love the "Subaru sound" I gained in the process. My Forester is not that far above stock, so I really did not notice any performance or mileage losses after going from EL to UEL. On a higher performance engine, an EL exhaust may make a tangible difference.

I have a jdm ej205. I’m in the process of doing this exact swap. Just found out I cannot use the factory oil pickup. The brace for the oil pickup hits the new baffle and obstructs it from bolting up. Might go with the killer bee, not sure yet.

@chriscullen25862 жыл бұрын
Would an alternative temporary solution for someone ready to go to the track be just filling the oil about a quart higher than the dipstick wants, or would that cause oil pressure issues and/or cause the crank to possibly dip into the case oil?

I'm replacing the EJ25 in my 2003 Outback with a JDM EJ20. The EJ20 has the new oil pan on it and the EJ25 has the older style pan. Do I need to install the old style pan on the EJ20? I know that part of the difference is related to the exhaust routing new vs. old.

Could one potentially heat up, and bang a flat bottom in?

Lol. I think the spacing on the inside is fairly critical to get right, and since a new OEM pan is only about $90, I wouldn’t want to risk damaging the engine to offset that cost. But good question buddy! 👍

Amazon, eBay, or Subaru dealer for the OEM parts. Killer B or IAG for the pickup. Cheers!

Loving your informative videos Luke. I have a couple of questions now though. You said if one uppgrades the old style flat pan to the newer 07 style you need to swap to the tube and dipstick for that pan, but what about the Killer B one? is that designed to go with the same tube and stick as the 07 revisioned pan or does it use some custom tube and stick? Also are the pickup itself the same across all EJ motors and if there is any differences what are they? I would definitively want to go the extra step for the Killer B setup myself for that little bit extra peace of mind when going for a spirited drive with a built engine, but that new style pan is definitively a worthy uppgrade for most of the old subies. Hopefully I will get to heavily uppgrade my EDM SF5 turbo forester one day. and your channel will be one of my go to for when Im doing any maintainance, repairs or uppgrades. Great video cheers!
@BFE08STI5 жыл бұрын
The pickup is different. The newer style pan is deeper and has the pickup screen located in another location than the flat bottom pan. Google some images of the pickups and you can see the differences
@SubaruONLY5 жыл бұрын
Yes agree 100%. Pickup is different dimension (ie pickup location) for new style pan. Killer B setup is the way to go if you can afford it for sure! Yes, the Killer B Pan goes with the tube and dipstick from the new style. Cheers and thanks!! 🤙🤙
