But you've got a lot better chance of survival if your surface ship is sunk vs. if your submarine is. Not to mention the potential for getting stuck or damaged without even receiving enemy fire. Read some of the horror stories of people who have survived sub disasters or were just forced to stay submerged for days at a time, I'll take a bullet over the torture of that.

For trying to show how it is accurately done, they sure do say "fire" a lot. The proper term is "shoot", due to "fire" being a casualty term.
@onlytoughonline31598 жыл бұрын
This is incorrect. The term is, in fact, "fire". It is only used in two situations, a casualty and during a weapons launch.
@bohunt95968 жыл бұрын
On my boat (SSN-709), fire was reserved for casualties. Shoot was term used to launch upon the enemy.

Ok, but if you served under my former commanders, you would use "shoot" lol.
@JackpineGandy7 жыл бұрын
when I was in, 50 years ago, the doctrine was "fire" was an actual command to launch the torpedo. (or fire the gun) All preparatory language was "prepare to shoot" etc, so as not to cause a mistake, even though all commands had to be repeated, in a tense situation shit happens. "Fire" was also a casualty. Ditto for surface ships in the US at the time. Respectfully submitted.

@pop5678eye6 жыл бұрын
Mind you, this was WWII technology and tactics. Modern torpedo targeting and guidance are far more accurate, but so is anti-submarine warfare. In modern submarine tactics a single shot, while in theory can be done within a few minutes, may more likely take hours to prepare (patience is not just a virtue when you don't want to be seen, it is a life-or-death necessity, and you have to maneuver slowly to guarantee both the hit and your survival) and an engagement may even take days in outmaneuvering your opponent.
